  1. Could be there is wheat flour in the gravy if it is store bought. Wheat flour is usually the thickener in store bought gravy. Gravy also has oil or fat of some sort in it. Some people have trouble digesting fats at first. The thing to do is make a list of all the ingredients in the gravy and keep it for reference. Then test those ingredients one at a...
  2. I don't think it is all that surprising for a person to be hyper-vigilant about their food at first. Adjusting to the gluten-free diet means becoming aware of our food in ways that most people never do. For celiacs being aware of what's in our food is a medical issue. Over time with experience and success on the gluten-free diet the anxiety should lessen...
  3. Hi Carmello, Welcome to the forum! The good thing about starting young on the gluten-free diet is that you will have a lifetime of healthy eating. After you get used to eating gluten-free it is not a big deal at all. You can bring snacks with you in a backpack or something when you go out, so you don't have to worry about not having something safe...
  4. Hi Veghead, Yes, there are some members who don't have symptoms. Not having symptoms is known as silent celiac, It will make things more tricky. You might find it simpler to eat mostly whole foods, and avoid processed foods. Try to stick with foods that have minimal ingredients lists. 3 ingredients is great, but a few more sometimes is ok. It...
  5. I basically don't eat noodles or tacos, so no help there. Otherwise for spices I use black pepper salt garlic or garlic powder lemon juice herbs or dried herbs If I was back in Ohio I'd probably use some sour grass, they have a pretty good crop of it this year.
  6. My last blood test results were ready the day after they took the blood! It wasn't for celiac disease but still, it was ready that quick. Waiting 4 weeks to get results is ridiculous. I suggest calling every day and pestering them for a status and a revised date for the results. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Your symptoms do sound like they could...
  7. Hi, You may have DH (dermatitis herpetiformis) starting. DH is diagnosed by taking a small biopsy sample of skin next to (but not in) the lesion. They check it for antibodies. People with DH seem to have some problems being diagnosed at times. They don't always show the same blood antibodies as other celiacs for some reason. There is more info in...
  8. Hi R, I suggest you don't assume that there is only one cause of your symptoms. If you read the signature lines of some forum members you will see that they may have multiple food intolerances besides gluten. That isn't real unusual. Eliminating one problem food can change or improve your symptoms, but if there are other problem foods in your diet...
  9. Welcome back Chris!
  10. HI,SFA, There is a really wide range of symptoms to celiac disease damage. Some people have no symptoms at all and are called "silent celiacs". Others have digestive symptoms, gut paint, joint pain., skin rashes, nerve damage, insomnia etc, etc. Determining celiac entirely by symptoms is difficult because of that wide range of symptoms. However,...
  11. Hi HD, You could ask your doctor to do a thyroid ultra sound. That might give an idea of what's going on. My doctor said an ultra sound is a better choice than an MRI, and cheaper / faster too. Thyroid nodules are very common in people, and usually they are not a problem. But it is good to get them checked. If there is a nodule generally the doctor...
  12. Hmm, you are right D, we probably won't get many takers on that training! There are other things to do besides crying tho that might even be more fun. How about fishing or getting a trophy buck? Maybe a big tax refund? Well, maybe the reverse is what's needed here for D. Perhaps a list of things to make women cry would help. I think smashing...
  13. You could try adding pro-biotics. Also digestive enzymes. Taking pysillium husks or another fiber with your food may help. If your villi are flat as pancakes it may take a while for your gut to heal. That doesn't mean it won't happen, just that the healing process can be somewhat slow. You probably haven't been absorbing nutrients that your body needs...
  14. Hi S, I am sorry about the kiddo. Celiac does run in families so it's not unusual for offspring to have it also. But the good thing is that a gluten-free diet can be a much healthier diet than most people would eat. It's a good idea to avoid processed foods when eating gluten-free. Instead stick with whole foods. A kid starting out on whole foods...
  15. I always thot it was good when the women folk weren't crying. Might just be my male perspective tho... Maybe you could give other women classes in not crying? Probably some men out there would pay to send their wives to your classes. Where's the little devil face mote?
  16. An elimination diet is good way to go. There are lots of threads about them here. the advantage of an elimination diet is it will find food intolerances as well as allergies. But allergy tests won't find food intolerances.
  17. The test results may not show a gluten sensitivity, in fact they usually don't. But more people have a gluten sensitivity than people have celiac disease. Another thing to keep in mind is that healing from gluten exposure is not an overnight process. Nerve/nueral type issues seem to be the slowest to heal. You might be interested in reading up on gluten...
  18. Hi S, Welcome to the forum! We hope you will like it here. You have 2 newly diagnosed conditions to adjust too, and that can take a bit of time. Just getting used to eating gluten-free can take quite a while. Healing could take a couple years, although that is just a rough guess, not a set number. Everyone is different, or rather individual. Some...
  19. Hi Niks, The way I understand it, Crohnies generally go on steroids for a variable period of time until things are healed up and stabilized. Then they may be able to go off them for a while, or may try a different drug. Crohn's can affect certain areas of the gut and not affect others. So a certain area might get repeated damage and eventually have...
  20. Hey, thoze r the best kind of threds. hick! I see some of the "experts" on drinking from the funny pages have loaned their assistance to answering your query. Seems to me there are quite few threads on drinking on this here forum. Probably has some medicinal use I suppose. The important thing is to never mention the NSA in one of your posts...
  21. Eh, mostly water, a little coffee here and there sometimes. You do know most people are too busy drinking on Friday night to take time to reply tho right? Otherwise I might try some kind of rum or vodka once in a while. Mainly to help with getting to sleep faster. I saw a commercial for this Tito's vodka recently. They said it is gluten-free and...
  22. I used to work from home. I worked for HP on a network management contract. Some companies use work from home employees for their help desk support. My job was long hours even tho it was at home. A help desk job / customer support position would most likely be fixed hours instead, which is probably better for you.
  23. Hi Niks, I have celiac disease, my younger brother had Crohn's disease. So they are at least somewhat related genetically. I am glad you found the Crohn's forum, they are a great bunch of people. Not that the peeps here are any less so. But they do have a more "loose" sense of humor I think. That's ok tho. I understand she isn't diagnosed with Crohn...
  24. Hi Niks, About the diary, yes, it can cause bleeding. It does for me. There is a condition called casein sensitive enteropathy. She may have that. In celiac disease our gut become inflamed and sensitive, and that can lead to them becoming sensitized to many different foods. Some of the commoner ones are nightshades, dairy, soy corn, eggs. Food intolerances...
  25. Hi CG, You can cheat on your diet if you want. It is only hurting you. Many people do that of course, cheat on their diets. The immune process isn't going to stop and start on a dime though. It starts quickly and tapers off very slowly. So the affect of cheating once may be a few months or more of increased sensitivity to gluten. If a few months...
