ARCHIVED Intestine "scalloped" - Anyone Else Told This After Endoscopy?
grey replied to GFinMN's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had scalloping turn up in my endoscopy too. In contrast to ravenwoodglass's daughter (is that what DD stands for?), I had complete villous atrophy, inflammation, and crypt hyperplasia in the biopsy. It definately indicates that there's damage to your small intestine. It's hard to define a 'worse' case of celiac, because even if your intestines are very... -
ARCHIVED Fruits And Vegetables
grey replied to radgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't eat raw vegetables and some fruits. One of my doctors suggested juicing, which has been GREAT. My problem with a lot of raw stuff seems to have been the fiber. Juicing gives you the nutrients, but takes out much (most?) of the fiber with the pulp. (I can, it seems, eat fresh bananas, peaches and blueberries, but they're pretty digestible in general... -
I've read about leaky gut (intestinal permeability) being the cause of the additional intolerances as well. The image I have in my head is that my immune system is on hyper-overdrive already from the celiac, like a swarm of bees, and so things that would get mild reaction get an intense one. Most foods we eat cause our bodies to produce antibodies, but...

Melmak, I know how you feel! I can't help wondering how much faster and better my diss would have been done if I could have maintained concentration. Wish I had been dx'd before I was done. Good luck with celiac/thesis combo and I hope you have a reasonable and understanding advisor. I guess my concern is in letting people know my brain isn't working right...

I really, really appreciate the posts on this thread. It's so good to be reminded that even if it takes a while, it does get better. Non-celiacs seem to expect me to be all better by now (2 months) and I'm definately improving, but I'm still struggling. Not that I want pity, but I feel guilty that I'm not better yet, especially since they (friends and colleagues...

Thanks for the rsponse. It's all so confusing! I seem to be pretty good on rice, but I'm wondering if I'm reacting to potatoes right now as I seem to have D and other symptoms when I eat them. I've been trying various breads, but I don't eat that much of them, just a sandwich or two during the week. I think I'll drop the bread for a little while and see if...

ARCHIVED Facial Moisturizers & Public Soap
grey replied to grey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
tom's of maine moisturizing hand soap has wheat protein in it, for one. It's not the only liquid soap that does, particularly ones that are 'moisturizing' or 'natural.' Tom's is one that used to be used by my secretary, which is why I know about it. Smells great (lavender), but I choose to avoid it and check others. One of my favorite lines, L'Occitaine,... -
Cindy, thank you for the links! I knew the popcorn was ok, but didn't know about the dressings.Sad about the Italian, I used to use it for a marinade... I give myself B12 injections every other day; but I need to get a B-complex vitamin and I'll check out Nature Made. I'm surprised to hear about Lungberg Chips - I had assumed they must be cc since they...

Oh this is a brilliant idea! I may have to drive a bit, but it would be worth it. I'm definately going to do it! I haven't made gumbo in years but I should again - I'm glad to know that the flour will make a roux well. I haven't played with flours at all. thanks!

ARCHIVED Trying A New Way Of Vitamins
grey replied to melrobsings's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have fatigue as a major symptom. The best thing for me has been my every-other-day B12 injections (I give them to myself); I was dx'd w/ b12 def. long before celiac and may have PA too. I've been taking Garden of Life Living Multi women's formula. I don't know yet if it really helps w/ fatigue, but it's the first vitamin I've been able to take w/o severe... -
ARCHIVED Facial Moisturizers & Public Soap
grey replied to grey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm glad to hear it wasn't just me who got unhelpful responses from Olay - they were the first call I made re. skin/makeup/soap and I became really confused, overwhelmed, and kind of depressed about how I'd ever figure this out. I use Garnier shampoo, and they were nice (thank goodness). I haven't tried the long and strong version, but may look for it... -
Thank you so much for the Hormel link! That's a lot of products that might be easier to find. And I'm definately going to look for the refried beans with the tortillas mentioned earlier in the thread. I too wish there were a low-fat spicy sausage - I have great soup recipe for chick peas with andouille that would be gluten-free. I use almond milk in...

ARCHIVED Facial Moisturizers & Public Soap
grey posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm confused about moisturizers (and cosmetics). I use oil of olay w/ sunscreen and haven't been able to tell if it's gluten-free. When I;ve asked questions of cosmetic co.s they mostly seem to be willing to tell me the ingredients, but not if it's gluten-free. I'm still trying to figure out which ingredients are bad, but even aside from the individual... -
I cook it and form it up, then sear it in oil (I use grapeseed) and season with herbes aux provence, salt, & pepper. Then I crack an egg or two on top, add some more salt and pepper. When the eggs have cooked, I add in some salsa verde. I've also added tortilla strips at the point of the eggs too. Searing the polenta gives it a little crunch and a different...

ARCHIVED Hiatal Hernia?
grey replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have a hiatal hernia too that they found doing my endoscopy/biopsy for celiac. The gi doctor didn't treat it; I have pretty bad GERD and he gave me nexium for that. In the hospital, they started me on Protonix for the Gerd and it has helped a lot. I also generally follow the GERD diet, although I do eat pepper, and take a probiotic. Now I'm wondering... -
Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my breakdown. I do feel better than when I started gluten-free, but with still feeling weak and sick it's hard not to worry that something else is wrong or that I'm doing something wrong. Every time I hear that it took others several months to feel better gives me hope that things will be fine. I've been eating...

Get this. My insurance company will not cover a dietician for Celiac. They will for diabetes - because it's medically necessary. Apparently, diet isn't medically necessary for Celiac! None of the doctors where I am have treated active celiac. How this can be, I don't know, but such seems to be the case. None of the dieticians have either. So, through...

What do you mean by overcompensator? Are you suggesting that the sugar cravings I'm experiencing aren't sugar cravings? Or that they aren't physical cravings, but psychological? I'm willing to believe it's totally unrelated, but I didn't think it'd hurt to ask. My initial concern was whether this might be a sign of a food allergy to sugar, as definately...

I'm working on making peace with the cravings, now that I'm hearing they're normal. It's hard because I feel out-of-control. I'm not used to having an appetite at all, and I'm worried I'm going to gain a lot of weight. I'm not going to buy that Namaste mix again yet either - not til things have calmed down! Luckily (!?) I can't eat chocolate because...

ARCHIVED Getting Off Birth Control - A Good Idea?
grey replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Kassandra, When I was sixteen, I got put on the pill. I didn't start menstruating until I was 13 or 14 and then I had only two periods over the next years. My body fat was very t very low because I was an elite competitive swimmer - I was told that was the problem, not my weight which was around 95-100 and I was 5' to 5'1. The concern was not late... -
My peripheral neuropathy was on both sides, except for the random pains (like being stuck with a hot needle), same thing with the weakness. I think this is fairly typical. The way that you have things on one side should probably be checked right away - like tonight, or ASAP - as others have been saying. Do you or have you been having headaches? If so,...

Chuy's! I went to grad school in Austin. Great to know that they were accomodating. Oh, do I miss Austin food.

ARCHIVED Popcorn
grey replied to Hanna GF LF cheerleader's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Newman's Own microwave popcorn is gluten-free. For microwave popcorn, though, read the ingredients carefully. Some have malt (from barley) and other things in the 'butter solution'. I've been making popcorn from the kernels on the stove; less anxiety about what's in it (and no guilt about how microwave popcorn plant workers were getting sick from production... -
I don't know if it's something I need or something that I don't - like the craving indicates a bad reaction to sugar? I had a ruffles craving too - but they definately made me sick. I think that craving was the salt! If you

It's a relief to hear that this happens to others. Even after eating that whole package, I want more! It's sick. And, I felt dreadful afterwards & my gi system wasn't so thrilled either. Not right away, but a little later; now I think I have a yeast infection. clearly this isn't something I should do a lot! My doctor was delighted that I ate...
