Mccormick Taco Seasoning?
bakingbarb replied to newceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
a really good company to buy spices and blends from is The Spice House If they were to use flour they list it. Most companies that mix up spices like this don't use flour as a filler. -
OH OH OH I made the bread I made the bread Ok I admit it I tweaked with the recipe a bit and kinda combined it with another books recipe. I had a flour mixed up from a book but the recipes were similar so I played. The basics I left alone, how much flour etc but I used both sugar and honey. Just little things like that. So it tastes great, looks great...

ARCHIVED Would You Order This Way?
bakingbarb posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So all of this talk of baking and how hard it is to get good gluten-free baked yummies got me to thinking... I knew a guy in New York that baked the best breads, he made them to order and shipped them overnight. Why can't this be done with gluten-free goodies? I know absolutely nothing about shipping food. We all know that overnight shipping is costly... -
ARCHIVED Starbucks Gluten Free
bakingbarb replied to HannahHannah's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do any of you have a love hate thing for Starbucks? I do for the fact is the coffee isn't good coffee and they take over the land. Do you know they target areas where smaller cafes/coffee houses are doing good and move in the neighborhood. Heck if you want to open a cafe, beware the starbucks. My fav line is friends don't let friends drink starbucks... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Baking Tips
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ya know I used to know a guy in New York that baked breads out of his kitchen and sold them mailorder. He only baked it when you ordered it. I wonder if that could be done on a small scale with gluten-free? I wonder if people would buy from it? -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Baking Tips
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Do you change the recipe at all? Do you have to add more liquid, take away some of the flour? This is acutally a very good tip. I used to make the pudding cookie recipe and it does add moisture and flavor. -
Oh and you said rolling pins. Holy heck I never thought of those. But one is a family passed down for generations, I don't use it anymore it is on stash. One is marble and can be washed quite well and taken apart, a gift from my oldest son. I will try to clean it with the understanding that it might not work and I might not be able to use it again. But since...

Yes I have this pastry it is my signature item. SIGH it was perfect I will eventually find out if I can bake anything like it. The bread I made so far was ugh so I turned it into bread crumbs. Thank you for telling me how you handled things, when you were ready. It is overwhelming at first so really one thing at a time. I saw how one person said they...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Baking Tips
bakingbarb replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Great tips everybody. I think what I am going to try soon is chocolate chip cookies but I will use the recipe from Rose's Christmas cookies. Actually it is like a chunky cookie oh crud it calls for granola. Well so far I have been able to tolerate small amounts of oats and I love oats so that will be in there. Plus ccc's are not something I binge on... -
Ok so I am thinking that to bake well this way we need all the tips and hints we can get. Can the flour mixes in one cookbook be sub'd for the mix in another book? I have 3 books and they all have a diff mix. So lets say I want to make this cookie recipe from book A but I made the all purpose flour mix from book B - can I sub one for the other? ...

ARCHIVED 25 gluten-free Recipes That Even Gluten Eaters Will Like
bakingbarb replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
These all sound wonderful. You put a lot of time into this, thank you so much. -
Ya know I needed to see this. There have been some very rough points in my life and this doesn't even come close to them. Those were depressing and suicide inducing moments (obviously I am still here but the thoughts were there). There are other things in my life that cause me more grief (ex!) then the gluten ever could. I also need to remember that because...

You guys/gals are the best. I was ranting really and worried that I would make someone upset. I guess this whole thing I just am having a much harder time dealing then I thought I would. I scrubbed my pots with steel wool, my cast iron I cleaned (salt, oil, burning sorta, it kills it all and keeps it seasoned). I guess I pretty much know...

ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Gluten Cravings?
bakingbarb replied to mythreesuns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
May I suggest some laughter. Not being flip but it is the only thing that helps me. I was complaining about something and the response just made me lol and I got over being upset real fast. I know it is very hard. My daughter eats very little in the variety dept and is being tested for the gluten soon so last night I bought her the kind of pizza she likes... -
Ya know what, you made me lol. What better advice is there.

Of course this is still very new for me and I still struggle with the whole thing and it's impact on my life. I have adjusted to thinking before I eat anything and my baking is still minimal. My name is bakingbarb and this isn't helping any. I am angry at life for this one, sorta. I feel better and I never ever forget that. But here is the thing and it...

That is too general a statement. She should have backed it up with facts saying why. My daughter has never been able to sleep without it. She has been taking it off and on but mostly on for about 8 years now. She cannot get to sleep or sleep peacefully with out. Some people are deficent, their bodies are supposed to produce it and they don't. So far it...

ARCHIVED How To Make Liver
bakingbarb replied to confusedks's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My daughter and myself have been so highly anemic in the past that after some research we take this Open Original Shared Link It is made from liver and is highly absorbable. Sorry but I don't think you can hide the taste of liver. It is one of my fav foods but never helped my iron levels because even though I love it you can't pay me to eat it everyday... -

ARCHIVED Coconut Flour A Godsend
bakingbarb replied to draeko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have been on a baking forum for years and we talk about this legal sharing of recipes for years. Some people feel it is no different if you gave the cookbook to a friend to copy from, others feel you should be made to go buy the book. The people that work for the company that sponsors the forum has published cookbooks and they have no problem with teh sharing... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Hate The Activia Commercials?
bakingbarb replied to cgilsing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When that stuff first came out I didn't know about the Celiac so I tried them even though I knew it wouldn't help. It's marketing but it angers me. Ya just like the weight loss pills (read the small print the big D is on the way). -
ARCHIVED Coconut Flour A Godsend
bakingbarb replied to draeko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hmmm, can you give examples of where one would use this at? I saw it at the store the other day but didn't know where I would use it. I can imagine it covering up the taste of some of the other flours, yes no? TIA -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Relative.....
bakingbarb replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Very intresting how people respond. I think some people just don't get it. Wonder what else they just don't get. Actully my other half forgets all the time. I am not hurt by it, he is so good to me and I know he doesn't do to be mean. I mentioned that last night to him and his buddy says "you don't know men very well do you." He said they forget stuff literaly...
