Dying From Celiac?
strack2004 replied to SharonF's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi all! Maybe Joe's doctors knew him well enough to know they couldn't really control all that he did to himself at home and other places. So they just did the best they knew how with medicines to treat all the stuff he did to himself. Someone else said many of the pills may have been vitamins and minerals in individual pills. Just another idea Cheers... -

celiac3270, I'm happy for you, too. It must be wonderful! If that sounds a little wistful, it is, I'm headed for Mayos on April 13 to see if they can find what ails me. Cheers, Ruth - Strack 2004. I see there is another Ruth who posts. -

ARCHIVED Breaking The Vicious Cycle
strack2004 replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi! Yes I have been on the SCD diet for 6 almost 7 months.. I have lost weight and for a time I had a lot more energy. I still sleep fairly well except for waking for the bathroom. I drink too much water in the evening. The diet never did really help my digestive problems. Have just spent 5 days in the hospital over them. Fortunately this hospital had... -

Hi, Red. I have not yet attempted to answer your questions, since I still haven't been diagnosed with celiac. I have been gluten free for 6 months now . Feel I have more energy and sleep sounder except for bathroom breaks, go right back to sleep though which I didn't used to do. How do I go back some 76 years to find the answers to some of these things. ... -

ARCHIVED How Reliable Are The Tests? Desperate!
strack2004 replied to dizzy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dizzy., I have been on an SCD celiac diet for about 5 and a half months now. I had blood tests via Mayos which were negative. Do not wish to have the biopsy. My understanding, too is that the blood tests are not to be trusted. I, too, have not done the stool test which I would like to have done. Just can't afford the tests . I am on Medicare and they... -
Hi, Cynical Tomorrow!, I am Strack2004. Have been on the Scdiet 5 months today. In general I note that I am sleeping ever so much better than before I went on this diet. Also, generally I have more get-up-and-go. Also my sharp pain under my right center ribcage comes less frequently. There is still some discomfort there from time to time. Today I am...

ARCHIVED Milk Contains Gluten!
strack2004 replied to CMWeaver's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
yes, but isn't it the lactic acid in milk that makes it give trouble to lactose intolerant people. Is the lactic acid in sugar beets andy different from the lactic acid in sugar beets, or is lactic acid altogether different from lactose? Ruth S. -
ARCHIVED Getting Up All The Time?
strack2004 replied to pturse's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi! I have been gluten-free for 5 months now. My principal benefits have been better sleep and more energy. I still get up once a night, once in awhile twice if I drank water during the evening, eating fish will also do it sometimes. I have no trouble getting back to sleep or getting to sleep in the first place which I used to have. I am still working... -

Nancy: Sorry about the URL! I guess I used to get this site with that one, but now I get a message that the site is discontinued. It's true that version of the site has been discontinued. Here is a URL I just tried out. http:www.scdiet.org/. Put that in at the top of your screen where it says Address. When it comes up, clickon "about" go to the left side... -

Corihere I have not been diagnosed with celiac disease, but have had digestive problems most of my 76+ years. Just decided to go on it. My Doctor gave me his blessing and continues to be encouraging. I have been celiac disease on the SCD version of the diet for 4 months now. Improvements have been increased energy and better sleep patterns. My digestive... -

Nancy, Another celiac site is Open Original Shared Link. This site is designed for celiac, ibs and other digestive problems. It contains an extensive list of legal and illegal foods. Some pharmaceuticals are given in the main list. Not a whole lot. Possibly another area of the site would contain that kind of information. Strack -
ARCHIVED Polyps/tumors Of Small Intestine
strack2004 replied to debmidge's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Debmidge, I don't know if my husband was celiac. I rather doubt it since until the carcinoid symptoms started he always had normal bowel function. I envied him! The diarrhea that came when the carcinoid cancer started was from , I think it was hormones, that were given off by the tumors. They also affected his heart. It took several years from the start... -
ARCHIVED Polyps/tumors Of Small Intestine
strack2004 replied to debmidge's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Do colonoscopies examine the small intestine? I though this test was only for the large bowel. My husband died of carcinoid cancer which usually begins in the small intestine and travels to the liver. In 1979 liver transplants were not done as far as I know. His cancer was too far advanced anyway by the time it was diagnosed. With treatment some people... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does Constipation Persist.
strack2004 replied to Mballerina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Burdee, I am following the SCD (selected carbohydrates diet) rather than the other diets I have directions for. This diet doesn't allow rice. Also most gluten-free breads don't work on this one. I do eat lots of vegetables, meats excluding processed ones, and a few fruits . Many fruits are too acidy for my upper digestive tract. I eat pears occasionally... -

I also prefer Magnesiumpills and vitamin C pills as supplements rather than Milk of Magnesia. There used to be such a thing as milk of mag. tablets, but I haven't seen them for years. The liquid M of M. requires shaking up and tends to stick in thick globs to the sides of the bottle as you use it. It is hard to know if you have shaken it enough. If you... -
IFFGD, an organization concerning ibs, has a nice little journal. I print out a page and enlarge it, then print many copies rather than ordering more little booklets. I don't have the address for this organization with me.. Can bring it along to the library tomorrow when I go to access my e-mail. Hope I remember! It may include too much information to...

Not diagnosed with celiac, but on the diet with improvement in some areas. Parents both had digestion issues. Paternal Grandmother, also. Didn't know that many of my family members. My parents were both from large families, but younger than the others. My heritage is German-Norwegian. Don't think my two sisters have had digestive problems. One daughter does...

Hi, Red 345, It's been awhile!. Thanks for your reply. I have been very careful about gluten in the past three months. Beef (hamburger and roast, rarely), fish, mainly Pollock, occasional canned... -

In line with doing an elimination diet, I'd suggest keeping a food diary and checking it regularly against previous entries. You would also need to keep a record of symptoms experienced day to day and medications. I also record how much water and/or tea I drink and happenings during each day that may have been particularly stressful. I also had my blood... -

I have tingling in hands and toes plus a sort of numbness on the left side of my face. I have not been diagnosed with celiac, but am using an SCD diet anyway. So far no effect on tingling, etc. Do have more energy and sleep better generally. Ruth S. Strack2004
