ARCHIVED The Extent Of This Is Mind-boggling ...
HouseKat replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'd love to get the name of the speaker/researcher that your doc saw. I was looking around to see if I could find him, and found this about celiac and thyroid disease: Open Original Shared Link Kate -
ARCHIVED Could Depression/anxiety Issues Be Due To Gluten?
HouseKat replied to EmilyH's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Right before I found out that my aunt had celiac and I decided to go gluten-free I was reading The second brain : the scientific basis of gut instinct and a groundbreaking new understanding of stomach and bowel disorders by Michael Gershon. Finding out from that book that my neurological symptoms might be related to my GI symptoms made me all the more determined... -
It's not my sister who needs the convincing, it's the doctors. I asked every doctor I had for 15 years if I might have celiac and every one of them blew me off and refused to do a simple test. (I was so giddy when the GI doc finally wrote out the orders for my celiac blood tests that I took a picture of the paper.) The doctor will have a harder time dismissing...

Yes, even if the docs are not convinced, I am. I'm on my third day gluten-free again and I feel great. I realized today that what's really driving me to get an official diagnosis is my nieces. I know that if I have an official diagnosis it will make it easier for my sister to convince a doc to test her girls. I'm pretty sure that her nine y.o. has it...

ARCHIVED Podcast On Celiac Disease And Possible Pill
HouseKat replied to hlm34's topic in Publications & Publicity
Speaking of podcasts, would there be any interest in a podcast by and for Celiacs? If so, what kinds of things would you like to hear on the podcast? Kate -
Well, I lasted four days then had some of the worst Celiac diarrhea I've ever experienced for eleven hours last night. Called the doc this morning, he had me come in for the blood draw and I'm gluten-free again. Now to wait for the results. Kate

I'm 5'5", but I think that if not for Celiac I would have been closer to my sister's height of 5'11". I was always one of the tallest girls in my class until my growth seemed to stall around age 11, about the same time I started having Celiac symptoms. Kate

ARCHIVED I've Decided To Start A Gluten Elimination Diet Today
HouseKat replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Joyous, Are you planning on getting tested for Celiac at some point? If so, I'd recommend doing that first. I went gluten-free on my own and after 11 weeks my doctor sent me to the GI doc who asked me to go back on gluten so he could do the blood tests. I agreed to eat gluten for two weeks...I lasted four days. During those four days, all of... -
So, I saw the GI doc this afternoon. He realizes that me being gluten-free for weeks now makes the endoscopy less certain so he doesn't want to go that route. While he knows more about Celiac than my PCP, he's no expert. Essentially, we struck a deal: he wants me to eat gluten for the next two weeks so he can run the blood panel on me, I agreed with the...

ARCHIVED Symptoms Improved After Going On Atkins?
HouseKat replied to TDMB's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
TDMB, I also saw a big improvement in my health when I was on Atkins a few years ago, which led me to ask my then PCP about Celiac disease, but he dismissed it because I was overweight. (I've been asking doctors about Celiac since I first read about it over 15 years ago as part of my neverending quest to figure out WTF is wrong with my body.) If I had... -
I agree with you 100%. If they can send me to a dietician who knows something about Celiac and gluten-free diets, I would like to go, because I'm sure there's room for improvement in my current diet, but if the dietician isn't knowledgable about these issues, I'm not going to waste my money, even if it is only a $10 co-pay. And if they try to send me to...

ARCHIVED Overweight Child And Celiac?
HouseKat replied to landkwold's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here are some articles mentioning overweight celiacs, I think one of them is the one Nora mentioned: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Kate -
He says that if I do have celiac he wants me to see a dietician, and for that to be covered by insurance he has to be 100% certain of the diagnosis. When I talk to the GI doc if he talks sense and says that there's no point in doing an endoscopy now that I'm gluten-free, that's fine with me. If he acts like it doesn't matter one bit that I'm gluten-free...

So, I had a doctor appointment yesterday morning with my primary care doc. (I went gluten-free September 2nd and I hadn't been able to get in to see him since then.) I told him about finding out that my aunt was diagnosed as celiac and her suggesting that I try the diet. I told him about how many of my various symptoms had gone away and that I've stopped...

HouseKat replied to jennavive00's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had LASIK in June 2006, before I knew that I had Celiac, and I had no problems or complications at all. Kate -
ARCHIVED Fort Wayne Support?
HouseKat replied to silly celiac's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't know of a Ft Wayne group, but you might check out the Indianapolis Google group and see if there's anyone from your area on there. I live hours away from Indy, but joined the Indy group because I go there often on business, so I'm always looking for tips on places to eat and shop there. Kate -
When I had a colonoscopy earlier this summer they asked me to drink TWO of those 64 oz. Gatorade bottles mixed with the Miralax. Just after I started on the second bottle, I started vomiting and couldn't hold any more down. When I arrived for my procedure, the nurse asked if I had drank all of the prep and I had to tell her that no, I didn't because of...

I bought a rice steamer that I can also use to steam meat and veggies in and it can also be used as a crock pot. Best thing I've bought so far. Kate

Cathy, From what I've read here and elsewhere, getting the official diagnosis can be a double-edged sword. If you and your kids are officially diagnosed, in the future it will be considered a pre-existing condition and can cause you problems with future medical insurance. If your kids do not get an official diagnosis, it may be difficult - if not impossible...

ARCHIVED As Silly As This Sounds.....
HouseKat replied to Motorboater's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Pam, I live in southern Indiana. In addition to the usual Bond-Aid/Acid-Free Primer combo, the new nail tech used Creatives' Retention liquid, which has their Acid-Free Primer in it. One week later, none of my fills have lifted. Hooray! Kate -
ARCHIVED Gross Topic - Poop
HouseKat replied to jewi0008's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, yes, I'm very familar with that. I remembering watching the South Park episode where Cartman had flames shooting out of his rear and thinking, "I've felt like that before..." Kate -
ARCHIVED New Here And Searching For Answers
HouseKat replied to Nyxie63's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Does that mean he only took two samples, or he biopsied you on two separate occasions? If he only took two samples, that's not anywhere near enough. In Dr. Green's latest article in the New England Journal of Medicine (see Publicity thread) it states, "at least four to six endoscopic-biopsy specimens should be obtained". Kate -
ARCHIVED Greetings
HouseKat replied to Zeno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This runs contrary to everything that I have read and heard about how to eat pre-endoscopy. For instance, here's what it says in Dr. Green's book: Kate -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Candy Bars
HouseKat replied to Kathy'sUnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm looking at a pack that I bought two days ago, and there isn't anything on there about "wheat producing equipment", but maybe my pack might have the older label? Here's their number if anyone wants to call and check: 1-800-468-1714 (9-4 ET M-F). Kate -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Candy Bars
HouseKat replied to Kathy'sUnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Careful on the Reese Cups though, the regular large size ones are gluten-free, but the individually wrapped mini cups are not. (I got that info from my boss who is a vegetarian and very aware of food ingredients, as well as being a "Reese Cup connaisseur"!) Kate
