  1. Tests I would request due to having gluten sensitivity would be: thyroid panel, including TSH, free T3 and Free T4 (high correlation with gluten issues and thyroid/adrenal issues) serum cortisol (ditto above--cortisol tests adrenals) Iron, iron binding capacity, and ferritin vitamin D B12 magnesium cholesterol panel What blood test did you have...
  2. Having worked in a health food store with many "natural" vitamin companies...i've learned that almost all companies, even the most natural among them, use some synthetic vitamins, and there is not necessarily anything wrong with that. However, you do want the best quality, synthetic or not, so you want D3, you want methylcobalamin B12, you want mixed tocopherols...
  3. Oh, also meant to say, your iron is so low that you really have got to make that a priority and find a good quality iron and take up to 100mg a day to get it up. Other things to help are to eat more red meat and eggs and green leafy veggies, and you can also cook in cast iron skillets. Just don't forget the vitamin C! Liz
  4. You're welcome! Carlson's cod liver oil is great because you will also get DHA and EPA which are essential fatty acids. However, it will only give you 400IU vit. D so I would still supplement 1-2000IU in addition to that. I buy mine through my doctor from a company called Designs for Health...not sure if you'll be able to find anything similar at a health...
  5. I can't believe your doctor told you to take a multivitamin...I think you need a new doctor! Vitamin D should be over 30, ideally around 55-60, and to get it up from 19 you need to take 2000 IU per day of D3 for a long time (I took mine every day for 3 months, then when the level went up to 55 I dropped down to every other day, and it went back down...
  6. Don't know the details, but gluten can cause opioid-like issues in our bodies, like an addiction...so as you go off of it, some people experience weird withdrawal symptoms temporarily. I'd google it on this website (gluten and opioids). Hope this is helpful! Liz
  7. I'm not at all an expert, and haven't dealt with celiacs with toddlers, but it seems to me that a 3 year old should show more improvement in 5 months so I think your instinct is right. My daughter and I were just recently diagnosed (4 months now), she is 8. We are completely gluten and casein free, with minimal soy and eggs. I also have noticed a lot of...
  8. My guess is it was a bacterial infection from the restaurant food (shrimp probably). If not that, i'd guess casein sensitivity. Liz
  9. There are two diets a person can follow which can really help with blood sugar levels but that do not involve all the carb counting. One is a vegan diet, you can learn more on the website for the Physician's committee for Responsible Medicine, www.pcrm.org There have been many long-term studies showing the benefits of this diet for diabetes. The other...
  10. You know, i've been visiting these boards for a few months, and have still not quite figured out all the abbreviations...DD, DH etc. I'm sure it's posted on the website somewhere so I should just look it up. anyway, I can totally relate to your paranoia about food now...my duaghter is 8 and we've been Gluten-free Casein-free for about 4 months. We...
  11. Here's the reference and abstract: Title: A milligram of gluten a day keeps the mucosal recovery away: A case report Source: Nutrition Reviews [0029-6643] Biagi yr:2004 vol:62 iss:9 pg:360 -363 Abstract (Summary) In recent years it has been suggested that patients with celiac disease can be adequately followed up on the basis of merely clinical...
  12. Thanks Susan! I'll keep an eye out for this...with the coconut mixed with other flavors, we might do ok with it! Liz
  13. oops, the smiley face at the end was supposed to be a sad face...lol.
  14. I'll check those out, thanks! As far as the coconut oil goes...I only wish me and my daughter liked coconut! Unfortunately, it's one of those really great foods, that neither of us can stand Liz
  15. Thanks so much for all of the great ideas everyone! I will print them all up so that I remember...its' so easy to get stuck in a rut and not realize how many options there actually are! Liz
  16. Outside of the rice cereal with rice milk, or Van's waffles (which actually I think have some soy)...anyone have ideas for my 8 year old for breakfast? I want her to have protein in the morning, but outside of eggs which she can't have, and sausage which she loves but I really don't want to give her every day...i'm out of ideas. Until now, we've just been...
  17. Thanks, I think i'll see if my doctor can order that test for me...for my daughter i'll probably just try to treat her assuming she has it. Do you have any recommendations for healing...priorities etc? Liz
  18. Don't expect Mayo to give you answers LOL. My mom spent a week there with diarrhea that caused her to go to 86 pounds, they told her she had ulcerative colitis and told her to take pepto bismol. two years later she died of adenocarcinoma of unknown origin (my guess is small intestine). She was never diagnosed celiac...but I got it from somehwere (DQ2 gene...
  19. I've never heard of them, but just looked at some of the products and to me they look pretty good with the amounts of nutrients and types (i.e. using vitamin E with mixed tocopherols, using D3 which is better absorbed that D2). My only problem is they use cyanocobalamin for B12. The best vitamins use methylcobalamin (more expensive to process) because that...
  20. If you can't get the doctor to run basic things like iron and B12, time for a new doctor! I'd try to find a holistic MD. Hormones are also important to check on as celiac disease puts extra stress on adrenal and thyroid glands. I wouldn't worry about B vitamins being high...RDI's are set too low anyway, and if his absorption isnt' good he needs extra...
  21. Thanks for the info, I need to really research this leaky gut issue and get her on a program for healing. I have probiotics and multivitamins for her...but am inconsistent giving them to her. Do you know of a good place to get kids' vitamins and supplements (Gluten-free Casein-free)? Liz
  22. We do use alot of pure maple syrup and raw honey (BTW raw honey also works great on cuts to heal and is antibacterial). But, I know given we probably are dealing with candida issues, we should cut it all out, and I know I will eventually at least for me...not sure how i'm gonna get my sugar addict daughter to totally cut out sugar..she's already cut out...
  23. Yes my daughter reacts most strongly to red dye #40 and yellow #5, besides MSG. I've found some organic dye-free gummy worms and candies at whole foods which helps a bit...but it is still just so hard to avoid exposure at friensd's houses etc. My duaghter doesn't have a physical reaction to the dyes though...just emotional/behavioral...although last night...
  24. Thanks for everyone's comments...it's good to know others have had similar experiences and have some hope for the future! I'll look more into the phenols issue. I'm familiar with Feingold's stuff, but i'm trying to really get a handle on the original underlying cause and try to heal that rather than just avoiding certain foods (of course we have to do...
  25. Don't think there is such as study as you're asking for at this time. Did find this though-- Following is the discussion section from an article taken from (bolding mine): The Lancet, volume 358, Issue 9279, 4 August 2001, pages 356-361 "Mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their relatives: a cohort study" Discussion Our study on the...
