ARCHIVED Extreme Fatigue & Brain Fog
GFinDC replied to snatal31's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Sophie, Welcome to the forum! The definition of gluten free can vary and awful lot among people. For some fad dieters it could mean not eating pizza or donuts on Friday nights, For some very sensitive celiacs it means washing all their grains and produce before cooking it or eating it. And for others it means no processed or few processed foods... -
ARCHIVED Elevation Burger Not Gluten-Free
GFinDC replied to GrammieOf6's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yep, ya gotta ask every time. We are not at the point where we can assume any place is safe for us to eat. Even places with gluten-free menus are not always reliable. Buyer beware should probably be the celiac motto. -
ARCHIVED Can This Be Celiac?
GFinDC replied to Big Bob's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi BBob, Sounds like it could be celiac to me. There are quite a few threads on this forum by people who had their gall bladders removed thinking that was the problem. But it wasn't. Having a gall bladder removed does cause it's own set of problems with digestion, and the time to adjust to not having a gall bladder can vary . But several months to... -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten The Reason For Anxiety, Depression, Fatigue And Panic Attacks
GFinDC replied to susieL.17's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The way I understand it, our noodles( brains) are mostly made of fatty tissue and nerves. So ifn' that be true, it makes sense that if you can't absorb fats correctly, or at all, that your noodle might be affected. So, it seems like celiac could definitely cause mental symptoms. Not to mention there is a lot of research showing it does. Try a saerach... -
ARCHIVED How Did I Get Glutened!?!
GFinDC replied to CanineGluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi CanineG, I don't think the idea of intermittent fasting is bad. Open Original Shared Link Intermittent fasting (IF) is a Open Original Shared Link that alternates between periods of Open Original Shared Link (usually meaning consumption of water only) and non-fasting. There is some evidence that intermittent fasting may have beneficial effects... -
ARCHIVED Which Thing Should I Try?
GFinDC replied to Marie1976's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You'd need to check the particular brand of B-12 you are considering to see if it is vegan. I'd think about something you are eating as a cause of the symptoms. So take a look at all the things you usually eat / drink and vitamins and look for common ingredients or something that you are consuming on a regular basis. Do you eat a lot of soy? That's trigger... -
ARCHIVED Can You Go Back On Dairy Eventually?
GFinDC replied to cavernio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think it is a very individual reaction. Some people don't have any problem with dairy from the start. For some it works ok after a while healing. For others is never works. How it will work for you is something you will discover in time. For me I had severe reactions to dairy for the first couple years. So I didn't eat it except to trial it twice... -

ARCHIVED What Do You All Think About Idea That All Grains Must Go For Many To Heal?
GFinDC replied to slee11211's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ha Ha Chili, there are so many possible problems with grains! Well, anyway, here is a link to a short news story about the brown rice and arsenic link. There are lots of hits on it you search on brown rice and arsenic. Open Original Shared Link Brown rice -- and anything made with brown rice syrup --could be a source of potentially toxic arsenic... -
ARCHIVED Thoughts?
GFinDC replied to troykm's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Troy, Welcome to the site! (hand waving smiley here that we don't have available.) You could indeed have celiac or NCGI. Before starting the gluten-free diet though it would be good to have the blood antibody tests done for celiac. It could also be a wheat allergy instead, which is pretty much treated the same way, with diet. Different tests... -
ARCHIVED No Cheese Pizza- Please Help
GFinDC replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Daiya cheese shreds should work. They are a dairy free/soy free cheese substitute. -
ARCHIVED Did Celiac Come Back?
GFinDC replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That could do it I suppose. I got sick from using a toaster after I first went gluten-free that hadn't been changed out. It doesn't take much. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Looking For Advice...
GFinDC replied to roxieb73's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Quincy, Well, my advice to avoid restaurants is aimed at people new to the gluten-free diet really. When starting and trying to adjust it is simpler for people not to take chances. I think after people do the gluten-free diet a while they learn what restaurants are safe for them to eat at. I mostly don't eat at restaurants though. I did try an... -
LOL Kirily, I won't hold my breath then! You may know this already, but some vitamin deficiencies can cause depression. Actually, feeling bad, tired, weak physically for an extended period of time can make some people (like me) depressed. Vitamin deficiencies are common with untreated celiac because the damage to our small intestine villi hinders...

Yep, family history should be looked at for sure. One of my younger brothers died of Crohn's complications, and had celiac as well. Two uncles with colon cancer also. Two sisters probably have celiac or NCGI. Darn genes sure do have an effect! Some of the celiac genes are associated with other autoimmune diseases too.

ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed Newbie
GFinDC replied to Jess and Drez's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Genetic testing can show the presence of genes for celiac, but having the genes does not mean you have celiac. Many people have some or one of the genes but don't have the condition. If your mother wants to be tested she should stay on gluten and get the blood antibody tests done. The antibodies are a darn good indication something is going on. -
ARCHIVED Did Celiac Come Back?
GFinDC replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry Tim is not feeling well Vincent. He showed initial improvement on the gluten-free diet right? So that was the result of someting, most likely going gluten-free. Having ongoing back and forth symptoms is not unusual or strange IMHO when new to the gluten-free diet. It might help to be sure he is eating a really clean diet for the first few months... -
There a number of threads on the forum about finger nail ridges, here is one. Ridges in fingernails There are better ways to "punish" yourself Kirily than eating gluten. You could make yourself work on something around the house, or help someone else who might need it. Heck you could make me a nice gift and send it free of charge. Hmm, a solid...

ARCHIVED This Only A Trial Test?
GFinDC replied to Jinx's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group) has a program called GFRAP that trains and certifies restaurants for gluten-free food prep. They have a listing of them on their website. It is still a good idea to check with the restaurant staff because their program does not include ongoing monitoring of compliance. So staff turnover or management changes could degrade... -
Congratulations Diana, I think you have found your answer! The path to finding out out about celiac is kind of slow for many of us. It seems like doctors often don't think to test for it although the symptoms seem obvious in hindsight. Maybe that will change in the future. Awareness is slowly growing. It seems often enough we are "diagnosed' by someone...

ARCHIVED Celiac - Stressful Disease
GFinDC replied to CutieLuv22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You got it right, celiac does not go away. Sometimes during pregnancy symptoms can be diminished, but it doesn't go away. You need to treat your celiac disease as a serious, life threatening illness, because that';s what it is. It is not just a diet, it is an auto-immune disease. Your immune system is very powerful, and quite good at destroying invaders... -

ARCHIVED This Only A Trial Test?
GFinDC replied to Jinx's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For me eating out is a concern because I don't like to get sick and in pain for weeks on end. Limited choices is a minor thing. I already have limited choices in the foods I can eat anyway, so no biggie. Most restaraunts that have gluten free menus at least have a good idea of what is required for gluten-free eating. But soy-free, dairy-free, nightshade... -
Sounds like you will do fine with the diet Rick. I wasn't much on cooking every night myself. I used to make big batches of rice and veggies and meat on the weekends and freeze some of it. Make a different version every weekend and after a while you have a nice selection to choose from. A quick turn in the microwave and it is ready. You can also try...

ARCHIVED How To Overocome Frustration, Fear,
GFinDC replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Diana, Both your health and your family are important, it is not a matter of which is more important. You need to be healthy and they need to adjust a little to the reality of what it takes for you to be healthy. People often are slow to adopt change and many don't welcome it at all. But they can learn to do things differently just as you can learn...
