  1. I agree with GFResh--try the slippery elm, marshmallow root and probiotics first, however if the herbs etc. don't work, or don't work enough, then consider going off grains, and if that isn't enough try the SCD. No matter what however I would also suggest making your own 24 hour home made yogurt and/or fermented cabbage if you can. The probiotics from home...
  2. It would be interesting if there was real scientific studies behind these claims. I do know that while many in my family either have celiac or are gluten intolerant, I am the only one that has type O blood--and I am a lot more sensitive than the rest of them. Nevertheless, we all are related to everyone else, so its a bit of a genetic stew at this...
  3. I agree with mawmaw. Some say a type O person is more likely to have celiac than others, particularly if you are of north European extraction (since 33 % of north Europeans have the gene potential to get celiac--that and Italians probably due to interbreeding during Roman times as well as Viking incursions previous to that). Type O is the oldest blood type...
  4. You might want to consider going off all grains and go on a specific carbohydrate diet (scd). Elaine Gottschall wrote a book about it called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." You can look it up online for more info. plus there is a forum here on celiac.com about it started by AliB. It is helping me immensely--I have had a puffed up belly forever it seems. I went...
  5. Recently I stumbled upon the specific carbohydrate diet (scd). It really might help you to heal more quickly. It is making a huge dif. for me. Its particularly good for someone in a crisis such as yourself. Basically it means going off all grains and anything mucilaginous as well as complex carbohydrates and sugars. The good news is that with home made...
  6. I too have had to eliminate oats and beta glucans and wheat based vitamin E. Fortunately there are alternatives out there. Some vitamin E is OK--it just has to be not wheat based. I like to use Desert Essence Organics lotions and shampoo--though more often I use TJ's simple, cheap Pure Castile Soap for my hair and their also cheap tea tree oil soap. Bea
  7. I don't since I am allergic to eggs. The good news however is that unlike in the past before I went off all trace gluten I no longer seem to get ill very easily at all -- unless I get CC--which now happens less and less since I am a lot more careful these days...
  8. Thanks Pele! Goes to show this doesn't have to be exact. I am betting in the old pre-refrigeration days etc. it was whatever one had. I just noticed the old acidophilus that I have has FOS in it--which I gather is a no no for the scd. Am thinking maybe I should just use a little of the whey in the cabbage juice from the home made yogurt?? I will check...
  9. Thanks Sherry--it really is hard for me to believe that I am actually expanding my diet with scd --esp. so quicklyl, but I can't fault fact. Thanks so much for encouraging me! It does seem a bit miraculous, though when I stop and think of the science it makes sense. It just is so different than what I thought!! I will definitely make the cabbage juice...
  10. Sounds a bit like me. I went off all grains and fruit etc. to help, though of course that really limited my diet. Now am trying the specific carbohydrate diet (scd). And while it still means no grains and no regular sugars etc., it does have more variety than what I was eating. The very cool thing is that now after just a few days on it I now can tolerate...
  11. Yeah, you are very lucky--esp. with that man! Though with the hospital I wouldn't completely trust the gluten free menu. There is gluten-free and gluten-free! if you know what I mean...Best to check it out. Many people really don't get the whole problem with CC or little things like natural flavors, and additives and fillers if they aren't obvious.
  12. Woof woof! Meanwhile, thought this article from the Mayo Clinic on increased celiac incidence might be relevant: Open Original Shared Link But honestly I think supposed increased incidence of celiac has more to do with people now being more aware of this condition -- although its also true that the standard American diet and level of stress could bring...
  13. Hi Violet Blue--your chronic condition is truly unfortunate. Have you considered going without grains? It often helps with multiple chronic conditions. It is of course a bigger commitment than just going without gluten. But it can help a great deal. Am now trying the specific carbohydrate diet (scd). There is a group here on celiac.com for it. Am finding...
  14. Pele and all-- any suggestions on your basic recipe for the fermented cabbage juice? I am betting it was on this site earlier on--but thought I'd ask... I don't see it in Elaine's book. So far the scd diet is working great for me! I tried some cherries yesterday and today peaches. My body seems to be adapting quickly. For me being able to eat fruit again...
  15. This is news to me. I just thought it was that more people are now aware of celiac in the states just because more of us are making a fuss and eventually the truth outs. Bea
  16. lol!!
  17. I am betting that miracle will happen as long as you are careful to not get glutened--it truly is something to celebrate! Bea
  18. On that line, I suggest making extra and generally freezing food at home just in case. You could also train your husband more if that is possible. You could also get a little mini refrigerator and hot plate for your room. Though really this situation with the hospitals has got to change. Kaiser for instance is better than the were but not at all perfect-...
  19. Ditto for me--almost ever since they put me back on gluten when I was 4. By age 5 or 6 I had bronchitis every year. Towards the end it wasn't uncommon for me to get ill for more than a month or even two or three. The last time I really got sick was initially from several incidents of Cross Contamination (CC). But then it was bacterial, whereas normally it...
  20. Hi Ali and all--I wasn't able to connect to the the url you (Ali) suggested: "If we snack in the evening the body is using carbs or protein for fuel and is not triggered into the fat-burning mode. Here, I think maybe Byron Richards can explain it far better than I can........... Open Original Shared Link ... sulin.html" The leptin issue sounds...
  21. Here's what Elaine's Knowledge Base says about stevia: Stevia Elaine writes: Stevia belongs to a family called Terpenoids. According to my book called The Organic Constitutents of Higher Plants by Trevor Robinson, 2nd edition, page 158, "This class of glycosides (terpenoids) often have physiological effects on mammals and microorganisms." Perhaps the...
  22. Ali, that is very interesting about Leptin. When I get a little more time I will read the article you referenced us with, probably tonight. So Ali, please help me with this Stevia controversy. I don't see anywhere that it really could be a problem with the scd diet however Sherry said it was on the illegal list. It has glycosides but no sugars. Here's...
  23. Hi Jennifer, It is easy to make the 24 hour yogurt. Some say to just heat it up in a double boiler so it froths a little on the edges and others say to use a thermometer so it won't go over 170 degrees. I don't have a double boiler, however I do have a very large stainless steel bowl. I then put a small stainless steel measuring cup in the center and rest...
  24. I've heard the same thing about Italy--but not in such detail. That sounds so wonderful! I forgot to mention before that the Italians apparently have the 33% gene potential for celiac too. I think its due to the northern peoples being brought down by Caesar to help make his troops more invincible since they were so much taller and known for their superior...
  25. Hi Jennifer, Thank you for the compliment--I do enjoy sharing what I know so others won't have to suffer as much as my friend and I have had to so needlessly--and as it seems your friend is also now so unfortunately doing. Its too late tonight to get into the whole candida question, however it is very possible that the burning could be related to candida...
