  1. I have always had worse symptoms when my hormones were fluctuating. I have never been 100% gluten free while menstruating (I'm gluten free now, but I'm pregnant) so I can't say if I ever felt glutened when I knew I hadn't been. Is there any chance that you got cross contaminated? Also, a lot of people don't react on the day that they consumed gluten,...
  2. Send her to Baltimore! The University of Maryland has a Open Original Shared Link. I've never been there, but at least she won't have to go through months (or years) of docs who "don't like to dx celiac because the diet is too hard". They know that the diet is hard, but being sick is harder! If she can't/won't drive to Baltimore (it's only about an hour...
  3. Does anyone know if they are casein free as well? I know my husband will insist on handing out chocolate, but I want to provide an "allergic-kid friendly" selection as well. The allergens I want to avoid are: dairy, gluten, peanuts, and tree nuts. Are there any other common kid allergens that I should add to my list? I'm thinking the selection will...
  4. I know this has been discussed before... but, I still think that a "safe" level of gluten is laughable. The only items that should get the Gluten-free labeling are those that only contain ingredients that are naturally gluten-free AND are processed on dedicated gluten-free equipment. Maybe a second label (Very Low Gluten?) could be adopted for items that...
  5. My hubby brought up an interesting related question the other day... what about gluten-free stuffing? Is there a gluten-free bread that is similar enough in texture to "real" bread that it would do okay as stuffing? At my in-laws (where we do Thanksgiving every year) we usually do some in-the-bird stuffing, and then a huge pan of "other" stuffing. His...
  6. When you do venture back out to a restaurant, make sure you tell the server that the MUST tell the cook that you have food allergies and your food has to be cooked separately. Even if you are ordering something "safe", they could plop your corn tortilla right on the spot where a flour tortilla was, and you end up sick. Actually, I usually say "severe...
  7. Gotta ask... what are they?
  8. Tell us what country you're in, I'm sure there is someone on this board who lives in the same country or at least has traveled there. At this point, you will probably test negative for celiac, so you may never get your "official" diagnosis. This is only really a problem if you end up having family/friends who doubt you. For instance, my husband wants...

    ARCHIVED My Diagnosis

Grrrr... I hate when docs "diagnose" IBS. It is a symptom, not a disease! I hope that your gastro is one of the good ones who will actually listen to you. Since you've got two weeks, start a food journal and a record of your symptoms now. It may help you convince your doc, especially if you try to stay away from the other foods that they commonly tell...
  10. DON'T GIVE UP!!! And, don't think that you have to start a diet at the beginning of the week. I've actually find it to be easier to get started on a day OTHER than Monday! So, pretend that the chocolate breakfast never happened, and start over. Also, you may want to consider starting your day with some protein. A single banana is pure carbs and pretty...
  11. So, everything in the store is gluten-free? I'll be in "the burgh" for Thanksgiving, and I was worried about having MIL go shopping for me before I get there. I may send her there to pick up a few things. I know it's 2 months away, but this is going to be my first attempt to live off the food from someone else's kitchen since going 100% gluten free... I...
  12. I went to the Red Robin on Katy Freeway in Houston on Saturday. I asked for a list of the gluten-free items, and they looked at me like I was from another planet. So, I asked for the manager. I asked if they have a dedicated fryer, she said yes. I asked about other menu items, and she started to look confused. I just ordered the lettuce wrapped protein...
  13. So far I have not told anyone, "Hey, removing gluten from your diet may help with X", but I've thought long and hard about it for my very good friend. She has Crohn's Disease and, as a result, has had years of digestive issues. She knows all about my recent problems and realization that I am gluten intolerant, and she has actually said that my symptoms...
  14. If you allow your child to watch television, can you set her TV time to be when the dogs eat? That (or something else that will definitely keep your child's attention for at least 20 minutes) would give the dogs time to eat (presumably in a different room than the TV). When the dogs are done, remove the bowls and allow the child to finish the show or activity...
  15. Oh my god! I just read on another posting that chronic sinusitis is linked with celiac! I had NO idea! My daughter has had chronic sinusitis for almost a year now. It started last October. From October thru May she was on antibiotics on and off. They would do a head CT, see that her sinuses were filled and put her on a 3 week course of antibiotics. After...
  16. Sure we haven't been formally diagnosed... because we can't find doctors willing to make the correct diagnosis! If they stopped handing out a "diagnosis" of IBS and saying "everyone get diarrhea/constipation, just deal with it", maybe we'd stop making this stuff up! And I love how food intolerances are not as severe as food allergies... no, I won't go into...
  17. Some of this was posted as part of another question, so if some of it sounds familiar, you probably already read part of it (sorry). I am self-diagnosed as celiac or gluten-intolerant (I don't care which, because the cure is the same). I have never had a single test for celiac, because my doc "diagnosed" me with IBS and said "Deal with it, we all have occassional...
  18. Her diet seems pretty heavy on wheat-replacements (carbs), and pretty light on protien and fat. A lot of people have found that even gluten-free grains (including corn) are hard on their intestines for the first couple of months of being gluten-free. I totally understand how difficult lunch at school is, but will she eat deli meat, or cold chicken? A couple...
  19. Unfortunately, I've had some pretty serious money problems in the past, which my husband bailed me out of many times. I work, but I know that I cannot handle money. Both of our paychecks are direct deposited into our joint checking account. We have 2 credit card accounts (both accounts "officially" in his name, because I can't qualify for a card with a...
  20. I am self-diagnosed as celiac or gluten-intolerant (I don't care which, because the cure is the same). I have never had a single test for celiac, because my doc "diagnosed" me with IBS and said "Deal with it, we all have occassional diarrhea". My dd is 6yrs old and LOVES bread (and pizza, and cake, and cookies, but mostly bread). I want to have...
  21. My symptoms are TOTALLY related to my hormones. In fact, I posted not too long ago about only being symptomatic while pregnant. Now that I'm gluten-free, I've noticed other "symptoms" that have disappeared that I never associated with gluten. I have never been tested or scoped. I am entirely self-diagnosed based on dietary response. My husband...
  22. maryjoali - CONGRATS!!! I think sometimes SOME doctors are so eager to be helpful that they end up giving bad advice by mistake, especially if there is more than one issue they have to deal with. The only reason I got decent info at the hospital was that I had a great nurse. I knew I was going to have to have an X-ray so I made sure that I told everybody...
  23. My OB said I could eat deli meat, but only after heating it until it steams (like you would a hot dog). That just seems wrong to me, so I haven't tried it. My new favorite lunch (for the last couple of weeks) has been to make a wrap with whatever leftovers we've got in the frig. If I know I'll be near a microwave at lunchtime, I'll mix meat, rice,...
  24. I'm confused. I just looked at Arby's allergen menu. Under "Sides and Sidekickers" the Southwest Eggrolls are listed as having Wheat, but not gluten. I thought that anything with wheat had to have gluten? Just about everything else (except Spicy Cajun Tartar Sauce) has gluten checked if Wheat is checked. I figure it's probably just a typo...
  25. That's just weird! But kinda cool if it works! I just Googled "short pinky finger" and found this interesting tidbit on a site about palmistry: "A very short pinky finger (the kind that only reaches half way through the middle phalanx of the ring finger) is indicative of someone frustrated, unable to express their talents and skills." Hehehe... so we...
