ARCHIVED Five Year Old Telling On Self
HAK1031 replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
She probably won't understand the concept of cancer. But telling her that she won't be able to grow big and strong could help, and explaining to her that her body thinks gluten, even a teeny bit, is poison, and she really just can't have it. If she continues to cheat you may need to supervise her more, maybe enlist teachers. And tell her that if she wants... -
ARCHIVED Help Needed W/ Project
HAK1031 replied to It's Karin with an I's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Glad to help! And glad to procrastinate on my own hw -What were you thinking when you were diagnosed? I was relieved to find out why I had been sick, and amazed to find out that all these random problems (broken bones left and right, constant sinus infections, etc.) I had had since I was a little kid were all connected, and all so easily resolved... -
Challah...this is officially my next free time (provided I get any!) project. Possibly to be embarked upon with my aunt...if she can make egg-free challah (an oxymoron, I know!) for my egg-allergic cousin, she can do it gluten-free too! I was reading the woman's blog...a motzi over a rice cracker that sounds so sad! My family doesn't do shabbos very often...

ARCHIVED Help- An Appeal To Veterans Particularly- Reacting Again!
HAK1031 replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hartford Hostpital...*shakes head*. When my mom was delivering my brother, they told her she needed a c-section. She found out later that this was only a matter of convenience for the doctor as labor was progressing normally. It also complicated my 10lb. 4oz. birth 8 years down the road. That was in the 80s. I hope you feel better...I agree with everyone... -

ARCHIVED Confessions Of A Cook
HAK1031 replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh dear, I have a few of these: -My mother grew popping corn in the garden one year, and we dried it out to use. I had been putting the corn in small grocery bags and putting them in the microwave like normal popcorn. Once in a while the bag got a little scorched, but never anything bad. This one time though, I put it in and went into another room for... -
ARCHIVED Yoplait New Labeling
HAK1031 replied to Charlotte K's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think so...yoplait is a kraft brand, and they clearly label. Maybe you are reacting to something else in the yogurt? Dairy? Fruit? Another flavoring? Or was the spoon somehow CC'd? Crumbs over the open silverware drawer? -
ARCHIVED Craving Veggie Chips
HAK1031 replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Unfortunately I have no idea how you might make them! Sorry!! But I do think they're fried if you're feeling adventurous. -
oh god, the zipper *shudders* I normally can do roller coasters ok, because they're short, open air, and the forward motion doesn't bother me that much. But those rides that spin you around and around and turn you upside down...I can NOT do those!! motion sickness is not fun! I do find that a big bus is better, but those mini buses (shuttle type) that...

ARCHIVED Buying Fod Online
HAK1031 replied to Paytons-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many companies are actually based in Canada. Kinnikinnick is one of my favorites for perpared baked goods- breads, bagels, donuts, etc. Glutino is my other favorite, for pretzels and crackers, and their daughter company gluten-free pantry for baking mixes. I would think that these are sold to/shipped to Canada as well- half the box is in French for a reason... -
ARCHIVED Now Really Stuck!
HAK1031 replied to shan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Jennie-O makes turkey bacon that is gluten and pork free, though I don't know if it's Kosher certified..just throwing it out there! But I eat anything for breakfast, leftovers, etc...I used to love pizza for breakfast! Plus that's more filling than a bowl of cereal, and the time when you need all those calories is in the morning when you have a big day... -
ARCHIVED Craving Veggie Chips
HAK1031 replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't think this is quite what you're looking for, but I love Terra chips- they're made from root vegetables (sweet potatoes, yucca, beets, and others), and you can get them at the grocery store, although they are still 3 or 4 dollars a bag -
ARCHIVED Hey What Do You Do To De-stress ?
HAK1031 replied to thumper's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Baking, learning a new piece on the piano (which I'm terrible at so it really takes a TON of concentration and takes my mind off the stress lol), playing the violin (which I'm not terrible at!) but the biggest one...YOGA. Seriously, it's amazing. And I'm not really into the whole new-age thing, half the time I probably don't do the breathing or poses... -
ARCHIVED Needing Some Support
HAK1031 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As for oatmeal, Enjoy Life makes a Granola cereal that, cold, resembles horse treats in many respects (and my horse agrees ) However, if you add milk (dairy or otherwise) like usual and then throw it in the microwave for a few minutes, you get an oatmeal-like cereal that's pretty darn good. The best flavor to do this with is cinnamon crunch, though the... -
Ouch!! Yeah, it's hard to enjoy the scenery that way...My dad and I made the four hour drive from CT to upstate NY to look at colleges this weekend, and took back roads halfway there...he couldn't understand that I REALLY did not want anything to eat, and he should just stop and get whatever he wanted...lol. Thankfully a snowstorm kept us on the highway the...

ARCHIVED Needing Some Support
HAK1031 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kim, If you can find another child in your area that has this (and preferably has been dealing with it for a while) I can't even begin to express to you how valuable a resource that is for you and your family. A close friend of mine is also celiac, and has been diagnosed since she was 9. When I was diagnosed this fall, she was my number one supporter,... -
ARCHIVED Salmon With Dill Dumplings
HAK1031 replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Collette, you HAVE to write a cookbook! Or open a restaurant!!! Do you have any idea how amazing your recipes sound? I haven't even had a chance to MAKE any of them yet, and already I have new favorite foods These are gourmet! -
There might be! Gluten can explain a LOT... I get carsick but it hasn't gotten better since going gluten-free...it's only gotten worse as I get older. I hate it when my parents decide to take the "scenic route" of windy, hilly roads! The only way I feel better is if I am the one driving...having something else to concentrate on is helpful.

that sounds like a typical glutening for me, but you might want to see the doc to be sure. and make sure you are drinking enough fluids because of the D. good luck, hope you feel better I get awful pain from gluten, it's trapped gas in my case. but severe abdominal pain can definitely be a cause for concern...like I said, see the doc, though they may not...
