ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Bea, good to have you 'on board' the thread. If you have been following the thread over the last few pages you will see that one thing we have been discussing is the Liver's role in our health. Certainly I feel that the Liver, and its inability to deal with toxins plays a big part in our health. It struck me the other day that although all of us... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hi Cindy - I think I do react to soy a bit - certainly I used to buy a chocolate soy milk drink from LIDL here in the UK which was pretty yummy but I quickly dropped that because I used to fill up very rapidly with mucous. Because I tend to eat mostly natural foods there is very little in the way of soy that I am likely to have apart from an occasional... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I found that when I was doing the odd day here and there on just fruit and veggie smoothies my digestion seemed to be much happier. I do add quite a lot of water to them so that would help too but the easier a food is to digest the more comfortable I am. I have got out of the habit of having the smoothies and it is one I really ought to get back into... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Confirm Leaky Gut?
AliB replied to helgih88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If your body is supportive to yeasts then you will undoubtedly get some kind of external symptoms. Signs of a 'fungus factory' are things like dandruff and itchy scalp, athlete's foot, thrush, the charmingly named 'jock-itch', fungal nail infections. When we eat more carbohydrates and sugars than our body needs then we inevitably end up encouraging the... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Mysecretcurse, The diet does sound daunting but actually its just like anything - once you get into the routine it is pretty easy. The hardest part is getting your head around the food choices and what you can do with them. We are programmed these days to just 'open a packet and stuff it in' but the diet is more 'grass roots' than that. It is... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What I am wondering now is that although I quite likely needed to supplement back when my gut was really bad because I probably wasn't absorbing very well, now my gut is much better than it was I may actually be overdosing unnecessarily with the vitamins. It has to be much better to get the nourishment from food than from synthetic vitamins. Because... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think Jan that it can depend totally on us as individuals whether and what we react to. It could just be that your liver cannot process the normal by-products of consuming lentils for some unfathomable reason. The fact that you have said in your signature that you have suffered with fairly obvious 'poisoning' symptoms for years must indicate that your... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Hippo - welcome to the thread. It is very common to feel pretty horrible for a few days. There may well be a load of die-off going on of the unwanted beasties - yeasts and microbes - in your gut. I think most of us have experienced similar situations to a greater or lesser degree. It does get better. It can take some weeks for everything to really... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, Jan, I found that butter was the one thing that I could tolerate all the way through. Mind you, I have today been out and bought some organic butter - more expensive, but I have just re-read Arabella Melville's 'Persistent Fat and How To Lose It' book (23 years old but still very relevant) and one of the points it highlights is that fat is a toxin store... -

Hmm. How organic is organic?? I am sure they find ways of getting around it sometimes, and then if they are buying stuff in from other producers, how can they guarantee that there aren't any residues or anything in them? Most non-organic dried fruit is sprayed with mineral oil (probably highly polluted) and sulphites - I am coming around more and more... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hi Michelle. I have been doing some research on toxins and the fact that fat is a toxin store. Some like me may well have a weight problem - these days I find it difficult to shift weight and I definitely have a lot of toxins floating about in my body at the moment - my lymph glands keep swelling up which is a sure sign. I think that sometimes even... -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain Since gluten-free/some Good Advice Needed
AliB replied to penny-s's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I beg to differ on the fats issue. Try reading Gary taubes' 'Good Calories, Bad Calories'............. Contrary to popular opinion, many, both professional and lay people are coming around to realising that it is not fat that makes you fat, but carbs. In the laws of thermodynamics it is not what you take in, but the kind of food you take in and how... -
ARCHIVED Nwbie Needs Help For Unexplained Gi Issues
AliB replied to katie may's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What has done more than anything to help my GI issues and Candida is to radically cut my carb intake. Most gluten-free foods are unfortunately typically higher in carbs than gluten foods so unless you are off all grains, starches, sugar and most dairy gluten-free is not always the answer for many. You may need to have a little extra protein and more fats... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hey all! I found this and it makes very interesting reading - especially the section on Crohn's and the mention of gluten intolerance. It is a whole chapter of a book abridged on the BTVC website - for those who are prepared to read it all, it may well give you more insight into why the SCD works and why gluten-free alone, for many, doesn't. Ali. ... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Sherry, my bloating is worse in the evenings and the early night. I was getting the pressure build up like I had before that was squashing everything and I could feel my liver pressed against my back - heart banging away and a shivering attack again the night before last. What I had changed was to having yogurt with some fruit and nuts for breakfast... -

Sudden Spells Of Extreme Sleepiness When Glutened
AliB replied to raisin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have come to this thread rather late in the day as I wasn't posting anywhere but the SCD thread for a while, but it is very interesting. I didn't have narcolepsy, but I used to get periods where I would just become so fatigued that it would take all my effort not to lay down wherever I was. I have now realised that it was my digestion that was the problem... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Rhoger. There are a few things you can try. It does seem to be fairly common - all the 'experts' say that we need plenty of roughage to help keep the bowels moving, but I found that although I was having plenty of roughage it wasn't working - roughage on its own is not the answer. What is working for me is the higher fat intake. I think that carbs... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Out There A Morbidly Obese Celiac?
AliB replied to ts1986's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was very obese before going gluten free. I lost some because my digestion was so bad I could hardly eat anything, but although I hoped that dropping the gluten was the key to weight loss, it didn't happen. The thing is, I was told years ago that I should eat low-carb, and whilst I did, I would lose weight and feel great, but as others have said, it... -
I hoped that the weight would fall off after going gluten-free, but it didn't happen. What has made a huge difference now is eating low-carb and higher fat. As a gluten-intolerant diabetic I am very aware of the foods that affect my blood sugar. Carbs drive blood sugar. Blood sugar drives insulin. Insulin is the fat-laying hormone. It turns carbs...

ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia And Food/proton Pump Inhib
AliB replied to Ivy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Whilst some settle down after removing gluten and are perfectly ok, there are many for whom gluten alone is not the answer. Whilst other foods can cause reactions, often they typically are other carbohydrates, like corn or soy products. I believe that when you remove one carb source, like wheat and other gluten-grains, for some, certain bacteria within... -
ARCHIVED Restless Leg When I'm Tired
AliB replied to glutenfreejenny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had chronic RLS before going gluten-free and afterwards it stopped. Now I only get it if I get glutened. What I did realise is that it was to do with my digestion, and particularly my colon. I do wonder if the colon bulges (diverticuli?) at certain points and impacts on the nerves in the spinal column here and there. It may be that it is exacerbated... -
ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia And Food/proton Pump Inhib
AliB replied to Ivy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I picked up this article by Scott that may be of interest to anyone with Fibromyalgia. My Husband has been a lot better since going gluten-free. I have just started him on an elimination type diet and am interested to see if it will make any difference. https://www.celiac.com/articles/118/1/Elimi...lgia/Page1.html -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have been trawling through the forum on Diabetes co uk which is very interesting - especially the section on low-carbing. The thing is that I have known for years that I should eat a low carb diet and on the occasions I did I would always feel better, but it was so hard to stick to. Now, of course, I have been forced to eat low-carb, which is essentially... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hi Jan. I tried to PM you about the Liver cleanse but that facility seems to have been denied to me. I thought I had PM'd you in the past with my email address but can't remember. Whilst you and I are perfectly sure that it is appropriate as a support to the healing benefit of the diet others may not agree with that so it is probably not wise to post...
