ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Excellent Pells. There's one to give more credence to the point of the SCD! -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Rhoger. I am not sure that any of us is 'fine', only that we don't start to get symptoms until the damage reaches a level where the gut and/or liver can't cope any more. Personally I feel that the liver plays a bigger part in all this than a lot realise, as does elevated insulin levels triggered by the high-carbs and sugars in the western diet. Some... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi. Rhoger. When the gut is really damaged many of us have found that we have issues with a lot of foods. There is no point in trying to keep persevering with them - it won't help, and may actually just keep the damage going. I know it is frustrating but you just have to try and be glad of the foods you can eat and settle for them - why be in pain when... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I was thinking about cell renewal. There are different schools of thought on the time it takes for the body to 'renew' itself. Some say up to 7 years, others as long as 15 years. It seems that it can take about 6 months for some cells to rebuild after damage and at the end of the day, that is what the diet is all about. Giving our bodies the means to... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

From a purely personal perspective, hormonal issues are not something that has ever really been a problem for me. I used to get the usual PMT where I was not much fun to be around for a few days each month, but apart from that I seem to have been sailing through the Menopause. It started pretty early with odd missed periods, about 10 years or so ago when... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Skinny is not my problem...........I wish......... I usually find when it is particularly inflamed that I have to keep shifting every five minutes or so - any longer and it get excruciating. It seems almost to 'lock' and I have to wriggle about a bit before attempting to stand or the pain is awful. I think it may help to see if the Ultrasound can pick... -
ARCHIVED Where To Get "schooled" On Soy Intolerance?
AliB replied to David's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's great David. Glad you got over the resistance......... Actually one thing that will be of real benefit is to remove the word 'restrictive' from the equation. Think about what it is that is really restricting - feeling sick on 'normal' food or feeling well on a 'restricted' diet? This diet is common to thousands of people around the earth... -
ARCHIVED Pinapple, Lactose Free Milk, Vomiting
AliB replied to tiredofbeingsickandtired's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Your body is trying to tell you something. Please listen to it. The body produces mucous in an effort to protect itself. It could well be the lactose - many with gut damage are lactose intolerant. It could just as easily be the waffles. Anything processed always runs the risk of being contaminated with stuff you could react to - unless you make it... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's interesting. I also have a sore coccyx that makes sitting quite uncomfortable. Not sure that I really want to go down the hydrocortisone route with it though. When this Ultrasound appointment finally comes through, I think I might ask the Doc if it can be used to check that out rather than worry about the swollen liver, etc., which all seems to... -
Fruit and veg is by far the best thing for healing if you can cope with them but as you say, likely not enough on their own to help you gain weight. Can you cope with fish at all? Even small amounts? That is such a good way to get protein and good Omega fatty acids that can help the gut to heal. How about eggs? Cottage cheese? Tofu? Nuts? (They seem...

I think quite a lot of us have had issues with probiotics at first - I suspect there is a bit of a battle going on down there between the 'baddies' and the 'goodies'! Whilst the probiotics can be a support, the best thing for healing the gut is to cut out the foods that do the damage. gluten-based ones, obviously, but carbs in general can be problematic...

ARCHIVED Anyone React To Dates (like In Larabars)?
AliB replied to rubyred's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Things like SIBO are not always easy to pick up. Gas and bloating is an indication. With Candida overgrowth, there are sometimes external signs like thrush, athlete's foot, dandruff, itchy armpits/groin (the charmingly named 'jock-itch'), fungal nail infestations - these can all be an indication that you are a 'fungus factory'! Having said that, there... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I am sure that a deficit of zinc and particularly D would have an impact on the muscles, and possibly even the BP. To quote from the Vegetarian Society's site, 'Zinc has a range of functions. It plays a crucial role in growth and cell division where it is required for protein and DNA synthesis, in insulin activity, in the metabolism of the ovaries and... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Mia. How long have you been taking the Coconut oil? I have come very rapidly to the conclusion that I should be doing exactly the opposite of what the 'experts' suggest! The consensus at present is low-fat, high-carb, but I know I do better on the opposite to that and always have done. Fortunately I never jumped on the low-fat bandwagon - or the... -
ARCHIVED Anyone React To Dates (like In Larabars)?
AliB replied to rubyred's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Dates, although tasty, are a very concentrated sugar hit to the body, albeit a natural one - raisins the same, but less so. If SIBO or Candida is a problem then anything sweet (or high-carb in general) will be problematic. The more of it we eat, the more they grow, and the more we 'nurture' them. Our sweet tooth feeds the beasties................. -
ARCHIVED Where To Get "schooled" On Soy Intolerance?
AliB replied to David's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
David, I concur with 'Mushroom'. We didn't mean to be 'heavy' on this but we have been there, done it, and bought a whole heap of T-shirts! There are no easy answers. How we all wished that someone could just say 'do this or that and you will be better'. In reality of course, it doesn't work like that. The Medical Profession would have it that you... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
When I started the SCD I was on Blood Pressure tablets and had been for about 6 years or so. Within a few weeks I started getting dizzy on standing and realised that my BP was lowering. I spoke to the Doctor and she said to keep taking them, but I didn't like the dizziness so after a week or so I stopped taking them. I haven't needed them since. I... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just picked this interesting bit of information up from a diabetic forum. Open Original Shared Link I have to say that during the last set-back it was taking the coconut oil that seemed to make a big difference to my digestion. I have never jumped on the 'low-fat' bandwagon - simply because I felt that it was wrong to exclude fats from the diet... -
ARCHIVED Possible Or Practical To Get Doctor
AliB replied to David's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Oh Pells, I agree. What Doctors have done for me and mine over the years I could write on a postage stamp - in fact they have done far more damage than good. Not to say there aren't some good ones out there, but it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack and unlike over there in the States where you have some kind of say in who you see, we don't... -
ARCHIVED Possible Or Practical To Get Doctor
AliB replied to David's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just concur with all the others David. You will not get a proper diagnosis at this point and even if you did where would it get you? You would have to ensure that you ate a gluten-free diet for life. As you already know that gluten affects you, then the situation is no different. I think many of us worry about things like Cancer, and of course,... -
Many who are intolerant of gluten also have problems with other grains and starches - corn and soy intolerances are very common (so also is dairy although the reaction to that is to the lactose). The oil contains no starch so that may be why you don't react to it. Why not try cutting grains and starches in general for a while, and dairy too if you think...

Matt - if you think that being confined to a diet of meat, fish, poultry, dozens of beautiful veggies and fruits, nuts, and honey is yukky, yuk, yuk, then you really have the 'processed food/junk/rubbish/sugar fix/carb-fest' thing bad! There are hundreds and hundreds of cookery books out there that give thousands of ideas that can be made with those...
-
It could be that the substance that causes the reactions is not present in the oil, but if you are concerned at all why not just change to a different oil, like olive or coconut or something?
-
Oh yes it may well take months to fix - but then it has probably actually taken years to get to this point. Unfortunately we are not always aware of the damage that is being done, only that we get odd health issues that we don't always understand. Things like gas and bloating are usually passed off as 'normal' simply because 'everyone' gets it. It is...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Carbs have been an issue for me for as long as I can remember - I too have struggled with them pretty much all my life. I was told at least 25 years ago that I should eat low-carb and I did - kind of. Although I was a skinny child I was a plump adolescent and never really got rid of it. The weight shot up with my first pregnancy and steadily grew from...
