ARCHIVED How Do I Handle This Social Invite?
YoloGx replied to gluten-no-more's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree--bring your lunch and drink. Say you are on a diet. No need to explain. Or bring a big dish, make sure you serve enough for yourself first and then have it available for others... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Ali, This time I got the url to show. To me Nina and Clark's diet looks very much like the paleo diet. I like the scd since it really seems to work better fro me. For instance I need the cheese to be more aged. I think we are all individual in our responses. I also like the 24 hour yogurt. It is interesting that they limit the type and amount... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hi Ali, I think you are right about the low carb thing. Am so glad to hear that you are improving so much and able to reduce your insulin, esp. with what sounds like reduced carbs and the use of coconut oil. It makes me want to go buy some again. I was using coconut oil for a while but then stopped about 6 months ago when I was first on the paleo diet... -
ARCHIVED Tried Oats For The First Time...ouch!
YoloGx replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interestingly before I originally suspected I might have celiac I had made a practice of eating a bowl of oatmeal before going to bed at night to help me sleep better. Which it did--however after 6 months of this my migraines got worse and more frequent, plus eventually I started shaking. My nerves were out of whack! A naturopath/chiropractor suggested it... -
Honestly I doubt she'd want to make you ill!! Better to feign sickness and not show up or leave early claiming a tummy ache or something than eat their food and get really sick. We all need to learn to be prepared in these kinds of occasions. Bottom line. If you had brought your own food your hostess would likely have been relieved. Your idea of bringing...

I make 24 hour home made yogurt. I then can just use the yogurt if I need something milky and if necessary add a little water or whey with a some stevia if I want it to taste sweeter. Its very healing for the gut and helps with digestion. Sometimes too I will use coconut milk...However overall I seem to be allergic to the nut milks as well as the vitamin...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
All about eggs: Meanwhile I am still leery about using eggs. Historically I get migraines from them, though one egg cooked in food now and then has been relatively OK, though even then I am not entirely certain; I did have trouble with various goodies using grains with the egg added when I was just doing the gluten free foods. The plain pancakes (mainly... -

Interesting links you guys! I agree with Ali that candida can be a long term nightmare. Ali--I found garlic helps plus oregano oil. If you don't want to take the oil internally, you can apply it to your wrists. Ditto with thyme oil which really kills the yeast etc. Barberry is another good candida killer, assuming you can get past the bitter taste.--and... -

I'm afraid so. Some of us don't tolerate oats either, no matter how pure they are. Bea -

I am a little confused by your missive--is this just a meeting at a restaurant? If so, I highly suggest bringing your own food and drink. If that isn't possible, eat beforehand and just say you aren't hungry or pretend to eat but don't. If this is going to be how you are supposed to eat all the time, you definitely need to find some alternative--like... -
I actually had a glutening with effects that lasted 5 weeks! But that was when I breathed in wheat flour dust courtesy of my brother who made 7 pies for Thanksgiving. I agree-it could be either item or both. Paleo or specific carbohydrate diet (scd) are two of the best diets for healing and avoiding CC! I so agree. If you are reacting to milk products...

Generally speaking its best to avoid "natural flavors" since they are often made with the traditional alcohol extraction method for flavorings--and thus they often have gluten since most alcohol has gluten in it... Ironically for us its often better if they are artificial flavorings...unless its specifically gluten free like gluten free vanilla. But generally...

ARCHIVED I've Been Glutened....
YoloGx replied to amandabear20's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This has happened to me so many times. It really is a learning curve. It helps determine who you can really trust and who not. Mainly though you have to train your boyfriend etc. Let him know how awful you feel when cross contaminated (CC) with gluten this way and its probable cause. Not to make him feel guilty but to get him to be extra careful. If he cares... -

The brownies sound plenty delish to me too! I'm betting you could bake some goodies with squash as an important ingredient. Pie or pudding comes readily to mind... Maybe others here have some ideas? It might help to think about making the 3 day fermented cabbage instead if you don't feel ready to try the yogurt. The enzymes will help your son digest... -
Hi Elginx, Did you see this article here on celiac.com? https://www.celiac.com/articles/21499/1/Con...ease/Page1.html My friend G had what I am convinced was the beginning's of Addison's. Years ago he had a mottled brown discoloration on his lower calves and on his ankles. He has had intestinal distress for years. For quite some time he couldn't stand...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That is a funny story!--in retrospect of course after the frustration is over. Just want to reiterate--squash, avocadoes, and as Ali keeps saying, coconut oil. I eat a lot of sunflower seeds too.--they are great in a pinch..and mucho vegetables along with the meat and eggs, yogurt and fruit. Recently I am finding cheddar and swiss cheese to finally be good... -

Thanks Ali! I'll definitely save the whey! I used 1 1/2 gallons of milk for the yogurt preparations last night. The yogurt goes pretty fast since both G and I use it. Making the yogurt cheese seems like it will be a lot of fun. Is it really sufficient to just add the whey to the cabbage and not the yogurt solids for the fermented cabbage making process... -
Welcome to the Forum! All my anxiety left after I went off all trace gluten. This meant also avoiding cross contamination (CC) from a variety of sources as well as changing my soaps, detergents, shampoos, toothpaste etc. plus making sure I wasn't getting glutened from building materials (like Fixall, pre mixed plaster and the like). I also had to make...

ARCHIVED Anyone Familar With Candida?
YoloGx replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
A lot of people here have had candida overgrowth problems in addition to celac. I have had it most of my life. In February I went off all grains as well as fruit and it really helped. However it just seemed to stay that way. Any grain or fruit and pretty soon the yeasty beasties were back. I am now on the specific carbohydrate diet (scd)--and its helping... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Thanks Ali--I'll do just that. I was thinking dripped yogurt might make a good substitute for it but wasn't sure. How cool does the dripping yogurt need to be? Does it help to leave it out of the fridge to ferment even more? Thus I'll make twice as much yogurt with this next batch. I found my old stainless steel pot I use for making large quantities... -
I get my spices from a store here in San Jose called "down to earth". They have bulk herbs and spices as well as general supplements. Its a health food supplement store so there are no bulk grains etc. so thus no cross contamination. I also asked them if I needed to worry about CC there and they called their suppliers and found there was no danger. And its...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
YoloGx replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi everybody, Jan you are encouraging me by your example to try some of those desserts sooner. Have been waiting since I have been historically so very allergic to eggs and nuts. Am hoping with this new diet that my allergic response will die down--and actually just be an intolerance that goes away. Is this wishful thinking?? I still haven't tracked down... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hi Ali, I just wanted to comment on the thumping which in my opinion could also relate to the restless leg syndrome. My heart used to thump and finally got around to rattling upon any real exertion as well as in the middle of the night and my restless legs got worse and worse at night so I oculd hardly sleep at all. I thought this was due to an old... -

Hi Liz, I wonder if you introduced the fermented foods (home made 24 hour yogurt and/or cabbage) if you all would feel a bit better? You and your son might also need to have some carbs too to keep the weight on -- I find eating more squash (summer and winter) really helps. I saw you had a bit of zuchinni, however he/you might need more. Ditto with...
