ARCHIVED Any Gardening Tips For A Beginner?
MaryJones2 replied to purple's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Laurie, thanks for all of your excellent advice on the potatoes. We've been gardening for years and finally decided to try the square foot method in raised beds. We too have a rather large garden (1/2 or so) and it's just way too much to keep clean (i.e. weed free). We start everything from seeds: peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers, corn, cucumbers, squash... -
ARCHIVED Dd Left Out Of Snack Time During Passover
MaryJones2 replied to RBPhill's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
They certainly could've handled the situation better. My guess is that the cranberries are Kosher but most likely not "Kosher for Passover" which is a different label. Generally most food approved for Passover has to come from the Passover section of the grocery and is only available a few weeks before so they should've let you know that you needed to supply... -
I too love All-Clad. I have lots of pots and pans and they are always the ones I reach for first. I use a small cast iron pan for eggs. Once you get the patina it makes the perfect omelet IMHO! I prefer plain stainless steel. You can run them through the dishwasher and they never wear. Some of the special coatings don't fair well in the dishwasher...

I am pretty hard on pots, pans and utensils so I have all stainless steel and cast iron. They last forever and are very easy to sterilize.

ARCHIVED Dd Left Out Of Snack Time During Passover
MaryJones2 replied to RBPhill's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wonder if they didn't give her the cranberries or other stuff from her stash because none of it was Kosher for Passover? -
ARCHIVED Now Eating Less As Gluten Free
MaryJones2 replied to anonymical7's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My consumption went down too. I think it was because I wasn't eating empty carbs and junk anymore. My body was actually getting the nutrients that it needed. -

Check out Organicville. They are all gluten-free and made in a dedicated facility. I don't know if they have the flavors you are looking for though... -

Me too. I have none of the outward symptoms of PCOS but my ovaries look like a minefield. -
ARCHIVED Trying To Concieve/irregular/celiac Disease Clomid?
MaryJones2 replied to still.joyful's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
PCOS is insulin resistance and not everyone has the symptoms typically associated with it. Ask your doctor about Metformin. It's an old diabetes drug and it's used to treat PCOS. Treating the PCOS will regulate periods and ovulation. For Prenatals - I like Open Original Shared Link. Best of luck! -

ARCHIVED +biopsy/-labwork
MaryJones2 replied to rma94's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'd trust the biopsy over the bloodwork. There are quite a few reasons bloodwork can be negative. Just my opinion, but if your condition improved on the gluten-free diet and you have a positive biopsy then I'd assume it was celiac until proven otherwise. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Couple Of Questions, Lol More Like A Few Maybe
MaryJones2 replied to LandonL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When you say foods that have corn as an ingredient do you mean cornstarch, corn oil and such or do you also mean corn chips, etc.? I'm the opposite. I can eat fresh corn but generally avoid processed foods with any respectable amount of corn in them as they tend not to agree with me. -

ARCHIVED How Do You Know When You Get Glutened?
MaryJones2 replied to loxleynew's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It took a couple of years for me to completely heal and keeping a journal helped quite a bit. Sometimes I don't quite realize that I've been glutened until about the 3rd day when I go wow I've felt like complete dirt for the past 3 days and then I go back and look and can pinpoint when it happened and what it was. -
ARCHIVED I'm On The gluten-free Diet, But Am I Missing Something..
MaryJones2 replied to LoisArbuckle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think you'll feel better if you are more diligent about what you eat when you eat out. Just because something should be gluten-free doesn't mean it is and you wouldn't know without quizzing thoroughly. You know how it goes. The chips could be fried in the same fryer as the flour tortillas, etc. Even meat and veggies are suspect because they could be cooked... -
ARCHIVED Foxwoods (mgm) In Ct Experience
MaryJones2 replied to Lombardi25's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's awesome that you had a great time. I'd email the executive chef and let him know that your experience at the cafe was less than thrilling. Hopefully they will use your comments to train their staff better. -
ARCHIVED Yams Vs. Sweet Potatoes
MaryJones2 replied to LittleMissPatient's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is a fun read: Open Original Shared Link Sweet potatoes are in a different family than white potatoes so it's not surprising that you can eat one and not the other. -
ARCHIVED Good Gluten Free Bagels Or English Muffins...
MaryJones2 replied to mindiloo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
All of the gluten-free english muffins and bagels have about the same amount of fat and calories. Joan's english muffins have fewer calories than Foods by George. Joan's does have 1.5 grams more fat but when you're in the 3.5-5g range I personally don't consider it much. -
ARCHIVED Blackstrap Molasses
MaryJones2 replied to foodiegurl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I love molasses! I use it quite a bit when cooking any time a recipe calls for sugar. It makes great caramelized onions. I also add it to pasta sauces. I generally use regular sugar when baking but might add a tsp or two for flavor. My mother and aunt take a teaspoon every day for iron but I never really got around to doing that. -

ARCHIVED Sunscreen And Bug Spray
MaryJones2 replied to mcarbone's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I use Banana Boat Sport. I think Burt's Bees and California Baby are also gluten-free. For bugs I use Avon Skin So Soft Regular Oil or Jungle Juice from REI but Jungle Juice is like 95% deet so might not be an option for kids. Skin So Soft also makes a sunscreen/bug repellant but I don't know it's status. -
I couldn't agree with you more.

I had one of the $10 round ones and just couldn't get the gluten-free waffles to cook evenly and crisp up the way I like it so I sprung for the Krupps Expert and love it. I justified it because if I don't make good waffles then I don't get them!
