ARCHIVED How Does Gluten Free Food Taste?
cruelshoes replied to Live2BWell's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's just like gluten food - you are going to find brands and varieties that you really like, and those that you do not. Yellow cake mix for example. The Arrowhead Mills yellow cake mix tastes like crap. Complete and total, sandcastle crap. However, the yellow cake mixes from Pamela's or Really Great Foods taste delicious. The premade breads from Ener... -

ARCHIVED Taking Communion At New Church And Dh
cruelshoes replied to brizzo's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Theological discussions aside, the external manifestation of symptoms is not a good gauge for internal reaction. The effects of gluten are often cumulative, and it may be that you have not yet reached the tipping point to begin having reactions you can feel. Good luck to you, whatever choice your faith leads you to make. -
ARCHIVED Saw The Gi Doc Today
cruelshoes replied to Live2BWell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A sigmoidoscopy (in the back door) is not a test for celiac. If you are looking for villi damage, the test you want to ask for is an endoscopy (in the front door). I have had several sigmoidoscopies. While it wasn't the most fun I have ever had in my life, it wasn't the most horrible exam I have ever had. -
What goes around comes around. I have a sneaking suspicion the universe has a way with catching up with people like this. I'm glad you are rid of her. You know that expression about when you break up with someone? Looking good is the best revenge. In your case, it's feeling good that's the best revenge.

ARCHIVED Deciding Not To Pass The Gene?
cruelshoes replied to WhimsiKay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My son with celiac is one of the most delightful kids you will ever meet (all 3 of my kids are great, but he is a gem). His dietary restrictions make him uniquely compassionate to struggles that other people have. He really cares about making sure everyone feels included and is treated the same. Celiac has brought so many good things into our lives. We... -
I gave up gluten the day of my diagnosis and have never looked back (3 years next month). I never want to return to feeling like that again. No gluten cookie or slice of pizza is worth it, especially since I can make something as good or better myself. I don't really miss the food all that much, but occasionally get bummed out that I have to do so much...

ARCHIVED Confused About Celiac Disease
cruelshoes replied to Lise's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Open Original Shared Link There is an IgG version of both the Anti-tissue Transglutaminase Antibody (tTG), IgA and Anti-endomysial (EMA). The Antigliadin IgG has largely fallen out of favor because it is not specific to celiac. Many other things besides celiac cause the AGA IgG to be elevated, so it is less of a helpful tool for diagnosis. It is still... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Boxed Chocolates And Truffles?
cruelshoes replied to munchkinette's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last time I checked on See's the only chocolate that contained gluten was a malt truffle, but they don't sell that one at our store. You also don't need to worry about the vinegar in the lollypops. Grain based vinegar is rendered gluten-free by the distillation process. They used to dust their lollypops with wheat flour, but they don't do that anymore... -
ARCHIVED First Try At Bob's Potato Quick Bread
cruelshoes replied to home-based-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is Open Original Shared Link? A couple things could be at play here. Was your buttermilk old? This recipe needs the acidity of the buttermilk to activate the baking powder. You used potato starch, not potato flour, right? (OK - I'm grasping at straws on that last one.) -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Waffles
cruelshoes replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Trader Joe's has gluten-free waffles and they are delicious. My kids love both the plain and the banana. Kinikinnick also sells waffles, but I haven't tried them. They get rave reviews from others, though. -
ARCHIVED Any Good Books Lately?
cruelshoes replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
More books! Tell me more! I don't have time to read, but I absolutely devour audiobooks. I love to hear about what other people are reading so I can got new ideas about what to try next. Here is what I have "read" in the last few months. I spend a lot of time in the car/bus on my commute. The Tipping Point (for my bookgroup - loved it. Very thought... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free A Cruel Joke On Me?!
cruelshoes replied to Cath724's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is not uncommon to get worse before you get better. There can be a detox effect in a lot of people. Also, gluten has an opiate effect in the brain, and it can definitely cause withdrawl symptoms. Unfortunately, too, many find that their reactions to gluten get stronger the longer they are gluten free. I am one of those. Before I was DX, I would not... -

P&G has been giving out that same canned response for years. Open Original Shared Link to a discussion from early 2006. They may have been pulling the same crap for even longer than that. ARCHIVED Should I Get More Blood Tests?
cruelshoes replied to Cath724's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The celiac panel consists of several tests. Your total IgA score is one of them. It measures your body's ability to produce IgA antibodies. A complete Celiac Blood Panel: Antigliadin IgA and IgG Anti-tissue Transglutaminase Antibody (tTG), IgA and IgG Anti-endomysial (EMA) IgA and IgG Total serum IgA The genetic tests may or may not be a... -

Hillshire Farms Kielbasa
cruelshoes replied to IdGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hillshire farms is owned by Sara Lee. They have a very good labeling policy. If there is wheat, barley, rye or oats in a product, it is clearly marked on the label. They do not hide it in natural flavors or anything like that. The label off of the product will be the best guide on whether the product is gluten-free or not (formulations change all the... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Holiday Cookin/baking?
cruelshoes replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are at great risk of glutening yourself cooking with gluten flour. That stuff gets everywhere. We do not allow gluten of any kind in our house, but especially not flour. My feeling on the matter is that I will not cook or bake something that I cannot eat. Period, end of story. If my family wants cookies, they are gluten-free. If they want rolls... -

When I use our work microwave, I put a paper towel below and over the top of my food. They both go promptly in the trash when I am done. I sort of reach in between them and slide my food out so none of the detritus from the microwave contaminates anything. I have my own toaster at my desk that I keep locked up. It is labeled with my name and a skull and...

ARCHIVED Blood Tests Results
cruelshoes replied to Billygean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Each lab has a different set of reference ranges. The lab that ran my bloodwork might use a much different scale than yours does. See if your doctor will provide you with a paper copy of the lab report. That should give you the information you need on the high and low ranges. Without that, it's really hard to tell what then numbers mean. -
ARCHIVED My Computer Screen Is Too Small
cruelshoes replied to imsohungry's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
On my work PC, which is set to 1280x1024 with dual monitors, I can see the whole page just fine. On my 1024x768 single monitor at home, I just slide the page over so I can't see the ads on either side but can see the post in the middle. I guess that just means more time at work and less on my own time.
