ARCHIVED Is It The Kool-aid Or Sugar?
AliB replied to Chalula88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Anything processed and with added chemical substances is not going to be doing you much good in the long run. There is an awful lot of stuff out there that looks like food, smells like food and passes for food, but is not made from anything the body would recognise as food. My body is paying the price from a lifetime of consuming substances that masquerade... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Mitzi and Katie. I think that this is sending out negative vibes. Whilst you Katie, and I, and one or two others have had this problem, it is not necessarily usual to the diet. There are many others who have reversed their C through following the diet. Personally, I just think it all boils down to what your individual gut damage is, and where it... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
C has been more of a problem for me since dumping gluten and especially if I eat any dairy. My IBS used to manifest as chronic D but I suspect that is because the reaction I had from gluten was stronger than the reaction from dairy and that didn't show up until I removed gluten. You haven't said how long you have been following the SCD. Certainly during... -

Chicken broth has been used for centuries as not only food but for healing purposes. As has been mentioned you get collagen from the bones but also properties from the marrow, calcium and other minerals from the bones themselves. Funnily enough I was reading about the benefits of chicken broth earlier today, but can't for the life of me remember where... -
I emailed Marios Hadjvassiliou about a year ago to check whether his stance on gluten ataxia had changed since the article was written in 2002 and he replied that it had not and he is more convinced than ever. I have to agree with him. Certainly my ataxia-type (which is what the restless legs are after all) and other neuro symptoms went away after dumping...

Sorry Liv, I didn't notice that you had asked a question. Yes, the SCD could well help as it is naturally gluten, grain, starch, sugar and dairy free. The only dairy that is allowed, well, certainly initially is long cultured probiotic yogurt, although some don't cope even with that initially until their gut has healed. The long (24 hour) culturing ...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I hadn't thought about pectin as being a possible culprit Bea - perhaps my apple a day to keep the Doctor away is not such a good idea after all??? I have some Dandelion, but haven't taken it that much so maybe that might help - certainly its a good liver tonic and that can't be a bad thing. I have tended to veer more now towards foods and herbs as... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hiya. I have a similar problem. Dairy seems to exacerbate mine a bit but I am not sure why either. I didn't have any dairy at all apart from the SCD yogurt for about a year or more but now 18 months on I do have a little here and there, which may not be helping things. I do find magnesium helps a bit and when I am really bunged up Milk of Magnesia... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes. It's been a fairly slow process but at least a gradual one. I wasn't perhaps as disciplined as i ought to have been and that may have sped things up a bit had I done so, but even so, when I think of the walking fungus-factory I was 18 months ago, slathering on the Canesten, etc., at every available moment to how i am now, I can see the progress.... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

How about, should I say it, eBay? I found quite a few on there here in the UK so you might find some over there. It's worth a look. I have a triangular grater that has blades on one side and find that useful but a mandolin would probably do the job quicker (and without the inclusion of fingernails!). Might get one myself. In my stir fries I often add... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To All Grains -- What To Do For Carbs?
AliB replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Andrew. You are not eating grains but you are having quite a lot of carbs which equates to several sugar hits during the day. The extreme fluctuation of your blood sugar is a very likely candidate for the fatigue and also the raise in your cortisol levels. Your diet seems pretty good, the only thing that concerns me is the amount of potato. As... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To All Grains -- What To Do For Carbs?
AliB replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sorry Riceguy. I was looking at it from a biochemical point of view, being that mono-saccharides don't need to be converted and can be absorbed straight in to the blood stream whereas the di's (lactose and sugar) and poly's (grains and starches) have to be broken down. Those of us that lack the appropriate enzymes can't digest them properly which means... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To All Grains -- What To Do For Carbs?
AliB replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It is worth reading up what you can on it - Bruce Fife's Coconut cures is extremely interesting. Interestingly too, there is yet another headline splashed across the front page today 'Alzheimer's cured?' Scientists have identified 'the rogue gene' that marks Alzheimers. They believe that the disease is caused by inflammation and are desperately trying... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To All Grains -- What To Do For Carbs?
AliB replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Carbs can contribute to weight gain in those with insulin issues. Paradoxically they can also contribute to weight loss in some with insulin issues. It all depends on whether you have too much insulin floating around, or too little. Because protein does not spike the blood sugar like carbs do, it has a more gentle effect on blood sugar and gives the... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To All Grains -- What To Do For Carbs?
AliB replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It is a fallacy that we need carbs in order to exist. If the Inuit can live extremely healthy with virtually no carbs at all then I can't quite see what the issue is with it. The foods that Missy'smom has mentioned are all good sources of simple carbs - it's the complex ones that usually cause the problems - the grains, starches and sugars. All fruit... -
Since, after years of digestive issues (including, amongst many other things, palpitations and bloating), poor carb digestion, blood sugar issues and IBS, when my digestion finally collapsed 18 months ago and I discovered the gluten link, I have gradually been rebuilding my digestion and healing my body. I had to remove all complex carbs from my diet including...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As Bea suggests above I put it on my cooked veggies. Some people add a spoonful to their hot drinks - although it tends to float on the top. You can cook with it, you can add it to soups, or stews, mash it in with cooked fruit, use it as a spread. Personally, I like it enough to just eat it off the spoon, but then it is colder here in the UK and it is still... -
ARCHIVED Is Spastic Colon Related To Celiac?
AliB replied to txplowgirl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi. It sounds as though your 'SO' has issues with quite a lot of foods and gluten may well be just one of them. Quite a few of us have come to this site after realising we had issues with gluten, and for some dropping gluten has been the answer. Unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. A significant number also have issues with other foods... -
ARCHIVED Am I Wasting My Time With This Candida Regimen/diet?
AliB replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'd probably get shot for saying this but I kind of think well, which one comes first, the Candida or the Celiac? Personally I knew I had Candida long before I ever really became gluten intolerant, or at least before it really manifested itself. For me I suspect that the Candida may well have somehow instigated the gluten intolerance. I have this analytical... -
ARCHIVED Is It Ok For Me To Eat Eggs Again?
AliB replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I fail to see how you can have an allergy to a food without actually having a reaction of some kind? That doesn't make sense. An allergy by its nature triggers a histamine response and that would show up one way or another. Does make me wonder how accurate these tests actually are. I suppose there is always a possibility that it was some kind of weird... -
ARCHIVED I Wish All I Had Was Celiac
AliB replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yup, all of the above. I know I've posted on the other thread but just to reiterate about your weight. Carbohydrates can actually cause weight loss. It seems that if you are naturally inclined to be a 'carb-burner', then your body burns carbs as its fuel of choice. Any fats you eat with the carbs and any extra carbs you consume over what your body... -
ARCHIVED Am I Wasting My Time With This Candida Regimen/diet?
AliB replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, well, it wasn't that long ago that Doctors were saying there was no such thing as Chronic Fatigue, or Fibromyalgia, either. How many times have things been ridiculed and poo-poohed by the 'Establishment' only to be proved right at a later stage - after all, there was a time when Doctors didn't even consider the washing of hands to be of any importance... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Bear in mind Emily that cooking the yogurt kills the bacteria so it will not give you the benefit that the raw yogurt will. Hopefully it will be ok though as it still has a lot less lactose and the changed casein, so you may be ok with the muffins. Some (including me) have found nuts difficult to cope with initially. I am ok with them now - that improved... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't think we are all that different than we think we are. Our bodily processes should be pretty much the same. We all have the same bits. I think that over time this Western Diet has forced our bodies into dealing with those processes differently than they should and sometimes it is just a case of 'reprogramming' our bodies to work the way they should... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
When I do get to bed now (getting there early enough is still a problem!) I do sleep pretty soundly and much better than I did for years. Many of us have blood sugar issues long before we ever become Diabetic (I suffered with hypos for years prior to the Diabetes) and although that is generally fuelled by carbs, sometimes it can also be due to a lack of...
