I had D that lasted for a week once (before I was gluten-free, so had no clue...) I got to the point where even water went straight through my entire gut I was low on potassium - you can do a make-it-yourself pedialyte with water, regular (table) salt and fake salt (check the label, you want the kind that is pretty high in potassium), plus sugar or...

ARCHIVED Excuse Me, Are These Croutons Gluten-free
babysteps replied to mushroom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I think croutons or toast points are the most common 'whoops' at restaurants on gluten-free orders! Amazing how often it happens (maybe 1 in 5 dining outs?) - oddly, I have rarely been glutened at a such a place - they are usually good about bringing back a new (different!) order of the same item. Maybe it just underscores how careful us gluten-free diners... -
Hey! I realize this is an old thread, but... Went to the Cookhouse in New Milford a week ago (haven't been online since...); they are also in Darien and Orange or West Haven. They CAN accommodate gluten-free diners. When I identified myself as a gluten-free diner, the waiter brought a copied piece of paper that said "Flour free" options on it...

You can buy it direct from the company as well If anyone knows of a gluten-free, ff and dye free conditioner, let me know! until you get the flour-snack baking up and going, try lots of veggies (you can blanch them if raw is a problem) and fruit (be careful of store-bought items especially where you eat the peel, I believe they are usually coated with food wax, which typically has corn) - easy to prep once every few days and have at hand for on-demand snacks whenever your daughter... -

ur welcome I think you deserve a lot of credit - sounds like you gave your brother enough information for him to make his own decision. And that isn't the decision you or I may have made, but it's his, it's informed, and he's happy with his course of care. -
ARCHIVED Most Common Additives In Restaurants
babysteps replied to huevo-no-bueno's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Also flour sometimes in polenta also no help needed! food service chicken (as in, from Sysco) is often pre-marinated, and that marinade is usually *not* gluten free. Also it very well may have MSG in it, or the restaurant could be using seasoning with MSG. One post said, I think it was at TGIFridays, the grilled chicken was pre-marinated, but... -

ditto everyone else - be a safe diner, that means having food with you in case a restaurant cannot accommodate you. Usually you can find something to eat. Don't forget salads, they can help! Even if topped with tuna fish It sounds like you are ordering what you *hope* will work. That usually results in getting sick in my experience. Once I decided... -

one cheap, portable, good cold food with protein - boiled eggs! I boil up 4 or 5 at a time, then eat for snacks - the ones you can buy at delis or supermarkets with pull dates are always dated out a week, I usually eat within a few days of cooking. If you are new to boiling eggs (I know, it's always a joke), here is my favorite method: Feel free to post... -

Good luck! My husband jokes that 'everything can't be a gluten reaction, can it' but I tell him it can. You know, I haven't had an itchy butt since going gluten-free, hm wonder about that! Yes , knowlege=power Like AliB says, f you CAN get tested, try *not* to go gluten-free until afterwards sage advice My doctor also gave... -
ARCHIVED First Bbq Holiday With This Disease.... Harder Than I Thought!
babysteps replied to jaime1103's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The good news is that almost anything that is traditionally "bbq" is possible to have gluten-free. But almost all of it might have gluten. It all depends ! Most 'food service' burgers in the US either have flour/breadcrumbs to hold them together and/or have "natural flavors" - some gluten-free folks seem to tolerate "natural flavors" but I do not,... -

1. When you eat out at a restaurant do you worry about cross contamination? Yes 2. How has being diagnosed with celiac or gluten intolerance affected the way you eat out? Has it affected your social life? Yes, I make sure to call ahead and/or warn rest of my party they'll hear a speech. For group dining events I usually skip the passed food &... -
I think I had repressed this... Just remembered what my Dr. told me, after an extreme bout of D (resulted in prescription potassium) with no known cause - I would get really light headed suddenly, or feel faint. It was weird, and it wasn't just because I'd lost a few (but not too many) pounds from the D. You know what he said? "You're getting older...

Feel free to mention to your store that "wheat free" doesn't mean "gluten free" - they sound like they might listen Yah, I read every label too, ever since I got sick from unsalted butter that had "natural flavors" as an ingredient - who knew butter had 'ingredients' like that?!? Hope you feel better soon. -

I'm sensitive to fragrance, too. Once I went to gluten-free and fragrance free personal care products (soap, detergent, shampoo, deodorant, lotion etc) my skin got much less 'cranky', or at least cranky a lot less of the time! For whatever reason I didn't go to fragrance free shampoo until much later than my other items, I guess I didn't think it was... -

can't find the edit button, so ... ate again last night at Brasserie Pip, experience wasn't as good. Different waitress, was okay and bread was segregated (spouse eats it out) - but perhaps I need to change the 'open to substitutions' part of my ordering speech. I ordered leg of lamb, oven roasted (menu specified "medium rare"), stuffed with... -

gloves can definitely help! Separately, could your wife make your son's sandwiches the night before & put in plastic, then you could hand to him without bread contact? -
People do have different levels of perceived sensitivity. My cousin with positive bloodwork (but no biopsy, never did one) has a less extreme dietary reaction than I do (and my bloodwork was "normal"). But she is also allergic to wheat so her throat swells if she has any - good way to tell cc, but scary! My skin improved dramatically, and cc went...

The "Eggs Up Grill" in Portland, CT (across the CT river from Middletown, south of Hartford) is run by a celiac. Morton's (the steakhouse chain) doesn't advertise it but they do have a gluten-free menu - at least they do at their Stamford CT branch, and there is a branch in Hartford. Depending on budget, if you can't make it to a restaurant with an...

wow, sounds like you are seeing immediate change! strange things can happen as you basically de-tox, so don't be surprised by some initial ups & downs. I am getting used to giving 'the speech' - to the waiter. Check Open Original Shared Link for a helpful 'restricted diner' protocol. I admit I don't usually contact the chef, but I do note that I'm gluten-free when making reservations, or if someone else has made the reservation I call separately to say "one of the diners on the Jones reservation Thursday...
