ARCHIVED Chilli Ingrediants
kabowman replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have developed my own chilli recipe but keep the beans out. I have problems with beans; they make me sick - reactions similar to gluten, I am guessing it is the protien. Also, my oldest son and my husband cramp horribly with beans. -
ARCHIVED Help With Meals
kabowman replied to mamaathome's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Bette Hagman's Gluten Free Gormet Cooks Comfort Foods has a recipe for egg noodles (page 93) that is rice and dairy and gluten free which I use to make my Chicken Noodle Soup. Substitute the corn starch with arrowroot flour. Even people visiting couldn't tell it was gluten-free and my family begs for Chicken Soup every WEEK. If I don't produce that, I... -
ARCHIVED Help With Meals
kabowman replied to mamaathome's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would stick to plain meats and veggies--she is probably accustomed to those and may feel safest. Homemade fruit salad makes a great desert or breakfast. Don't grill unless you use foil and let her know that will be how you are preparing it...I wouldn't trust food from someone elses grill myself. Use a baking dish (not stone) or a dedicated pan...only... -
Vinegar has yeast in the process (I found out after I discovered I can't have yeast) which is why no vinegar if you can't tolerate yeast. I found the vinegar thing first, then the yeast thing. I can't have wine due to the yeast. There is just enough that I can't drink it. What I CAN drink is tequilla in my own homemade limeade mix for margaritas and potato...

My husband's family is doing Thanksgiving at their house this year, I have hosted the last 2 years and they don't like dragging their obnoxious kid to our house because I have rules. Anyway, they won't be making anything I can eat and they refuse to even try. I will be taking my own little bit of, non-Thanksgiving food to re-heat while I am there. I am...

My intolerances have not gone away. I am now more sensitive than I was before. BUT, I feel so much better now that I know what to avoid and what was making me sick. Vinegar has yeast in the process so if you cannot handle yeast that is most likely the problem. I discovered my vinegar problem then discovered my yeast problem and THEN I found out that vinegar...

ARCHIVED Nasal Sprays
kabowman replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thansks for bringing this up. I have two different nasal sprays for my allergies which I try to avoid using since I hate them. I only use them in the spring when I am at my worst (my youngest uses his in the late summer/fall). I will need to check mine - the one I keep at work is Astelin but I keep two at home. I never thought about those!!! -
ARCHIVED Did Your Baby Have Reflux?
kabowman replied to KayJay's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My oldest son had reflux until he was over a year old then it kind of stopped. He does not have a gluten problem but had severe D and cramping if I ate cnnamon or hot dogs (I can't believe I used to eat those nasty things but I did) so I gave those up while he was breast-feeding. He could eat them for a while but he is back to no processed meats and no cinnamon... -
ARCHIVED Results Negative, Family History, And Symptoms
kabowman replied to Hall100's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My celiac disease dx was negative, I never had any blood tests and refused to go on a gluten challenge because I was finally feeling better. My maternal grandmother was gluten intolerant, a maternal aunt is gluten intolerant. My mother and sister have digestive problems but refuse to try the gluten-free lifestyle. My oldest son's blood test was negative... -

ARCHIVED ?
kabowman replied to newo ikkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Monosodium glutamate is MSG. -
I also like the Gluten Free Gourmet Cooks Comfort Foods. I think one of my other cookbooks is the Gluten Free Kitchen which is not too bad and doesn't use flour blends but specific flours. You can also check out your local library to see if there are any there that seem worth buying.

ARCHIVED Celiac?not Sure
kabowman replied to christa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, I forgot - I never had the blood test for celiac disease and was gluten-free for several months before going in for a biopsy which showed no damage. Therefore I do not conclusively have celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Celiac?not Sure
kabowman replied to christa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
After I went completely gluten-free, I was able to start identifying other foods that bothered me too. The bread could be soy or corn or yeast especially if you are having problems with fruit. Which veggies? My sister cannot have nightshades (no potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, etc.)...some people have problems with rice. I had to go to plain meat, in a clean... -
ARCHIVED After You're Gluten Free
kabowman replied to foodphobic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have those symptoms when my blood sugar gets "out of whack" so you may also want to look at the rest of the food you are eating to see if that could be a factor. I don't know what gluten symptoms you had before, but if they are similar, you may also want to double and triple check all the food you are still eating. My son, who was 13 at the time, found... -
ARCHIVED I Started The Gf Diet
kabowman replied to Danijela's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I make sure to have meat and veggies in every meal I eat...really helps and for in between meals, cashew butter on a rice cake or gluten, soy, corn, yeast, etc. free bread that I make. I seem to need heartier snacks during the fall and winter and lighter snackes in the spring and summer. -
I usually take leftovers for lunch and now eat at my desk...I do live close enough I could go home too but I don't. Also, I have called some of the close restuarants (sp???) to find out which ones I could eat at and then sometimes treat myself but go early so they don't have to try to cook something special during a rush time. When we have staff meetings...

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Turkey
kabowman replied to ruddabega's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I order my turkey from the butcher who gets them fresh from a farm. I had him confirm with the farm that NOTHING would be added to the turkey, at all and for the first time in years, I didn't get sick eating a turkey. I just give them a time/date I will be picking up the bird. Something else to worry about, some turkeys have lactose added to them to help... -
ARCHIVED Pecan Pie Made Without Corn Syrup
kabowman replied to kabowman's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use (I think because it has been almost a year and I will have to search my cookbooks) Bette Hagman's Gluten Free Cooks Comfort Foods pie shell receipe - modified to not include vinegar because I cannot tolerate yeast and I have used Palm Shortening in the past but this year will try lard due to some tummy problems that I believe are from the shortening... -
ARCHIVED Gf Non-dairy Dry Milk Powder?
kabowman replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use plain white rice flour in place of non-fat dried milk in the same measurement called for in the recipe. I have NOT noticed any actual difference in the baking process. All the food comes out fine and takes great. -
ARCHIVED Pecan Pie Made Without Corn Syrup
kabowman posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I need a pecan pie receipe without corn syrup. Now, I have found some online I can try (and combine the directions for several to get one I like) - however, I would prefer to have one that is tried and true. If you have one, I would be eternally grateful if you woule either post it here or e-mail me the receipe!!! As a side note-I will replace the... -
Everything sounds like it will work out great. I have had several gluten-free parties/events and nobody even noticed anything different...as long as I didn't serve my cardboard brownies. Mine are horrible!!!

ARCHIVED Was It Too Good To Be True?
kabowman replied to jrom987's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am adding my voice to the corn/soy issues - after going gluten free, I discovered problems with corn and soy both by process of elimination. I can tolerate just enough corn to take my pills but I don't do any more than that in my diet. Soy is even worse for me. I cannot have ANY amount of soy. There are some really good rice pastas out there...see if... -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Turkey
kabowman replied to ruddabega's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For turkey gravy, find out if they use arrowroot flour, cornstarch, or regular flour. The first two should be OK for you to eat--as long as they don't use one spoon for multiple uses therefore contaminating the gravy - my mom always used cornstarch instead of regular flour growing up. Stay away from a gluten stuffing filled turkey. I would ask that they... -
I don't have any reactions to topical gluten and I don't worry about what is in my soap, shampoo, etc. I do, however, pay attention to my hand lotion because I have a bad habit of my fingers getting into my mouth.
