ARCHIVED Potatoe Chips
cruelshoes replied to 1morething's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just because I am totally anal retentive , I will mention that the Lays list posted above is out of date. The most current list on the frito lay website was updated 11/13/08. There are quite a few discrepancies between the two. Open Original Shared Link We have never had a problem with any Lays product in our house, so make your own choice... -

ARCHIVED How Do I Tell Her?!
cruelshoes replied to Mackenziesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here is a link to the ROCK group support group finder. My son is 10, and he was diagnosed when he was 6. He has taken it like a champ, and never complains. I think how we act about it goes a long way to how they will act about it. Our family motto about the whole thing is "let's make it work!" When he was diagnosed, I promised him that he would never... -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Vanilla Cake Mix
cruelshoes replied to LauraWass's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Avoid AT ALL COSTS the Arrowhead mills cake. It is the grittiest, grossest thing I have ever eaten. Like chowing down on a pile of vanilla sand. Gack. Pamela's vanilla cake is great. I have one in the oven as we speak for my son's birthday today. The smell, taste and texture are great, it's not that expensive, and it's easy to find. -

ARCHIVED Sara Lee Pie Without The Crust?
cruelshoes replied to darkmindead's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does Sara Lee make a pie filling separately? Or a crustless pie? If you are asking if it is OK to eat the pie filling out of the pie, the answer would be definitely no. Sara Lee discloses all forms of gluten in their labeling. You should be able to read the label on their products to know if they are safe. Here is their reply to an email earlier this... -
ARCHIVED 18 Days Gluten Free - Too Late For Antibody Blood Test?
cruelshoes replied to beingmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If it were me, I would have the complete celiac panel run immediately, and then let those results determine the next steps. No harm in getting the blood work done. If you decide to do this, make sure your doctor orders the full panel, and not just one or two if the tests. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. -
ARCHIVED Cheetos - Ugh, Anyone Else Have A Problem With These?
cruelshoes replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Open Original Shared Linkto the Frito Lay list of products that do not contain gluten. They do not claim to test them for gluten, nor do they use the term "gluten free." Lines are washed between batches, and each person would need to make their own decision on whether or not they are comforable with that. I have read accounts of Frito Lay products... -
ARCHIVED 18 Days Gluten Free - Too Late For Antibody Blood Test?
cruelshoes replied to beingmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It can take quite a while for bloodwork results to drop (months or longer in some people). You may get positive results with only 18 days gluten-free. But the bloodwork is only the first step in the diagnosis process. If the bloodwork is positive (and often if it isn't) your GI will want to order an endoscopy. Changes to the villi have been shown to occur... -
ARCHIVED Us Produced Malto Dextrin Is No Longer Safe
cruelshoes replied to Oonagh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten is the protein element of the wheat. If we break down the chemical structure of glucose syrup, it does not contain protein. "Open Original Shared Link" Shelley Case, author. Wheat starch is another animal entirely. It is much less processed than maltodextrin or glucose syrup. I have no doubt that many people react to that. I... -
ARCHIVED Us Produced Malto Dextrin Is No Longer Safe
cruelshoes replied to Oonagh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am glad you are feeling better. The list of foods to avoid on Open Original Shared Linkis riddled with errors. Some examples include distilled vinegar (distillation removes any gluten), andpotato chips (seasonings can contain gluten, but not always). Their forum is chock full of really nasty porn, too - I think I need to go wash my brain... -

ARCHIVED Us Produced Malto Dextrin Is No Longer Safe
cruelshoes replied to Oonagh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin is gluten free. If maltodextrin is from a wheat source, it must be declared by law. Even if it is original sourced from wheat, maltodextrin is so highly procesed it is a gluten free ingredient. Open Original Shared Link Hope you feel better. -

ARCHIVED Gold Fish And Teddy Grahams
cruelshoes replied to mom2twoangels's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The cheesy quinoa crackers from Gluten Free Gobsmacked are great. I made them with mini cookie cutters, and my kids were scarfing them as fast as I could make them. I do not care for quinoa flour, so I used the sorghum/amaranth blend as suggested in the recipe. The picture alone will make you want to make these. Open Original Shared Link Edited... -
ARCHIVED Spokane Wa/coeur D'alene Id Restaurant Suggestions?
cruelshoes replied to Michelle-Idaho's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We were in Coeur d' Alene last week, and had a great experience at the Red Robin there. We went at a not very busy time (2:00 or so). When we were seated, I told the waiter that my son and I needed a gluten free meal. He smiled and let me know that he would go print the menu for me. He also informed me (without prompting) that the fries were prepared in... -
ARCHIVED Hard-boiling Eggs
cruelshoes replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We have 9 chickens, so I have probably boiled more than my fair share of eggs. A recent issue of Backyard Poultry magazine had an article about hardcooking eggs. this method works great for me. Here is a link: Open Original Shared Link -

ARCHIVED Re-testing?
cruelshoes replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link Your family doctor may be willing to run the bloodwork for you, but will likely be unable to interpret it. You will probably want to see your GI doctor for your followup. Now that I have been on the diet a few years, and know how to interpret my own bloodwork, I just request the labs yearly without making an appointment... -

ARCHIVED Ut Valley Gig Mtg - Did Anyone Go?
cruelshoes replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks for posting the information on a gluten-free year's supply. I am working hard to build my food storage back up since being diagnosed 3.5 years ago. It was so much easier when I could just have a bunch of buckets of wheat! -

The former leader of our support group, a Naturopath, knows Dr. Fine personally. Dr. Fine has eaten dinner at his house. I asked him if he had ever spoken to Dr. Fine about why he has not published his results for peer review, he said yes. Well why not, was my next question? The answer to the question was....wait for it......"He just doesn't." That...
