  1. I think you're a good case for the point that everyone is different Casein intolerance IS a big stumbling block for the SCD diet... it means you can't have cheese or yogurt, which are in a LOT of recipes in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." So... here's what I would recommend. As far as grains go, I would keep eating rice (especially brown rice for...
  2. If you can heal a little bit you might be able to eat nuts again. Some intolerances occur just because your intestines are injured. Like dairy products, for example... a lot people with celiac disease have problems with lactose intolerance, but after a few months they start making the enzyme lactase again and dairy is OK. Mercury in fish IS a valid concern...
  3. IMO, carbs are really overrated as a source of nutrients and calories. They can be stored easily (which makes them cheap and well-suited to heavy processing), but until about 15,000 years ago humans lived off meat, fruit, vegetables, nuts, fermented dairy products, and a few simple sugars like honey. Healthy fats (fish, lean meat, nuts, avocados) could...
  4. If you're reacting to a lot of different foods, have you thought about trying something like the SCD or a strict elimination diet (in cooperation with a nutritionist or a naturopathic doctor)? That could really give your body a chance to heal. You might also run some tests for vitamin and mineral deficiencies (especially iron, ferritin, calcium, potassium...
  5. I cut the obvious sources of corn out of my diet... corn chips, corn cakes, corn bread, corn on the cob, corn cereal... I was already avoiding corn syrup because it has no nutritional value and tricks your body into thinking you're still hungry. I haven't checked my supplements for corn starch or started avoiding derivatives like citric acid. I was surprised...
  6. Welcome to the group! I'm sorry you're having such a tough time finding new foods for your son to eat!! My son is younger (eight months), but he's really sensitive to casein and gags on just about everything. So far I've only found a few things that he'll open his mouth for after the first bite: rice cereal, "summer vegetables," chicken (mixed with the...
  7. For what it's worth... Enterolab doesn't do its own genetic analysis. They send the swabs to Bonfils. I know you can't diagnose anything on genetics alone, but I find it extremely useful to know my genes. It gave me the opportunity to look up peer-reviewed scholarship on conditions that have been linked to DQ8 and DQ7... now I have a better idea of what...
  8. Lactose-free could help, but you might want to give casein-free a try for a few months. That's the protein in cow's milk... it's hard for a lot of people to digest and it's in all dairy products. Then if you want to reintroduce products without much lactose (hard cheese, yogurt) first, you can tell if casein is a problem for you or lactose or hopefully...
  9. Have you checked for any other autoimmune disorders? They often cluster together. Depending on what kind of joint pain you have it could be rheumatoid arthritis or lupus (SLE). RA makes you really stiff in the morning and gives you symmetrical joint pain (both knees, for example). SLE is more likely to cause aches in the small joints of your hands, feet...
  10. I had to take dairy out of diet because I'm breastfeeding and my son is very sensitive to casein. Last week I got the results from my genetic test... one interesting thing I found out is that the DQ7 gene is associated with intolerance to both gluten and cow's milk (plus thyroid disorders, lupus, and pollen allergies). Dairy is not an easy food to...
  11. I do eat a little bit of meat, but here are three of my favorite Gluten-free Casein-free meals: 1. Tinkyada pasta with lots of vegetables... tomatoes, zucchini, spinach, mushrooms, eggplant... whatever you have on hand. Just saute the vegetables in olive oil and stir the pasta in when it's done. Most of my fresh herbs have been killed by the frost...
  12. Have you ever tried Emergen-C? It won't get rid of a cold, but it might give your immune system a boost so you can fight it off quicker. I've also taken Vitamin C tablets with rose hips. I usually get at least two or three colds every year... I'm hoping my immune system will work better now that it's not being overwhelmed with dairy, gluten, and corn...
  13. I'm sorry you're struggling with this! Infertility and pregnancy loss can definitely be a problem for women with autoimmune disorders for all kinds of reasons. One thing I can recommend is the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It teaches you how to figure out if you're ovulating, making enough good-quality cervical mucus, whether...
  14. Hey... just wanted to update this thread. Just before Halloween I asked to be tested for heavy metals. I was curious about the fact that my daughter's lead level went down after she stopped breastfeeding... even though I caught her chewing on a lead weight! (It was in some old drapes that came with our house... ugh). Anyway... they also ran a CBC...
  15. How about grits? They can be sweet (maple syrup, honey, agave) or savory (cheese, fried onions). My all-time favorite is cheese grits with jalapeno peppers for a little kick. Yum! They're very easy to make... it's basically "cream of wheat" except made of corn. My dad and sister are both picky eaters. They're really affected by the texture...
  16. I've read about hypERthyroidism going into remission... and postpartum thyroiditis... how about autoimmune hypOthyroidism? I'd love to read an article about a gluten-free connection if one turns up.
  17. Did they also test your total IgA? If it's really low, you'll get negative results on the blood test no matter how much gluten you eat. At this point you could pursue genetic testing. If you don't have the DQ2 or DQ8 gene your chances of having celiac disease are very small. Or just stay off gluten... it can cause all kinds of autoimmune problems...
  18. My hair loss was like that too... no clumps, but a LOT was coming out in the shower. The first time it happened I was 17 and studying abroad in Germany. My host mother was horrified at the amount of hair I was losing all over the bathroom floor... she told me I better ask a doctor about it. Ditto for the periods, but things improved after my first pregnancy...
  19. The definition of celiac disease is that your immune system is attacking your intestines. A celiac panel looks for the antigens that cause the destruction (Ttg and EMA). I tested negative... maybe because I had already been off gluten for five weeks, maybe because I had some other problem (IBS, colitis, etc...) instead of celiac disease There's no way...
  20. Welcome to the group! I have two thoughts for you... 1. Hemoglobin is the iron circulating in your red blood cells. Ferritin is the iron you have in storage. So it definitely IS possible to have low ferritin and normal hemoglobin... 30 is pretty low for ferritin. Have you considered taking your supplement with acid for better absorption? Orange...
  21. What if you have an infection (like candidiasis) AND your thyroid is a bit low? That could explain the normal body temperature and abnormal symptoms. Your symptoms do sound more like hypothyroid... fatigue, dry eyes, irritability, brittle nails. Have you noticed any hair loss? Heavy, irregular periods? Not everyone has exactly the same experience, but...
  22. I used to eat quite a bit of cheese, but I had to give it up so I could keep breastfeeding my casein-intolerant son. Maybe I would feel satisfied if I ate a little more fat... looks like I need to go buy some nuts and some licorice tea I love avocados too, but it's hard to find good ones at this time of year in the Midwest.
  23. Do you have other symptoms of Graves' disease... sweating, palpitations, anxiety, insomnia? A slightly high body temperature could also indicate chronic infection. If your temperature changes a lot throughout the day, you might have an adrenal problem (autoimmune or caused by chronic stress)... have you been checking your temperature throughout the...
  24. Oh yeah... licorice tea is supposed to be good for sugar cravings. I just couldn't drink it while I was pregnant. I'm going to make myself a cup tonight! Testing my blood sugar is an interesting idea... diabetes runs in my family too. Can you get a device without a prescription? What kind of numbers are appropriate?
  25. I'll do that! My libido HAS been pretty low. I have an appointment with a new GYN in April (she's supposed to be really good) and I'm planning to talk to her about it if things haven't improved.
