    ARCHIVED Jamaica

My daughter and her fiance are planning a destination wedding to Jamaica next year. She and I are both Celiac and I am wondering if anyone has traveled there and what were your experiences with a gluten free diet. I would welcome any advice you care to give....
  2. Can someone please clarify what gluten free actually means? I understand the 'parts per million' stuff but I have had problems lately buying nutrition bars that are in the gluten free section at my health food store and are marked on the wrapper as being gluten free but also carry the disclaimer that they are produced in a factory that also processes products...
  3. Wal-mart is one of the few stores where I feel comfortable shopping because of their labeling policies where gluten is concerned. I am sure that this is a dumb question, but have you tried any other types of pepper and had a reaction? Could it be the pepper itself? Does anyone here know if it is possible to be sensitive to or to develop a sensitivity...
  4. Thanks so much for the info. I am from the midwest and my husband and I are planning one of our 'dream' vacations to DC. We will definitely check Legal Seafoods out. Another national (at least I think it is) is Bonefish Grill and they have an amazing gluten-free menu. Their flourless chocolate cake is the stuff dreams are made of.
  5. Jeez! That's really interesting and disturbing. After reacting to fresh apples and pears with terrible stomach pain and gluten-like symptoms, I figured I was simply intolerant to the fruit themselves and gave up on eating it. Was confused as to why I could eat the canned fruit, applesauce or things with those fruits cooked into them without any problem...
  6. I would have to agree. Honestly, I don't feel that there is ANY fast food restaurant that could be considered safe. When you consider that the median age for most of those employees is maybe 15-18 years old, how could you trust that they would be conscientious enough to follow a 'gluten-free' protocol, even if there was one in place. Unless they actually...
  7. Count me out! I love the double-speak in their description of the pill 'Symptom free'. Do you think any of the people responsible for developing this medication would go out on a limb and say that the pill would ACTUALLY prevent damage to the intestines? Probably not. All of us here know only too well that the term 'symptom free' does not mean that...
  8. Oh how I envy you people. My family and I visited Boston about 1 1/2 years ago over the week of the 4th of July and absolutely fell in love with your city. I would love to come back. We stayed for 8 days and it was not nearly enough time. We visited before I was diagnosed so I was able to experience all of the wonderful foods you have to offer. One of...
  9. I'm not familiar enough with the other flours to know what works as a substitution for corn, tapioca or potato. Personally I like those three flours for most of the things I make because there isn't the same after taste as there are with other flours. I wonder if you could replace one of them with almond meal because that would ad more fiber but I'm not...
  10. For pasta, I really like the Glutano Tagliatelle 'egg' noodles. They are so good and the texture is so wonderful that you think you are eating the real deal. Served them with dinner last weekend and everyone, without exception, went back for seconds and said they would never have guessed that they were eating non-toxic food. For bread I just discovered...
  11. It really stinks to get glutened. I guess you just have to think of yourself as the sacrificial lamb. Because you got zapped and you were kind enough to point it out so that the restaurant corrected things, someone else will not have to go through what you did. God works for us and THROUGH us. I can remember the smell of Uno's so well. I live in the...
  12. I would have to agree with you, Mamaw. I always appreciate that the restaurants that I have eaten at are at least trying to accommodate us. Also, I have yet to eat at a restaurant that advertises a gluten-free menu that did not also have a disclaimer on that menu stating basically, that while they try, there are no guarantees. I eat a one restaurant rather...
  13. Update: The pain I was having was not responding to the chiropractic adjustments so my chiropractor sent me to my family M.D. for an anti-inflammatory med hoping that once the inflammation was under control, the adjustments would take care of the structural problems. Family m.d., who dx'd me for the celiac disease, would not provide the meds. He did a...
  14. What is DPP-IV and where do you get it? I have had some luck with taking marshmallow root on a daily basis and when I get glutened, I take mega doses of slippery elm, which seems to move the offending stuff through the system and out a bit faster.
  15. Not completely sure but I seem to remember that the cherry flavored liquid and the pills are not safe for us. Also, the liquid would probably go to work a little faster.
  16. I just discovered yesterday that Weight Watcher's yogurt is also gluten free. It has amazing flavors and it also has fiber in it which is a bonus. Walmart also has gluten free yogurt.
  17. Will add my two cents worth. I was also told by my pharmacist, who checked for me, that Lipitor is indeed gluten-free. I have taken it for many years and it causes me no problems. Thanks to those responsible for the heads up on gluten-free pizza crust. I think pizza is probably right up there as one of the things we all miss most here.
  18. I'm so sorry. The wrapper was kind of a flimsy thing so I tossed it in favor of a zip lock that I could 'suck' the air out of with a straw and re-freeze. This seems to help a lot with freshness, but unfortunately, I no longer have the info. It is wonderful bread though and I will definitely be making a return trip for more so hopefully I can get that to...
  19. I use the Hormel 'Jennie-O' brand and have never had a problem. They have an extensive list of gluten free meat products.
  20. I've been glutened twice in the past two weeks and my lowback, (sacrum) and hip hurts so much that I'm wondering if I'll ever walk upright or sit comfortably for more than a few minutes at a time ever again. Eating rice cereal for the next three months just to make sure this doesn't happen again!
  21. Eurika! I do believe I have found a more than passable multi-grain, gluten free, dairy free bread at the health food store. I ventured back this evening for my favorite pasta (glutano tagliatelle). The store can't keep it on the shelves because it sells so fast so I stocked up. I wandered over to the frozen food case where they keep the gluten-free...
  22. Thanks again for the great recipe. It sounds yummy. Actually I did contact the health food store, which is only one in a national small chain. The owner e-mailed me back and was very appreciative. Said that they had taken immediate measures to implement employee training for all food sensitivities and dietary issues. He asked for my address as he said...
  23. Wouldn't it be interesting to know (although you would probably never get any member of the medical field to admit a mis-diagnosis) how many people have had gallbladder surgery, treatment without result for joint pain or low back pain, treatment for IBS, Crohn's or Fibromyalia when in actuality, the person's problems stemmed from Celiac disease? Before we...
  24. Thanks so much for the recipe, Juliebove. It sounds delicious and it would not involve spending all day in the kitchen. I may try it this weekend. The sandwich in the picture almost reminded me of a pita pocket. Now if we could figure out a way to fake rye bread! I am so hungry for a reuben sandwich. Sorry, just drooled on my keyboard!
  25. I was diagnosed a year ago in November. While I did not go through the biopsy testing, I have type 1 diabetes, Raynaud's Phenomenon, Apthous Stomatitis(mouth ulcers) and all of the GI problems that most of you have, anemia and failure to thrive as a child, hip/joint pain, positive dietary response to a gluten-free diet, etc.. I am 49 years old and have...
