  1. Does his pediatrician at least know? Doctor's notes for school can be important so that his needs are taken seriously. Also his nutrient levels in his blood and his growth may need to be mroe carefully monitored. But I agree that you definitely should NOT put him back on gluten for testing.
  2. It sounds like you're pretty new to celiac/gluten intolerance. Don't think of this as a "diet" the way you might think of a weight-loss diet, instead think of it as a lifestyle overhaul. You really can't eat ANY gluten at all...one crumb is enough to leave me doubled-over. Even though you may not feel sick from it, it is still doing its damage. You also have...
  3. What about the sour cream? I was at a celiac friend's house a few weeks ago, and she was making dip, and mentioned something about watching out for a certain brand of sour cream because they recently added gluten (probably in the form of MFS) I didn't pay much attention because I'm mostly dairy-free, but it's something to look into. She did say that Daisy...
  4. barley flavoring is in many yogurts, and this would be a "fermented grain". it would be under the umbrella of "natural flavoring"
  5. I say risky...I know I've gotten sick from them but I can't be sure if it was the gluten or the dairy. Yoplaits are safe, as are many Colombo, although I understand the appeal of organic/all natural yogurt.
  6. Last night was closing night for Pride and Prejudice (such a great show...) and we had our cast party. I made gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, and figured, like most parties, I'd be able to eat one or two things. But, I was suprised to see that I could eat more than I couldn't!! There were chips, fruit, vegetables, soda, and of course, my cookies (which...
  7. These are my family's favorite too :-)
  8. ugh...I'm 16 and have something like 8 or 9 cavities. If I have one more dentist yell at me for not brushing well I'm going to scream. I know I have at least one right now that I need to get filled, but I have nasty reactions to novacaine, plus I doubt my dentist is knowledgable about gluten-free dentsitry (haven't gone since official DX). My teeth are...
  9. I put on sweatpants (my stomach gets so distended I can't button my jeans) and drink hot ginger tea. Sometimes sitting on the toilet helps "move things along" I also eat rice...I find that having benign food in my stomach actually makes it feel a bit better.
  10. This one wasnt hard to track down so much as stupid/annoying. A friend of mine walked on the bus with Dunkin Donuts hot chocolate which, though possibly CC'd , is OK. She offered me a sip, and it tasted different then usual...then she said it is the new milky way flavor!! ARGH!! To make matters worse, I had rehearsal for Pride and Prejudice that afternoon...
  11. yep, thumbs only here too! plus the weird fingerprint thing people were talking about, and the eyelashes!
  12. Sounds like a weak positive to me. And yes, being gluten-lite would definitely affect your results.
  13. Interesting, though I don't feel it is very thorough. My top matches were Hilary ( I suppose I agree with her stances, although I dont support her) closely followed by Obama, who I support. The one suprise was McCain, whom I actually like a great deal, was towards the bottom of my list. That said, I like McCain because I agree with him on a few key issues...
  14. just an update...my VERY PICKY celiac (most likely, is getting started on diet) approves of these and she hasn't liked any of my other baking lol
  15. It's on the safe list on this site. However, the bread itself may have wheat four, much the same way most cornbreads or some buckwheat noodles are a combination of safe and unsafe flours.
  16. hmm, the only thing that comes to mind is an old rhyme: "good, better, best, never stop to rest, until the good is better, and the better, best." What language did it come from? I can help with French, Spanish, or Italian.
  17. I just made AMAZING cookies... guaranteed to satisfy any chocolate craving (trust me, I know chocolate cravings ) I also made them dairy free. 1 cup cocoa powder 1/3 cup canola oil 1/2 cup margarine 1/2 cup baking mix (or flour w/ xanthan gum, I used Arrowhead Mills baking mix) 1/4 tsp baking powder (1/8 if using baking mix that already has...
  18. If you can find another child with celiac (there's bound to be one in the school or in town) arrangto ie for them to meet. Honestly, this was teh MOST helpful thing- a girl who I have been friends with since I was 11 has celiac, and I never paid much attention it until I was diagnosed just a few months ago. But WOW, has she been helpful- for moral support...
  19. it's excellent with hummus, too. or greek yogurt, though that isn't cf. i never use mayo
  20. oh curtis the show is even better if you look at it with the mindset that he's trying to pick up the women... true or not, it's hilarious
  21. There are others with both, yes. I have other anaphylactic allergies, but not nuts. (latex and squash...wtf??? lol) As for cookies, its time to get creative in the kitchen! Homemade= sooo much better than store bought :-) But there are plenty of gluten and nut free cookies out there- I suggest you try a health food store, such as whole foods or trader...
  22. nope- spelt is a variety of wheat. wikipedia explains it well.

    ARCHIVED Costco

so I haven't been to costco since going gluten-free, but I've heard they sell lots of gluten-free products (hopefully for cheaper than the health food store...I hate paying $7 for a box of cereal that only has enough for like 4 bowls) lol so does anyone know what products they often have and where to find them?
  24. If you have a wheat allergy (as opposed to gluten intolerance or celiac disease) then I especially wouldn't have wheat in your house at all. touching it can be plenty to cause a reaction. I have cousins with anaphylactic peanut and egg allergies where just the tiniest bit of contact on the skin will cause them to stop breathing. Allergies have been known...
  25. I don't think the menu was different, I just think the manager knew what he was talking about (well at least I would hope so if he's a celiac himself) and had the kitchen take appropriate precautions :-)
