ARCHIVED Is A Medical Dx Crucial For You?
Eriella replied to radgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Please don't get the impression that my school didn't go out of the way to accommodate me. They just couldn't cook special meals without paperwork and have been great since. I think there would have been more wiggle room if I couldn't get the paperwork. Luckily my doctors are very good about listening to me and what I say about my body. I said gluten made... -
ARCHIVED Is A Medical Dx Crucial For You?
Eriella replied to radgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My tests came back negative, but I was already feeling better by not eating gluten, so in the end that was enough for me, but not enough for my school. The only reason I sought a dx was that my college requires a meal plan and I needed a dx to get gluten free food. -
ARCHIVED Normal Food Suggestions
Eriella replied to Suffering in Ohio's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For normal food- always read the label-- but most ice creams are okay UNLESS the mix-ins contain gluten (no cookie dough, cookies and cream...). Tostitos and Fritos are okay, as is the frito bean dip. Snickers and 3 Musketeers bars are okay too. As far as entrees-- the easiest thing to do is stick to whole foods, which are easier to cook and healthier (despite... -
Hi, I am going to a conference at the University of South Carolina in Columbia later this month, and I was wondering if there were any safe restaurants within walking distance of the campus. Does anyone know of any?

ARCHIVED Looking Pregnant
Eriella replied to pebbles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As far as looking pregnant-- I wear lots of empire waisted blouses with dance paints (they stretch and grow with me). To get the bloating down I drink tons to water, eat something with salt (tortilla chips or pretzels), and eat lots of fruit. Between going gluten free and eating those foods, I have a lot fewer problems with it. When I went off gluten I dropped... -
Chocolate, Chocolate, and more CHOCOLATE From their website: "Guests with Gluten allergens can review menu ingredient listings on our website for gluten free options. Gluten bread/rolls can be given as a replacement for non-gluten free rolls in the following locations: Minetown Restaurant, Craftbarn Kitchen, Decades and Crustano's. For gluten free rolls...

ARCHIVED "younger" People And Celiac
Eriella replied to Teacher1958's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I completely agree! At least my local bar stocked Redbridge, otherwise it feels like I never get to do anything "normal". The really hard part for me is all of the social events, especially the school sponsored ones for my departments, where I get to watch people eat and answer questions about my health. And you are broke so you can't afford the expensive... -
ARCHIVED "younger" People And Celiac
Eriella replied to Teacher1958's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed in the middle of my junior year of college. While it is tough, it would have been a lot worse in high school and middle school. The rough part of getting diagnosed while you are in college is that not all colleges are equally accommodating. I know that had I known before I went to college, I would have gone to a school with more dining options... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free 2 Months And Burned Out
Eriella replied to bellabrit7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are going through withdrawl. You know how hard it is for crack addicts-- it is just as bad for you. It sucks, but you need to feel how much better you are off gluten so you won't want to cheat-- and that can take up to 6 months. Trust me-- I know how hard it is. Last night I got to watch my friends binge on warm cookies (that the waiter so kindly put... -
HEllo, Welcome to the board! As far as food additives, most brands have an allergen statement which will say CONTAINS WHEAT (or others) or NO ALLERGENS. If it has an allergen statement, but wheat is not listed, then all you have to do is look for barley, malt, and rye in the ingredient list. If there is no allergen statement, you should look for wheat...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed & Work In A Bakery
Eriella replied to melmak5's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! I know that some people are fine being around flour and other people can't stand it. There is no problem touching flour, so there is no need to quit; however, a lot of people do get sick by breathing in flour. What you can do is wear a simple mask and powderless gloves when you are mixing dough, and then if you are decorating or packaging just wear... -
ARCHIVED Fiber Supplement?
Eriella replied to JamiD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Instead of getting fiber through a supplement, I try to get my 25 g/day through food. Some easy ways to get it are: Apple (5) Banana (4) Blueberries (4) Grapefruit (6 for 1/2 of it) Raspberries (8) Strawberries (4) Avocado (12) Broccoli (11) Cooked carrots (6) Corn (5) Peas (9) Sweet Potato (6) Brown rice (8) Almonds (4) Black Beans (15) flax... -
Here is what I have learned from dating someone from a family of biologists-- Lactose is the sugar that is naturally produced in cow milk. It is not normal sugar, but just part of the molecule, as in casein, the protein in milk. If you have a lactose problem in means that your small intestine does not produce enough lactase, the enzyme to break down the...

ARCHIVED Celiac Blood Tests Came Back Negative!
Eriella replied to sneezydiva's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I totally get where you are coming from and am in the same boat. I have a very similar story. However, I decided to be "that girl". I decided my health was more important that what people said about me. As far as what you tell people, here is my rule: if they are close family or friends (the kind that you wouldn't clean your house before they came over... -
ARCHIVED Misguided Frustration- Newbie Anxiety
Eriella replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It will get better soon, but you will still have times where you will take it out on your husband. I have been gluten-free since April and just blew up at my bf over nothing because I was so frustrated at trying to handle everyone at work bending over backwards to accommodate vegetarians, a diet of choice, but making no accommodations for me. You just need... -
ARCHIVED Casein Issues
Eriella replied to Eriella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks-- it is the milk. We have figured that much out. I am going off milk for 2 weeks, seeing if it makes me sick, then will stay off until I feel better. I think that it is lactose, not casein (or at least hoping) Thanks for the suggestions! -
ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Cheat On This Diet?
Eriella replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just want to offer the opposite side of the coin... My blood work shows no antibodies and my GI decided not to do an endoscopy for a lot of very good reasons (I will be switching insurance several times in the next few years, we already know it is gluten, so it doesn't make a difference if it is intolerance or celiac...). I know gluten caused my health problems... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
Eriella replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This is so true! I was in Europe last fall for 15 weeks, and we could play spot the tourist by the end! You can tell Americans because of their size, their loudness, their jeans, their sweatshirts, and their shoes In fact, people always assumed I was German or English because I was thin/talked quietly/dressed well. However, I think if we did change the... -
ARCHIVED So Impatient For Signs Of Improvement
Eriella replied to Boffin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As far as sharing pots and pans, you SHOULD have new stuff, but realistically it is not always possible. At least have a new toaster (or get toaster bags) or wash the toaster oven tray thoroughly between uses, bread machine pan and rotater, and a new colander. Everything else should be fine if you throughly was it in between gluten/non-gluten. A lot... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free And Vegetarian?
Eriella replied to yellowcanary's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can be a gluten-free vegetarian easily! Rice and beans, peanut butter, rice noodle spaghetti, macaroni and cheese (with rice noodles), Thai food, cereal, quesadillas, burritos, shish kebabs, baked potatoes, salads, omelets... and the list goes on and on. A vegan would be very hard, but veggie is doable. -
ARCHIVED Help For My Teenager
Eriella replied to kyss's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've been there... it gets much easier. First thing is that she has to want to feel better, get over the grief of loosing a major portion of her food and come to terms that it is something that she has to do (it is rough-- no pizza, no french fries, no brownies). Tell her, or better yet let her find out, that going off gluten completely will make her feel... -

ARCHIVED So Impatient For Signs Of Improvement
Eriella replied to Boffin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lactose causes very little harm-- that is why you see lactose intolerant people eating ice cream and other form of cheating! It just makes their stomach ache. Casein could cause more of a problem, but I am not sure to what degree (I know my mother and sister have lactose issues and cheat, my aunt has a casein issue and we do not even think about having milk... -
ARCHIVED New To celiac disease...recommendations For Convenience Foods?
