  3. Nicole, Curcumin has TNF blocking action without being unduly immunosuppressive. I wonder if it would work for ulcerative colitis?
  4. I have bee gluten-free for at least 2 and a half years now. And I really miss broccoli casserole, and green bean casserole. Of course both those recipes use the Durkee french fried onion rings which are definitely NOT gluten free. Don't you just wish the Durkee company would wise up?!So I was absolutely delighted when I found a new product on the shelves...
  5. I say Kudos to General Mills. I used to eat Campbell's Soups, but they have told me that not a single one of their soups is gluten-free, and despite emails from me encouraging them to convert their soups to gluten-free status (any soup without pasta or barley can be made gluten-free without a significant change in taste or texture), they have refused to do...
  6. I recently learned that Triumph Dining has made an iPod/iPhone application based on their wonderful "Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping Guide." I thought, "How Wonderful!" and promptly bought it from the iTunes.com web site. Now I have this wonderful reference with me at the grocery store without having to lug a book along. But, you know what? Now that I've been...
  7. Recently, noticing that the Mt. Olive pickles contain flavoring, or natural flavoring, I wrote a letter asking whether their flavoring contains any derivatives of rye or barley, even if it doesn't contain any wheat. Here's the letter I got back from them:__________________________________________Hallie, thanks for your note. Our QC folks followed up with...
  8. Celiac.com 10/02/2009 - My hubby and I just returned from a wonderful 5 days in Florida’s Key West, and so I want to write about it while it is fresh in my memory, for I think my experience may benefit others who are trying to stay g...
  9. I received this letter today from Lawry's: Lawry's September 2, 2009 Dear Ms. Davis: Per your request we are sending a letter in addition to our email response, in reference to questions about your gluten inquiry. We are writing to clarify your concerns about our ingredient statements. In our initial response, our language about rye and...

    Lawry's?

Here is a letter to me from Lawry's, received today: Lawry's September 2, 2009 Dear Ms. Davis: Per your request we are sending a letter in addition to our email response, in reference to questions about your gluten inquiry. We are writing to clarify your concerns about our ingredient statements. In our initial response, our language about rye...
  11. Celiac.com 08/18/2009 - Many of you know that DQ8 is one of the two major genes which may lead to celiac disease. You may also know that Open Original Shared Link. What you may not know is that DQ8 may be the direct cause of these other...
  12. Me too! Count me in! I'm gluten-free, but also have primary biliary cirrhosis. Would love to have beer and wine without the repercussions to the liver.
  13. Today I found out that wheat flour caulked barrels is not the only possible gluten contamination of wine. Some wineries add to the wine something called a "fining agent" to clarify and stabilize the wine. Wheat gluten isolate is one of the fining agents that is sometimes used! I think we need to develop a list of wineries that NEITHER use such...
  14. I sent a Open Original Shared Link and their derivatives in the list of Common Allergens that require disclosure in labeling. The following letter was sent by me today in response to one received from Barbara Schneeman at the FDA:Barbara O. Schneeman, DirectorOffice of Nutrition, Labeling and Dietary SupplementsCenter for Food Safety and Applied NutritionHarvey...
  15. You may have recently seen my blog asking for comments on my FDA petition to have FDA add rye and barley to the list of most common allergens that require disclosure on food labeling. The fact that FDA added wheat to that list without adding rye and barley is total idiocy, for as we know we are all just as allergic to the gluten of rye and barley as we are...
  16. I am 61 but occasionally I take college courses, and I can tell you that our local community college cafeteria has gluten in just about EVERYTHING! I have written gluten-free suggestions to them numerous times, but they don't make any changes. About the only thing I can safely eat there is a piece of fresh fruit, one of the salads that has no croutons, and...
  17. As an untreated celiac your risk of death is twice that of the normal population. See https://www.celiac.com/articles/148/1/Celia...ated/Page1.html
  18. I've been there, and I love it. I especially like the triple combo, which is guacamole, hummus, and artichoke dip or seed pate. I just ask for more of the first two and make it a double combo. If you tell them you're gluten-free they will take care to substitute more 100% corn chips, and celery sticks for the usual pita bread.
  19. Yes, Tamiflu is gluten-free according to Open Original Shared Link .
  20. Slow stomach emptying can also be a sign of scleroderma which can go along with celiac disease. Ask for the ANA test, and if it is positive, regardless of staining pattern, demand the anticentromere B test which is specific for the most common form of scleroderma. My diagnosis was delay because other autoimmune disease was masking the ANA anticentromere staining...
  21. I have the DQ8 gene. Also have CREST scleroderma. the skin on my lower legs is exceedingly dry and flakey. When I put on dark socks, the flakes form dust all over them. It is a problem I have had for years. Ask you child's doc to run the ANA test on her. If it is positive, with any staining pattern whatsoever, demand the anticentromere B test which is highly...
  22. CREST scleroderma is the most common form of scleroderma, and unfortunately the docs usually do not do the anticentromere B test to check for it, if the ANA staining pattern is other than anticentromere. In my case the ANA pattern was speckled, homogeneous or nucleolar, and only once was it anticentromere. So my docs did not do the anticentromere B test....
  23. I have both the DQ8 gene and CREST scleroderma. My recent anti-centromere B test came through quite positive, and this test is supposed to be over 98% specific for CREST scleroderma. Since this is a progressive disease, it can be assumed that the other 2% will eventually develop at least 2 of the 5 signs needed to diagnose it when these antibodies are positive...
  24. After I wrote that last blog entry, I went to my local Giant Food store and there on the shelf was a box of Corn Chex marked "Gluten-free"! So distribution is ahead of schedule!
  25. Probably all of you know that General Mills has reformulated Rice Chex to make it gluten-free. The new and wonderful news was that this apparently turned out profitable enough that they are now in the process of reformulating other Chex cereals. Here is the letter from them that I received today:Dear Valued Consumer: Thank you for contacting General Mills...
