HAK1031 replied to imsohungry's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
hahaha if you have onstar, it sends you emails if your car needs maitnence or something I think, but if you don't it's probably just trying to sell it to you -

ARCHIVED Passover - Egg Free & Nut Free
HAK1031 replied to elefky's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My family's in the same boat! I have egg/nut free cousins, plus obviously I'm gluten-free (so's most of passover!). We have macaroons, chocolate dipperd strawberries/dried apricots, fruit, and my aunt makes an amazing EF/NF chocolate cake with potato starch (manischevitz is gluten-free I believe). What else...oh! Crustless cheesecake is good too. *tries... -
I was 10lbs 4 oz and was told I looked like a quarterback (and no, my mom did not have a c-section! according to the ultrasound I was small )

ARCHIVED Wonderful Evening Of Gluten Freedom
HAK1031 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I tried the new heal food store/bakery that opened today, it's great! Unfortunately by the time I got there the baked goods were near cleaned out, but I got some divine chocolate balsamic cookies and a baguette. But the store is great and has almost all of my favorites, plus the woman (a former teacher from my old middle school) and her husband who own it... -
ARCHIVED Greek Yogurt? Yogurt That's Safe?
HAK1031 replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep, Fage's fine. I love it too Even if you get the fat free it's sooo creamy. Try it with a spoonful of honey and some fruit, or preserves. mmmm -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Schools
HAK1031 replied to ryebaby0's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I'm a high school student. But here's an idea of what you can look forward to: 1. Does your child have a formal IEP, or 504 -- and BRIEFLY what accomodations have you asked for Nope, none of the above. No accomadations either. The only time it gets tricky is on trips, where I talk to the teacher in charge and explain that I will bring my own food... -
ARCHIVED Store Or Off Brand List
HAK1031 replied to radgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm, this isn't such a bad idea... Stop and Shop clearly labels gluten. Like, in the allergen atatement it says "Contains: Nuts Eggs Milk Gluten". Also I am OK with store brand rice cakes that are made in a sep. facility- as opposed to quaker. Plus they're oviously cheaper than the lundgerg -
ARCHIVED I Am So Flippin Happy...
HAK1031 replied to sickchick's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
yay!!!!!!!!! That opens up a whole new world of food again for you! I just wouldn't eat it tooooo often, as it can still irritate the guts. sadly i will no longer return to my silk addiction -
Hi and welcome! I'm 16 and a junior so I definitely feel your pain. But it's definitely not worth giving up hope over. Get your GED, enroll in some community college courses when you feel well enough, consider transferring down the road...you can get yourself back on track! Isn't it awful what undiagnosed celiac can do to your life? If I hadn't been diagnose...

ARCHIVED Bakery Opening Up Near Me!
HAK1031 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was talking to my celiac friend today and she mentioned that a gluten-free bakery/health food store was opening up tomorrow 10 minutes away from us!! It's owned by a former teacher at our old middle school (my friend had her, she has celiac) and her husband. It's called Nature's Grocer and is in Vernon, CT if anyone's nearby. I was soo excited! I'll let... -
ARCHIVED Ate 4 Samoas...
HAK1031 replied to blondebombshell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
jealous though I am no, this doesn't necessarily mean anything. when I was challenging gluten originally, I would only be able to go a few days at a time before I'd cave and eat gluten- with little to no reaction- which just confused me more. But once I let myself heal, I now get a big reaction with a teensy bit. So it's a matter of letting the reaction... -
ARCHIVED Hypoglycemia With Celiac
HAK1031 replied to jennyofmany's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I haven't been officially DX'd with hypoglycemia, but I get pretty bad blood sugar drops if I don't eat frequently. I start to get really shaky and feel like I'm going to throw up and pass out. I don't know that I'm full blown hypoglycemic, but I do know that I need to listen to my body. I bring my lunch every day, and there are times when I've eaten it all... -
Hey, I'm one of those teenagers But you know how you can just instinctively tell when you're being understood? It's kind of a gut feeling, which is why it might help to walk in there without actually ordering anything at first, like just go in to explain your needs, so in case you don't feel comfortable, you can just walk out and not have to worry. And...

Make friends with your local Chinese restaurant. I know, you probably think I'm nuts. But I went into mine in the late afternoon on a weekday when there was no one there and talked to the (manager? owner? something of that nature) and explained to him what I could and couldn't have, no soy sauce, clean wok, etc. He was sooo helpful, and totally understanding...

ARCHIVED Glutino Products
HAK1031 replied to stolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bring extra pretzels in my lunches because my friends love them too! And their crackers are the best gluten-free one I've tried, I wouldn't know it was gluten-free but it tastes a little different from normal. -
ARCHIVED Perky O's Vs Glutino Cereal?
HAK1031 replied to stolly's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't really like the glutino cereal, but I could see that a little kid would. It's not hard at all, but it's too sugary for me and has next to no nutritional value. A good gluten-free kids cereal that's better nutrion wise is envirokidz. -
ARCHIVED Question
HAK1031 replied to nikky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
sigh. I have 3 friends that can't have gluten- 2 gluten intolerant, one celiac. One of the gluten intolerant ones routinely cheats, like full on eats cheez its and bread and what not, and just deals with the symptoms-in her case headaches that mean her liver and kidneys are having a hard time...brilliant, right? The other gluten intolerant one is pretty good... -
ARCHIVED Glutino Products
HAK1031 replied to stolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ditto on all of the above. the only ones I don't like are the cereals that are supposed to be like cheerios- they're too sugary for me. perky-o's are better IMO -
*bangs head against computer* WHY??? what is the point of having wheat in cooking spray??? And on steak too?? One of the easiest foods to get gluten-free??? Well thanks for the heads up anyway any other tricks we should be worried about?

ARCHIVED Pumpkin Bread
HAK1031 replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds yummy! I have a bad habit of eating half of what I bake as soon as it comes out of the oven, so a big muffin for only 200 cals sounds appealing! I'm allergic to squash though so I might turn this into a banana muffin recipe. Or carrot or sweet potato...any thoughts on how well that would work? -
ARCHIVED Outback Bread - Gluten Free!
HAK1031 replied to Emily Elizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I forgot about that bread...that stuff was good! I miss hearty brown bread...I'll have to try this -
I have no idea actually. Gluten does weird things to our bodies...I would guess it's some kind of inflammatory response? I don't know, but when I eat gluten I feel like I'm 90...and I'm 16!!! I've had joint troubles all my life, and have already had one knee surgery and am looking at another. But gluten affects my entire body (as it does to most) and I feel...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Endometriosis
HAK1031 replied to 1GreysFan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There are quite a few of us...there was a thread about it a while ago, you might want to do a search. Endo is an autoimmune disorder, making celiac more prevalent in those who have it. I asked my gyno if there was a direct link, and she said it was hard to tell, as both are so common that it's hard to tell if it's coincedental. Endo wouldn't cause vitamin...
