  1. Interestingly enough my mother was in a research program during the 1920's for sprue. Unfortunately however the research seems to have been lost. She was in that program in San Francisco for roughly 14 years. Later however no one believed her except the guy from the Mayo Clinic who retired to a small desert town where my parents worked as archaeologists....
  2. Hi Karangel, I noticed you just added me as a friend. Good to meet you so to speak! I coulnd't send you a personal note however due to your not having chosen that feature. You might want to tweak it sometime. So am sending my message through this thread. I checked out your posts and see your husband has psoriasis. What worked for me ultimately besides...
  3. It seems like a doctor trained in Europe would do better since over there this condition is widely recognized since 1950 -- unlike here in the US for the most part. Bea
  4. Well said! For me what turned it around was going off all trace gluten, even in cleaning materials and building supplies as well as vitamins, tinctures, cough medicine etc., NSAIDS, oils, shampoos, lip balm and cosmetics etc. and of course cross contaminated foods! I now always wash my hands before putting anything in my mouth since I never know if what...
  5. My understanding is that "Failure to thrive" (i.e., not growing) as an infant is due to being introduced to gluten containing grains. This is a classic symptom of celiac sprue. The fact your mom has celiac doubles this indication. Due to this and your response as an adult both on and off gluten, I don't think you really need any more tests than that. Your...
  6. It probably helped--along with going of the gluten. It may be eventually you won't need to take the de-glycerized licorice at all--or very rarely. It does actually work. Bea
  7. It is very likely that with your new diet you are much healthier than you were. H. Pylori isn't that uncommon but a healthier gut can resolve many issues. By the way--did you ever try using the licorice root? Bea
  8. Well--I would guess this board is self selected by interest. All really are welcome. Most here seem to like to help each other. Most seem to have gone through great difficulties before getting here where we get more useful information from each other than we often do from other sources. As far as heredity and being born with celiac or not, my understanding...
  9. I hadn't heard of that. Who did you get that confirmed with? Bea
  10. I have also heard that another part of your anatomy can be affected rather than the villi or the skin... And even with the usual tests its often hard to find. I think too that many are very intolerant of gluten even if they don't clinically have celiac.
  11. There seems to be some kind of resistance in this country for doctors to even think of celiac as a possible diagnosis. One person told me it was the lack of drugs etc. needed to cure it--those no push by the pharmaceuticals and no real money in it for surgery unless say you get cancer of the gut etc. All I can say is that it is very noticeable absence and...
  12. I was diagnosed as an infant due to failure to thrive when introduced to grains. I was put back on them at age four however and grew so they thought I literally had grown out of it. However my health proceeded to have difficulties ever since. I finally figured it out due to extreme sensitivity to gluten. Previously I thought it was an allergy but found out...
  13. You could possibly have celiac but the doc just didn't find it--its not always so easy to find. Or you could have a high degree of gluten intolerance. Gluten intolerance is common actually, more common than celiac which is one out of 133 more or less. It is also said 42% of the American public has some kind of gluten sensitivity. So your doc is apparently...
  14. Actually I did have that kind of thing happen long ago--about once a month. Soon after I discovered I might have celiac through tusing the Merck manual and the process of elimination. However Kaiser etc. didn't clue me in on having to avoid all trace gluten so the fevers still happened now and then. For me they lasted longer however, often 3 days though sometimes...
  15. This is a very delicate issue. I personally partially failed trying to push diet onto my siblings and mother. the biggest way I failed them was alienating them by being what they considered "too push" although I just thought of it as helping them and giving them info. Of course they didn't want to know and I had to move out because it wasn't safe for me to...
  16. Its hard to say--however given you had a raised temp it may be you had a bug that you threw off. Its possible it could be a slight glutening from CC, but given the short duration I think not... However who am I to say? Haven't been fully off the stuff as long as you--only a year and a half completely off all trace gluten. They say over time it gets better...
  17. Yes, but it might be CC'd... Best to check where its made if possible, however often for the minor ingredients they don't do that. Bea
  18. Wow! I am glad you discoverd what was going on. You can grow stevia by the way... Meanwhile I use the plain organic stevia extract from Trader Joe's without extra additives. Have never had a problem with it. Says it is gluten free. Am very sensitive to trace gluten so its unlikely its CC'd.
  19. Hi, I am interested in this SCD diet too. Still need to look at the book. I eat a modified version I think, though I probably eat more winter squash than they would allow. I finally went off yams and sweet potatoes. However I don't eat fruit (due to candida overgrowth complications) so I think it may even out... I get non fat organic yogurt from Trader Joe...
  20. To the previous sender--you go girl! Bea
  21. It sounds like you have already been diagnosed with celiac disease. It also looks like you really do have it since you are having what are probably cross contamination issues. You do need to check and call about vitamins etc. etc. Don't leave it to chance. Your health is at risk here. Its also possible you do have other sensitivities too, however in my...
  22. You are most welcome to the boards! No doubt you will become healthier and healthier and more and more informed! You aren't the only one here that is simply gluten sensitive. Its actually a lot easier to deal with than if you did have celiac. Nevertheless sometimes celiac is very hard to diagnose. If it turns out you are really sensitive to even trace...
  23. I've had a tough time getting rid of the yeast too. Recently I went off all grains and fruit except for lemons (I sweeten them with stevia to make lemonade). It seems to be making a big difference. I have been using squash as an alternative to grains. I recently read something about the official Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It looks like it could help--they...
  24. Most people find that cleaning the normal stainless steel pot one used previously for gluten is just fine. I have even done well when someone at a Thai restaurant just thoroughly cleaned their aluminum pots. Its the baked on stuff on glass that is hard to get rid of in my opinion as well as of course porous surfaces like Teflon. Fortunately the iron pots...
  25. That is tough! I feel for you sister. Some men are so completely selfish! I have two ex boyfriends, both of whom I really like, who just could not get beyond this issue. They are still good friends, but we just don't go beyond that. Its like I have to have a chastity belt on my mouth, lol! However its also true that underneath it, those two guys...
