  1. Another thought about stuffed turkey and eating the meat on the outside, if they use a cooking bag instead of basting, the bag instructins reccomend that you coat the inside of the cooking bag with 2T of flour. -Kate
  2. I always used to take my own ham for the family to enjoy when we went to the family for Thanksgiving. Now that I do Thanksgiving dinner, I cook the turkey & ham since everyone has fallen in love with the tradition. I would also suggest you make a small amount of gluten-free dressing for your daughter - my boys would be heart-broken if they were not able...
  3. I did my own elemination diet challenge for lactose years ago and I don't think I did the complete eliminiation since I now how much it is in - however, if I were to do a challenge for lactose today, I would eliminate EVERYTHING with lactose, including many breads which have dried milk or butter added. I cold tell immediately when I re-introduced milk back...
  4. We cook breakfast meat on the weekends and then just fix eggs and some rice bread with jam for each day and re-heat the meat. -Kate
  5. OK, so you have the results - did you learn anything new or was it more of a confirmation... I ask this because I am also considering ordering the test. I have discovered a LOT of my own intolerances but I think I may still be missing some things. My allergist and PCP will NOT because they say they only point to broad spectrum and are not specific or reliable...
  6. No, I was concerned that a lot of the allergy baby formulas would be soy based or would include soy...I can look. Thanks...
  7. Per Bette Hagman's bread book, I have been using Almond Meal as a replacement for dried milk but have since discovered that I don't only have problems with peanuts but also almonds. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knew what would happen if I left that ingredient out of my bread baking (or if someone has a suitable alternative)...outside of altering my...
  8. I take all my own food - stop by a grocery store and pick something up you can cook when you get there. My grandmother was the same way when she was alive. She thought it was all in our heads - my dad, her son, is diabetic and she would just roll her eyes, make funny noises, strange comments and we would move on and go to where we could eat anyway. ...

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

I went gluten-free 8-12 weeks before being tested, my GI doc only took 3 samples and he just said no to celiac disease. I do however, have ALL the symptoms. My oldest son was given the blood test (due to stomach problems and his doc automaticlly ran the test when I told him my problems) which came back negative. I live gluten, corn, soy bean, peanut,...
  10. Thanks anyway - you would just be surprised at the items with corn syrup -Kate

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

I have had problems on-and-off my whole life, one-four at at time and my new doc suggested I try taking B vitamins suplements and after a couple of months, it has helped me...doesn't mean they won't come back but right now, I am enjoying a sore-free mouth. -Kate
  12. Very good to know...I always cook turkey and ham at Thanksgiving and have ordered my "completely free from anything" fresh Amish turkey, thinking I would just serve just that this year - the whole house was in an uproar so now I need the ham. Richard, do you know of any of the gluten-free hams are spiral sliced are corn free too? That could really narrow...
  13. I do make my own chicken broth regularly, very similar to how you say. However, I attempted to make some beef broth and it just didn't turn out--at all. I gave it to my dog who actually LOVED it! I had used a chuck roast on the "opinion" of the grocery meat cutter - I talked to a real butcher this time and he said to use the beef ribs instead. Just boil...
  14. Has anyone made their own beef broth? I found a canned broth in the natural foods section of the grocery store (can't remember the brand) that appeared to be completely safe for all my food intolerances and I still got sick (I used to use french onion soup for my crock pot base). I cannot use Lipton soup mix due to other food intolerances and this would really...
  15. Our house is mixed (husband and 3 kids are NON gluten-free). Most main dishes are gluten-free but we usually have a mix of side dishes. The whole family is aware of cross-contaminiation issues and if a serving spoon for the gluten-free food accidentally touches non-gluten-free food, we replace it with a new spoon. The counter top is cleaned A LOT! My motto...
  16. I have most of those same problems...howeever, I do eat meat so I have some at each meal, very plain--Bette Hagman's books seem very good for allergic people and she has suggestions for alternative ingredients. I checked them out from the local library and have now asked for them for Christmas from my family. -Kate
  17. Breads made with Bette Hagman's bread book (only the ones I can find the flour for though) - real pizza - first time I have eaten pizza in almost 6 years w/o getting sick--no cheese please! -Kate
  18. Along this same topic, I just called my pharmasist and he is going to find the manufacturers phone numbers for all my meds for me so that I can call them directly - since he is unsure if any/all my meds are gluten-free (and CF, L-CF, TNF, SF, etc.). -Kate

    ARCHIVED Kissing

Ditto - if my husband is drinking beer then no kissing until he has switched to water for the evening. If he hasn't brushed his teeth after eating/drinking, I keep it quick and mouth closed. -Kate
  20. Well, the goat's milk info is interesting and would explain my reaction to pumpkin pie made with goat's milk. No soy for me and I already know I am casien intolerant. Thanks...back to rice milk. -Kate
  21. My 2 cents - my lactose/casien intolerance has gone from mild to bad to worse over the last 5 years. Even with lactose tablets - I now avoid it completely, just like all the other foods that make me sick. I have switched to goat's milk too, although I am still adjusting to the taste, like I had to adjust to soy milk when I switched to that years ago which...
  22. I am testing food now to ensure it tastes as close to "normal" as possible for us and my husbands' family. Tonight, I am testing gluten-free, rice break dressing with homemade chicken broth! I will probably break down and include white flour rolls unless anyone can suggest a really good receipe for me to use that doesn't require some of those hard-to-find...
  23. Oooh...no I have not seen this yet. Thanks!!! I have only been gluten-free for about 2-3 months now and am trying to expand my cooking wings again. Wow! You have no IDEA how this will help. Thanks again! -Kate
  24. I agree with everyone - use vinegar since it should be gluten-free except for those noted above - that said, I am one of those people that cannot use any vinegar. I have tried ALL of them (I think). If he has a similar problem, you can squeeze fresh lemons with black pepper on a salad and it gives it a nice zest - and you can order that out. -Kate
  25. I am looking for a pumpkin pie crust receipe that does NOT use butter or Crisco sicne I cannot have soy, corn, gluten (I have gluten-free receipe that I can convert to non-corn but it still calls for Crisco or butter/margarine), lactose/casien (goats milk is OK), or vinegar. Also, I am trying to make this as invisible as possible for Thanksgiving...
