  1. I am the only one in our house of 5 and I have a gluten-free pantry (the new house had 2), a "safe for Kate" shelf in the fridge and I clean non-stop. Anytime someone makes something non-gluten-free, there I go, cleaning again. All items are put through the dishwasher except our everyday skillet which we keep strictly gluten-free, all our wooden utensils...
  2. EnjoyLife foods has a dairy free/soy free chocolate chip that can be added to (I forget the name of the brand) brownie mix that tastes just like normal if you don't mind spending a small fortune that I have no problems with and I am very sensitve to soy. I even found it in one of my hand lotions and had to give that up. Watch out for soups - only homemade...
  3. I have found the only drinks not distilled from grains are potato vodka, tequilla, brandy, and rum - in addition to rest mentioned here. The shnapps I have looked at is distilled from grain and I think Triple Sec is distilled from fruit. I cannot drink ANY drinks distilled from ANY grains. I also cannot tolerate yeast which rules out wine, champaign, and...
  4. I have problems with gluten-free foods if I eat too much of one thing. One or two I can handle, half a pan of brownies will make me sick for days. Even when all the products in the brownies are perfectly safe for me to eat. The lesson, don't overdo and don't wait too long to satisfy your sweet tooth!!!!
  5. The Enjoy Life Web site has a great selection and worth the cost of shipping if you cannot find the products locally. I, personally, love their stuff...mainly because it tastes good and is perfectly safe to eat. However, I do NOT care for their chewy snack bars but that is personal choice.
  6. I agree, try and elimination diet...go to just basics, fresh/not frozen meat, no lunch meat, plain fruit & veggies for a week or two, see how you do and start adding stuff back in slowly to check your bodies reaction. Keep a diary of food and reactions which is a real pain but works. Also, you can eat out if you keep the food simple. It may be...
  7. So, you have tried the rice and/or apple vinegars and can tolerate them OK? If yes, you can usually find mustard made from cider vinegar at the health food store. I never saw a mayo without regular vinegar but you can make your own with a vinegar that you can tolerate and it isn't that difficult. I did find one that was a passover mayo made with asorbic acid...
  8. I also had problems with turkey until I switched to organic, fresh from the butcher shop, fresh from the farm (confirmed), etc. Many comercial turkey's have lactose added to help with browning when whole. I react to ANY broth products and do not trust anything with broth at ALL. I make all my own broth now and all my own soups/stews/etc. I stopped...
  9. I stopped at a Max & Erma's past Lexington heading south/west at an exit with a mall...sorry I can't remember exactly where but if you check out Max & Erma's, they should be able to tell you how to get there. I went in, chatted with the manager and they said they were willing to cook my food in its own skillet - they have butter that goes on the...
  10. I generally cut up baked or grilled chicken breasts, add onions, bell peppers, black olive slices, passover mayo, celery, and mix (other things you could add would be nuts, grapes, diced tomatoes, etc. anything your can imagine).
  11. There are "some" breads that do not have any yeast but you really have to look. Kinikicks (sp????) has a mix, at least that is who I think makes it, that takes similar to regular bread. Well, as regular as we ever get. Also, I just found an allergy cookbook that calls for unbuffered Vitamin C crystals, in addition to another levening agent, can be used to...
  12. I really like the cereals, I like the hard cruchy bars but don't care for the gooy other bars (the ones you can buy online), and I like their very small cookies. Nice for a just a taste of something sweet which is about all I can eat anyway, 2 do me nicely. I think once you don't have a lot of stuff, this stuff starts to taste much better. I think they...
  13. Thanks for the hint on Yosemite, we are planning a trip there next summer. Also for the eggs out...never thought to ask for real eggs before; luckily we don't eat breakfast out except occasionally at a health food place in town.
  14. I shop almost exclusively at Marsh, except for some products like Enjoy Life, Chebe, etc. and I am able to purchase most of my food from there (except for my rice or almond milk)...they have a much bigger selection of natural products (including carrying rice dream ice cream that I can "sometimes" eat) than our Kroger in town and are working to see if they...
  15. Jen, will that include the other Indiana Marsh's? Like in Bloomington? Thanks...

    ARCHIVED Questions!

My kids pediatrition automatically did the blood test on my boys--based ONLY on my elimimination diet findings, negative. My mother and sister have identical symptoms and problems I had before I went gluten-free but refuse to try the diet or be tested, despite the fact that maternal grandmother was most likely celiac (same symptoms) and my maternal aunt is...
  17. I usually call in advance except to a few known places. However, I have traveled without calling and had fine experiences. I don't know if California has Max and Erma's (or Chili's) but they are willing to cook food in a clean skillet and keep it away from bread, etc. Just tell the waiters/managers that you daughter is alergic, it cuts out the confusion and...

    ARCHIVED Soy Allergy?

My soy reactions are similar to my gluten reactions and I cannot tolerate ANY. I accidentially used a minced garlic without checking the ingredients and was horribly sick so I checked the one thing that had changed and it contained soy oil. I switched back to my regular crushed garlic that does NOT contain any oil now that I know!!!
  19. My EGD was negative and I refused to go back onto gluten for any blood tests - however, this does NOT mean that you don't have food intolerances. I agree with previous post, go with what you body tells you. My docs all seem pleased that I have found all the foods that bother me, even if I don't have a positive celiac disease dx. I am much happier and healthier...

    ARCHIVED Favorite Sports

I was the lone football vote but I equally love hockey. Last year was horrible, hopefully we will get to see some on TV this year, since they lost their contract with ESPN! I am sure they have to start showing some games at least. Go Colts! (and Dophins because I grew up in Miami, even though they really stink right now) Go Av's!
  21. Be the first to recommend the resturaunt - one that you know you can eat at without any problems, explain that you have some "food allergies" when you order which will explain the way you order and help the wait staff, and while not exactly helping celiac disease out or being the truth, it is simple for everyone to understand and is usually not questioned...
  22. Is the meal in a resturaunt or at a home?
  23. My MIL keeps trying to "cure" me with her medications - her thyroid meds worked wonders for her, why, they should work wonders for me. Never mind the fact that my thyroid has been checked, twice, in the last year and is FINE. Of course, she is also blaming sister-in-law's new cat for their child's (S&BIL) epilipsy seizures. Not to sound like a...
  24. I have had all these symptoms for several years now, I finally started talking to the docs when the fatigue hit...all tests continue to come back negative for lupus (different kinds), rhumatoid arthritis, lyme disease, thyroid, etc. I finally saw a dermatologist due to the rashes and all his tests came back negative too, however, he is treating me for...
  25. Our house is almost completly gluten-free. I yell/remind hubby and kids if they start to prepare ANY food and a drawer is open. I yell/remind hubby and kids if they dust the crumbs off their hands, etc. They now ask if they can use my cutting board for cutting plain veggies. Only big exception is we bought a small regular bag of flour for my step-daughter...
