  1. The only thing I would worry about is eating at the buffets. Pretty much any dietary issue can be easily handled in the dining room, but you can't control cross contamination and such at the buffets. Also, things may be difficult on shore. I would probably take a box of packaged gluten-free bars (Lara bars, or similar) so you're sure to have something...
  2. Wow, I never knew what "normal" was supposed to be. Mine has always been 80 or 90 over about 50. The nurses always end up taking it a couple of times to make sure they read it right... The only time anyone ever told me that it was dangerously low was one time when it was 80/48. But, when I told them that that was pretty close to normal for me, they were...
  3. I had a similar situation with my symptoms. My severe symptoms (big D, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, etc) started shortly after I became pregnant with my 1st child. Symptoms continued through the pregnancy and for another almost 3 years while I was on Depo-Provera. My symptoms pretty much disappeared when I stopped the Depo. Over the last couple of years...

    ARCHIVED Good News

I am SOOOO happy for you! You totally deserve to have a friend, especially one who is experienced with the diet.
  5. Originally I was going to make bagels. The recipe for bagels was right on the bag, and I was excited. Then I noticed the "add-ins" for flavored breads could also be used for bagels. One was cinnamon and sugar, but I was out of sugar. But, I had brown sugar and decided to try that instead. When I tried to "fold-in" the cinnamon and brown sugar, the dough...
  6. I eliminated all personal care items with gluten simply because, as a society, we don't wash our hands enough. If it can get on your hands, it can (and probably will) end up in your mouth eventually. I know I'm not gonna go licking my eyeshadow, or drinking my hair spray, but I still use gluten-free just to be sure.
  7. Those are all things that a person supposedly has direct control over. For instance, an employer cannot charge you more for your insurance if you're diabetic... but they can (in some cases) charge more if you consistently end up in the hospital because you don't control it. Same with high blood pressure or cholesterol. The easiest one is smoking, because...
  8. The fish oil is for DHA, which some (but not all) prenatals have. Mine does not, so I take it separate. Others do, and my doc said that if it's already in your prenatal, you shouldn't take extra... check w/ your doc.
  9. I've been gluten free for almost 6 weeks now, and last night I had my first bowel movement that was solid AND sank! They have been mostly solid for a couple of weeks, but all have been floaters until now. I am assuming that this means that I am probably absorbing most (if not all) of the nutrients and stuff I'm eating... right? YEAH!!!
  10. Wow... that sucks. Are casinos exempt from the "no smoking in public places" laws? Can you find work in a smoke-free casino (if they exist)? Can you only work in a casino, or could you do your job somewhere else? I would guess that if you are being careful about everything else, then the cigarette smoke could definitely be the problem. Your health...
  11. It wasn't me either... my offer for Christmas still stands... no matter what!
  12. It's fall? Really? I hadn't noticed... We moved from Maryland to Texas last summer and I really miss the leaves changing colors Here... well, we're only getting into the low/mid 90's during the day, and the nights are downright cool... 73 last night! And, we only had to mow the lawn once last week!
  13. A lot of companies are starting to use the FDA CODEX standards that say that a Gluten-Free label may be applied to anything that has less than 20ppm gluten. So, even if the oats are contaminated, the overall gluten level in the chips is less than 20ppm. I am convinced that the new labeling is actually going to make it harder for celiacs to shop, rather...
  14. Weird... it's from the town where I grew up... I didn't think anything good came out of that town!
  15. Since you are doing this for friends, I would explain to them that you cannot continue working there due to your health problems. Also, do you enforce a no eating rule on your bus? You could very easily be glutened by the little brats (uhh... I mean adorable little children ) who ride your bus if they eat on the bus.
  16. Of course, if you don't want to keep eating gluten just for a test, a LOT of us are self-diagnosed. I figured out on my own what I thought the problem was and eliminated gluten from my diet (and personal care items). After about 3 days, the big D went away. Another week or so and most of the painful gas and bloating went away. I've been gluten free for...
  17. The only people I know of who have had problems with getting health insurance at normal rates due to health conditions are those who cannot get group insurance for whatever reason, usually self-employed. I also know someone who was self-employed (private insurance) and recently went to work for a corporation JUST to get group health insurance when the spouse...

    ARCHIVED No More D

I have the same problem... although after 5 weeks gluten-free, it is getting better. I now go 2-3 times a week. I don't know if that's normal or not, but I'm not in pain like I was when I was going once a week. I personally think that after having d for so long our colons have "forgotten" how to produce a normal bowel movement. Our bodies get so used...
  19. I am also pregnant, and pretty sure that I'm celiac. I have never been tested, but have had a great response to the gluten-free diet, so I'm convinced. It is very important to stay gluten-free throughout your pregnancy, due to the risk of miscarriage and birth defects, like you mentioned. You should notice a definate improvement within a few weeks...
  20. I just re-read your post and realized that you are asking for a diet to follow during recovery AFTER you've been glutened or soyed. I was thinking that you were looking for what you should eat while you're travelling. I would still focus on prevention when possible, but the diet I listed in my previous post would probably also be good for recovery. Also...
  21. For me it's plain white or brown rice, plain baked potatos, plain chicken or turkey, and plain steamed veggies. By plain, I mean no seasonings, marinades, or sauces (all potential gluten sources). I also eat a lot of apples, bananas, and grapes, although fruit causes problems for some people. Raw veggies make me gassy and bloated, so salads (which work...
  22. A lot of people feel like they "need" that official diagnosis, because otherwise they are just doing this crazy fad diet that's difficult, expensive... it makes them feel less crazy when they are doing what the doctor told them to do... Also, a lot of prescription medications have gluten in them. It is usually possible to find gluten-free alternatives...
  23. Chances are, once you truly go 100% gluten free, you'll feel healthy enough that you won't WANT to cheat! For most people, once you're gluten free, the reactions get worse! I don't know what to say about the meds... I'm generally against meds unless they are absolutely necessary, but that's me. You know your body the best.
  24. Oh yeah... before celiac I used to dip chocolate covered pretzels in the peanut butter! YUMMMMMMY!
  25. Increasing your protein (basically meat if you're dairy free) may help, but not always. It looks like you're doing the "whole foods" approach, which is generally the safest way to go while you're healing. But, sometimes you just need something else. I have made corn bread just using basic ingredients found at any grocery store and it does seem to fill...
