ARCHIVED Irritable Bowel Plus...
ravenwoodglass replied to AmandaD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
A large number of us were mis-diagnosed with this. IBS is a diagnosis that basically stands for "I BE Stumped" it's given when doctors can not find a cause for problems.... Perhaps because they don't look for food intolerances, whoops maybe it should stand for "I Be Stupid" -

In answer to your question, yes. There are some like myself that are only found through dietary elimination and challange. In some countries the endo is considered the 'Old' Standard not the Gold. American Doctors are, for the most part, very, very far behind in the understanding of gluten intolerance. after my DD's endo the doctor even told her "well, your... -
I think your body is going to tell you what a bad idea it is the first time you do it. Why not just make that pizza on a gluten-free crust? You can also have all the pasta you want, just get a gluten-free brand, I am a big fan of angel hair and have found Thai rice noodles make a great substitute.

ARCHIVED I Ate Gluten....and I Feel Great
ravenwoodglass replied to Janelson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It takes my body 3 full days to react as far as the gut reaction goes. As another poster said I also hate to be a voice of doom and gloom but wait. If you go a week breathe a sigh of relief. -
ARCHIVED Can Skincare/make-up Aggravate Dh?
ravenwoodglass replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have to add that many of us seem to see an increase in problems in the summer. I don't know if it has to do with sun exposure or what but I remember seeing a thread on this. -

For me and my son yes. We also react to grain alcohols which we are not supposed to.... -
ARCHIVED White Spots On Eyes

It may be but I would ask for a refferal to an eye specialist, an MD (I can never think of what they are called) to check this out. -

Has he had any ear infections? My DD lost all speach at about the same age because the infections went away but the fluid didn't. This we found was also gluten related, after being gluten-free she hasn't had any problems with her ears but for many years before that things were a struggle. They have probably looked for this already but I wanted to make sure... -
ARCHIVED Gluten "challenge"
ravenwoodglass replied to redheadheather's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So he was having celiac disease symptoms, the ones you describe are much like my son's were for years. We were told he was just an anxious child and it was showing up in his tummy. My son was not diagnosed until 19, he is now 22, his growth was stunted, 5', and he now is not struggling in technical school like he did through grammer and high school. His... -
AB+ here. I looked at the blood type diet briefly a long time ago, if I followed their thinking there is no way I could be celiac, but I better not eat chicken! Interesting poll though.

Ursula, I am so sorry you have been jumped on so badly. After watching my undiagnosed daughter almost kill herself on these drugs, and having suicidal ideation myself whenever I take these things I also would do anything to find the true cause of my depressive and manic symptoms, it took almost 40 years but I am symptomless unless glutened. The very first...

ARCHIVED Anybody Ever Had Or Heard Of This?
ravenwoodglass replied to mopsie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you checked your cosmetics and shampoos for gluten? Are you female and do you use panty liners? Some (including me) get DH sores really bad from wearing them. It is either the adhesive or something they put on them to reduce odor. It sounds like your house is not gluten-free, I assume you have changed toasters and wash your hands constantly when cooking... -
ARCHIVED Straight To Gastroenterologist?
ravenwoodglass replied to littlestar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gastros didn't help me at all, they just labeled me with IBS and I feel delayed my diagnosis by years. The one who found it in me was an allergist, after years of seeing GIs, neuros, rheumys, shrinks, and bone doctors all they gave me was pills and offers for prozac! I was finally diagnosed by an allergist who guided me through an elimination diet. Get blood... -
ARCHIVED What Do I Have?
ravenwoodglass replied to gagliat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Please be sure to try the gluten-free diet even if blood tests come out negative. I was blood tested (and others) over and aver again over a 5 year period and and our family was spending 17,000 a year on co-pays alone. The gluten-free diet was the only thing that helped. The hard part was finding a doctor to do a 'true' elimination diet. I finally found... -
ARCHIVED Test Results Are In
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I showed up negative on all blood tests, repeatedly. And I am as full blown of a celiac as you can get The way they finally found it with me was with an allergist. He guided me through an elimination diet, quite differnet from just not eating something. First came skin testing to look for actual allergies, then he gave me a diet with only about 5 foods... -
ARCHIVED Prawns?
ravenwoodglass replied to Susansmum's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It does take a while to be feeling better and accidental injestion is common in the early months. Also our family reacts strongly to distilled vinigars, many companies consider them to be gluten-free, so they don't mention it on labels as grain in origin. It will just say distilled vinigar. I always make sure it is distilled from corn before I consume. I... -
Hi , I just wanted to mention what I just found out about rice. Turns out rice has a protein very similar to one of the 3 proteins that celiacs react to. It is very similar to the protein that causes the DH reaction. I discovered this when reading 'Dangerous Grains', I gave the book to my son to take back to school with him and ordered another copy. Since...

Thanks for sharing. I just wish they would get savvy to the depression anxiety connection and mention it once in a while, it's often the first symptom, but at least they did say that some are GI symptom free.

ARCHIVED Hair Colouring At Salon
ravenwoodglass replied to Nicolette's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would be very careful about salon or home coloring. You might try to find a salon with a celiac running or working in it. My DD still colors her hair and has found salons here and at college that have celiac owners or stylists, she asks before making an appointment. I stopped coloring right after I was dianosed, I had so much hair loss anyway it was like... -
Hi All, I have a question. I was diagnosed after 40 years of severe illness. I have a bit of a problem with calling myself diseased at this point. I am healthier than I have been since I was 5 and my symptoms began. I feel strongly that I simply have a genetic difference, I am NOT diseased now but I sure was before I went gluten-free. Does anyone other than...

ARCHIVED Help With Blood Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to Wendyp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yea, welcome to the family. You need to avoid gluten. My own opinion of course, but I quess you could keep injesting till you got sick enough to have a stronger reaction but why? Thyroid problems are also common with gluten intolerance. I would just avoid gluten. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know If ....
ravenwoodglass replied to Danijela's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you waiting for a formal diagnosis before being gluten-free? I hope not. Try taking some sublingual B12 if you don't already. It may help with the problems. They sound almost like the ataxia I used to have. My DD also had spells like these when excercising. Also get on the diet if you are not already or at least do the BRA diet, bananas, rice, plain... -
ARCHIVED Help - Am I A Celia Or Am I Going Mad?
ravenwoodglass replied to tillybean's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds likely that you are. Your symptoms sound very familiar. I'm glad your doctor is looking into it. Be sure to give the diet a try even if tests come back negative. -
ARCHIVED Got Better- Now Getting Worse!
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
"It was like one week in August, I drank SKYY vodka (which is clearly labeled gluten-free even though distilled beverages are gluten-free anyway- SKYY is triple distilled) and tonic with a lime and then a week later I drank it and had a gluten-like reaction. I just don't know what to think anymore." Our family reacts strongly to distilled grain beverages...
