ARCHIVED Only A Few Weeks In And Weary At Not Trusting What S gluten-free
YoloGx replied to Medz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Its really tough especially at first. Its best to just make and bring your own. I take a little zippered bag with blue ice in it and some munchies as well as a thermos wherever I go. You can thank your friend for the brownies and then later give them to someone else. At some point you may want to explain to her what you have to go through, or not depending... -

Tell me about it. Denial is thick in many families etc. Boyfriends too in my experience--as well as the AMA. Meanwhile, what happens to the "UBO's" after one has been on an anti gluten diet after a while. Do they stay or go away? Are they in any way significant? Any body know?? Bea -
For a while my boyfriend got help using the Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome info. online. They list doctors in various places as well as offer some herbs that can help (he still uses some of them--and they do seem to help--though for him he needs the T-4--but without the initial treatment with the T-3 the T-4 did him little good). The big emphasis is on T-...

Yay! Go girl!! Bea PS--they sell carob in containers at Whole Foods as well as in bulk at bulk herb stores (which should be OK__just not in the same store where they sell bulk glutenous items). Usually the carob has trace nut contamination so keep that in mind...I find it best to take it every other day or more apart than that for this reason.....

I tried repeatedly to get through to my relatives about all this--but unfortunately now the result is that they all think I am nuts. So now I desist and just do my own thing overall. If that is a cop out so be it. I can only take so much beating. I find its better to put my energy elsewhere where its more appreciated. I have noticed meanwhile that if I feel... -

Oh Lynn, maybe we are not so very different. Though incredibly perhaps I have been a little "luckier". I too have been bitten by ticks and had strange recurring fevers, panic attacks and dizziness and even have had visions and degraded nerves--and of course no one could figure out why. By "luck" a few years later I developed a frozen shoulder. Of course standard... -
Whereas steroids may be what you need if you do actually have microscopic colitis, it wouldn't be my first choice since the side effects can be dangerous. Plus steroids just cover up symptoms rather than address them directly. I agree however that the thing to look at here is the damage to the villi. There are non steroid ways to soothe and help heal...

Dear "Still Tired of Doctors!" I love your approach! Wish I had the cahungas to smack my siblings on their heads etc. Instead I yelled at them after they did what I asked them not to do and got repeatedly ill afterwards due to CC. It didn't get through however. In the end I am deemed both too sensitive and too crazy. So I just avoid them in that area... -
Hi Link, Welcome to the board! Maybe at some point as a nurse you could help start a local campaign to help improve the AMA's awareness of celiac? Despite the fact you don't have insurance, there are certain blood tests that are inexpensive that can indicate whether or not you potentially have celiac. I think by Enterolab?? Someone help me here... ...

I agree--at this point they know the score as much as they are willing to, so just ignore their comments and change the subject. Alternatively, just don't eat dinner with them any more if they prove to be too obnoxious. I have had to do this latter choice since several family members have actually made me ill by spreading flour dust in the air and then... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well I am definitely glad I have been using sea salt all these years plus drinking plenty of purified water and also taking liquid trace sea minerals. I remember liking celtic sea salt previously and found it better than regular sea salt, so I am going to try that--with the crystals etc. For me I don't have a problem if the sea salt has a little natural iodine... -

Swimmr--Seems not. Sole is the name of crystalized salt in water in a special saturated ratio. I just looked it up on Google like Ali suggested. Ali--is it really helping you--or are you confusing its benefits with all the water you are now drinking? As well as your new more alkaline, vegetable rich diet. Is there any way to tell? Bea -

YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Ali, I am very glad to hear that the salt is helping you out so much. Have you tried using liquid trace minerals too? I find they are very good as part of one's daily healing ritual. As far as using a salt lamp as a source of salt, I'd have to investigate it more since I might not trust it otherwise...who knows where and what all it was exposed to... -
The packaged raw sunflower seeds at TJ's have never caused me a problem. I avoid bulk bins. If I need something and there is no small package to get it in, I have occasionally ordered and bought a big bag--did that for my roomie so he can make his own tahini from sesame seeds. The bag will last forever, however it also is saving him a bundle. Bea

I so agree Ali--drinking at least 8 glasses of water each day (throughout the day and not just all at once)and having at least some salt (not too much but not too little either) is de riguer!--Am glad your C etc. has finally disappeared! I am so happy for you! You have worked hard for this--kuddos! Meanwhile I finally figured out what has been going on... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Troubles With All Grains?
YoloGx replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A lot of people here have this problem--including me. Though for myself I think its mainly due to problems with fungal overgrowth. The simpler the diet the healthier I am. The specific carbohydrate diet thread here might be something for you to look into. I eat squash to replace a lot of the grains, though I still eat less carb. than when I ate grains. ... -
Hi Jessica, I just checked and the dandelion and yellow dock are supposed to be just fine for lactating mothers. I hope they help! Also the suggestion of eating sauerkraut sounds like a good one. If it works for you, you might want to make your own. Am planning to try it out myself. Home made yogurt fermented for 24 hours is also wonderful for soothing...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I personally think one should follow a balanced diet however one configures it and learn to listen to what your body needs. Eating a lot of fresh vegetables is considered generally to be very healthy, however they should initially be eaten cooked if you have a raw gut or they will be too irritating. Similarly some people do better as vegetarians and others... -

Hi--and welcome Lynayah! I don't know if it matters what kind of yogurt maker you use except that you want to make it so it stays on for at least 24 hours. The idea in general for making yogurt is that you first heat the milk to almost boiling (roughly 175 degrees--or where the milk is starting to froth and about to boil) in a double boiler with water... -
I have the same tendency as you. Bloat and constipation. Checking the thyroid is a good idea--my boyfriend has that problem and thyroid medication has certainly helped him. However he also uses the following remedies as do I. (My thyroid is just fine but I still tend to get C if I don't look out--though not as bad as his.) Magnesium citrate works great...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Waiting Eagerly For The Day The Treatment Goes On Sale?
YoloGx replied to CGally81's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It would be marvelous to not always be such a freak--esp. during trips when finding the right food could be dicey--or even going on a first date and worrying about that kiss from a likely glutenous mouth!! And then there is the whole restaurant thing where you have to make a practical fool of yourself to keep away from possible CC. So yes, do keep us... -

Hi Ali, I agree eating more vegetables is always good. Is that what you mean by a more alkalyzing diet? Or are you also going to go the vegetarian route and avoid meat for a while? Hope you can eat beans and nuts... Bea -

The poster ended up by saying that he is a professionally-trained lawyer. His advice to us is to cash in all our bonds and savings and send it all to him. As he points out, if we wouldn't do that, then why would we entrust our precious health to the care of a stranger - professionally-trained or otherwise whose abilities we have no knowledge of or trust... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Wow Ali--they really goofed didn't they! If I were you I would do the irate patient thing to get them moving. Talk to your doctor about it, tell her how upset you are and let her exert more pressure on them. I agree--if you can avoid surgery or drugs its always best. Nevertheless its a good idea to get checked out to see what is happening. Meanwhile... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Just thought I'd add that my yogurt experiment didn't work. Seems it needs to be heated up beforehand after all. The heat from the pilot light just wasn't enough to make it work given that the milk was so cold and there was so much of it (nearly 2 gallons!). So I heated it up this morning to just before boiling and am now cooling it off. No shortcuts here...
