  1. When I go out for a dinner, I usually eat ahead of time and then take a snack to eat with the meal. Veggies, chips, snack bar, and I usually eat salad at the event too...depending on the event/location you decide how/what you want to take. To my boss's house for dinner, I wouldn't take a bag of chips, however, an family event that was not too dressy, anything...
  2. Per popular opinion, all vinegars are fine for celiac disease - you should only be really concerned if you have problems with yeast.
  3. I eliminated ALL non-gluten-free flours from my kitchen but we buy gluten items for the rest of the family (of 5) occasionally (such as bread, box mac & cheese, frozen pizza - homemade we use my crust, etc.) and I clean, clean, clean, and lecture the kids and husband if I see them just dusting their hands off - spreading those crumbs all over...they need...
  4. I went to Red Lobster in Bloomington Indiana on New Year's Eve 2004 (not my idea) without calling ahead and got this GREAT waiter--and I cannot remember his name. I explained that I had many food "problems" and if he could feed me, that would be great, if not, then I would just order a salad. He went back, worked with the chef (while I worked with the...
  5. I found that I have to avoid all corn syrup (Extra gum has none) but can tollerate small amounts of Corn Starch (in meds if can't be avoided) if I have to... For foods W/O corn syrup, you have to look in the health food section. I use Muir (sp?) for spaghetti sauce and pizza sauce. Corn syrup is in EVERYTHING. Even at the health food stores, watch what...
  6. According to York labs Open Original Shared Link an intolerance is a different "level" of allergy but an intolerance won't show up with traditional allergy testing. None of my docs will support the findings saying they are too broad but I know almost everyone on these boards swear by them.
  7. I just accidentlly "got glutened" for the first time since August 2004 - we were having sandwhiches, and not wanting to leave me out of the whole thing, I planned to make my own bread, well, I got busy and forgot to bake it. So, I made my bread, popped it into the oven, then ran into the health food store because there was no way mine would be ready in time...
  8. Thanks...will try.
  9. My reward is the good food I eat/drink even when we are pinching pennies everywhere else. The kids can't buy chips unless they are on sale, I get OJ whenever I want to, I get the good chips, I only eat the best meats (the cheap ones make me sick so the rest of the family gets those), etc. and everyone understands - most of the time.
  10. I miss cornbread - anyone know of a substitution for corn meal? Also, just found passover Mayo made W/OUT vinegar!!!! Now I can have salads again (chicken salad, deviled eggs, etc.)!!!!! I bought one jar, tested to see if my body would tolerate, and then went back and bought th rest they had on-hand because I wasn't sure if they would carry it the rest...
  11. An elephant ear is a greasy, fried, blob of bread, covered with cinnamon sugar. Sounds really icky, tastes really good; wouldn't miss a fair without one before this...
  12. At the county fair - an elephant ear! I was sick for days and days...I ate the whole thing and wouldn't let anyone else touch it!
  13. I run a fever when I eat something I shouldn't by accident, usually yeast, but not always. I ended up in the hospital for days with all kinds of tests that didn't show anything wrong. They finally let me out when my fever went away on it's own. I used to run a fever for weeks at a time.
  14. That was me too so I gave up all corn products (there weren't many left at this point) for about a week and then tried them again in a very plain meal. It was immediate. I can tell within 15 minutes when I accidentally eat something with corn - same as gluten.
  15. My diet consists "mostly" of: - Plain meat (salt/pepper/garlic/herbs/lemon) - Plain veggies (ditto) We only use olive oil (100% pure) at home. I eat meat and veggies at every meal. I add in potatoes or rice for lunch and dinner. Snacks are carrots, rice crackers, potato chips made in canolla, sunflower, olive oil. That is the bulk of my diet. We add...
  16. Most of the vodka's I found are made from grain and DO make me sick. I haven't tried the potato vodka yet. I have similar problems and CAN drink Rum and Tequilla - however, I make my own mix with lemon/lime and mix the rum with tea. These are the ONLY two I have found that don't bother me - give them a try and it is now margarita season!!!! Perfect for...
  17. When I order plain hamberger or chicken, I request a freshly washed skillet, no oil except olive oil - NO butter, etc. I tell them I have food issues which they can take to be celiac disease, allergies, or intolerances. I have yet to have to explain to get my food the way I want - most servers intrepret as allergies which is fine with me - what do I care...
  18. I eat out several times a month and react to very small amounts of most foods I am intolant to...we avoid busy times - both because we hate the crouds and I am more concerned with contaminiation. I have no problem ordering with all my restrictions, I have my resturaunts (sp) that I have called and cleared and I still enjoy eating out. I have really only gotten...
  19. Now, I know I am in the minority with the thought process I will express - celiac disease means DO NOT EAT GLUTEN - it will damage your body! However, I have yet to see where celiac disease means you have to elimiate soy, dairy, etc. because of the same problem. My comment is this: If your body is not reacting to these other foods (test the problem with...
  20. I am the only one in our house of 5 and while we have a "mostly" gluten-free house, we keep stuff like regular mac & cheese and frozen pizzas for the kids and hubby. All condiments are off limits to me so those are no problem with cross contamination. We also keep "normal" bread on hand (for the cost issue) which you have to watch. Anyway, I can go for...
  21. Wow, I have had those for years but now take 1,000 mg of calcium a day (no dairy) and they are gone!!! I never noticed... I was also having problems, after the spots, with pits and ridges/vertical lines and she recommended vitamin C and my nails are improving - I just upped my dose from 500 to 1,000 per day (I take one of each in the morning and evening...
  22. Oh, one more note, my new PCP who suspected celiac disease also ran all the tests for thyroid, lupus, basically almost any blood test you can run and the only thing she discovered is I may develop diabeties - now am pre-diabetic.
  23. I told my docs that I refused to go back on gluten after being gluten-free for 3-4 months for a EGD. I do NOT have a formal dx and a lot of people on this board to NOT. There are things you can do, try an elimiation diet (just PLAIN meat and PLAIN veggies, PLAIN potatoes, and PLAIN rice) - salt & pepper should be OK. Anyway, after a week of that,...
  24. My PCP wants me to see a RA-MD but due to all the other changes I had been dealing with, I said, no. My RA Factor test came back neg. however, she said that could change with time. I was all on my left side but now my right side is "catching up" and I think I am going to have to add a new doc to my list of specalists. I keep denying it...it will go away,...
  25. My doc used to think I was catching pink eye from the kids but I then discovered an OTC allergy eye drop and found that helped, even if it burned a little. I now use a prescription eye drop. It's worth a try... Hey, I am on plain meat and veggie diet too...along with potatoes. If I gave up my potatoes, I would probably drop weight like a rock!!!
