ARCHIVED I Bought A Gf Donut At Wf Yesterday!
SharonF replied to Billygoat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What brand were they? Kinnickkinnick doughnuts are pretty good, I've found. -
ARCHIVED Question Re: Accidental Glutening
SharonF replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
obsessive hand washer here, too. Fix kids' breakfast, wash hands. Pack lunch, wash hands. Clean out crumb tray (you know, I hated the stupid crumb tray in the toaster BEFORE I was diagnosed), wash hands. I go through a lot of soap. -
When there's a scene involving a meal, do you find yourself thinking "Can't eat that...can't eat that...." It takes me out of the story. Very frustrating.

How does one make gluten-free corn bread? -
ARCHIVED How Were You Diagnosed?
SharonF replied to krisb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had diarrhea for, oh, 3 months, so I went to the doctor, got a blood test, which showed elevated something (tTg, I think), so they did the colonoscopy and found the damaged villi. -
That's an interesting comment about the mom who doesn't want to give up her sweets--I guess you mean baked goods? Because I sure haven't given up candy since being diagnosed! Twix bars, sure, but M&Ms are still okay.

ARCHIVED Coping With The Cost Of This Diet...
SharonF replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm the only celiac in my family, and we simply can't afford to have a gluten-free household. The kids don't eat meat, for the most part, and my husband lives on sandwiches. Spaghetti is a favorite, and it's far more cost effective for me to have my own spaghetti and for them to use the $.99 a package American Beauty brand. As for the wraps/tortillas... -
ARCHIVED If You Could Eat Whatever You Wanted And
SharonF replied to rmmadden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Chinese buffet! What a great idea, since it encompasses a lot of things I miss (alas, crab rangoon, I hardly knew ye) Bagels Chocolate chip cookie dough -
You should write a letter to the manager of the restaurant complaining about the server's rudeness. Even the most non-assertive of us can write letters, you don't even have to see anyone! That was completely uncalled for behavior on his part.

ARCHIVED What To Serve As A Side Dish?
SharonF replied to SharonF's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Um--how do I use a mandolin to make potatoes? Isn't that a stringed musical instrument? -
What do you serve as side dishes with your meals? I am fond of the humble spud, but there's only so much you can do with one. Pre-diagnosis we would have often had a muffin or garlic bread or something. I could still serve that stuff to the rest of the family and go without, but I prefer just having one meal. My family doesn't really "do" rice. Between...

ARCHIVED Can You Double Check These Ingredients?
SharonF replied to SharonF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would rather they left the hot pepper out, to be honest. I don't like it so spicy! -
ARCHIVED Can You Double Check These Ingredients?
SharonF posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is in a Chinese dish prepared by my local grocery story, all the ingredients sound OK to me but I was wondering if any of them have hidden pitfalls. Egg white Orange slice Orange peels Corn starch Vinegar Hot pepper Sugar Sesame Oil I realize there's a vinegar controversy; I come down on the side of "vinegar is safe." So I guess the sesame... -
ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here
SharonF replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well now wait a minute, I can see how it would be bothersome to have your grandma feeling sorry for you all the time, but if she's going to whip you up a batch of gluten-free brownies then go ahead and let her! -
Hello fellow Iowans! Iowa Citian here. Holy cow, I had no idea about Biaggis! (Too bad I can't really afford to eat there, anyway.) The Godfathers in Iowa City will also make a gluten-free pizza if you call the day before. I go to Perkins often and get scrambled eggs and hash browns. Sometimes if I tell them I can't have to the toast/muffin...

The Iowa Celiac Conference is in Des Moines next weekend (Sept 24) and I am sooo looking forward to it! I went to my first conference last year, and while the speeches and lectures were very informative, the best part was the FOOD. In the morning there's a gluten-free food fair, and then there's a lunch, and absolutely everything is gluten-free so I don...

ARCHIVED Ahhh! I May Turn Into Am M&m!
SharonF replied to detox's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Smarties are a no no? I didn't realize that. Yeah, it's really not good when one person can down the "pounder" (14 oz) of M&Ms by herself in one day. -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Celiac? Constant Hunger
SharonF replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Shannon, I think everyone else has given you very good advice, I just wanted to tell you that I hope you can figure out a solution and help your daughter out. Those symptoms do sound like manifestations of celiac to me. Celiac can be difficult to deal with, at first, but (if Ella has it), the vast improvements she will make on a gluten free diet will... -
I have a four year old and an 18 month old, neither of whom have been tested. They also don't have any symptoms of celiac, at least not classically presenting symptoms. I suspect it's a bit early to test the baby, but is the 4 year old, old enough? And would I have her tested by the ped, or by a gastroenterologist? Is a tTG test enough? I hope to heck...

ARCHIVED Do You Ever Have Weird Dreams
SharonF replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, I dreamt that I was feeding my kids toaster scrambles and then licked the fork, then immediately realized what I had done. I was very relieved when I woke up! -
ARCHIVED Eating The Same Thing, Over And Over
SharonF replied to mandigirl1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might find, if you decide to go ahead and have that sandwich, that it will be the last gluten you ever intentionally eat. I was gluten-free last September and October and then decided to "cheat" on Thanksgiving. After spending the next day running to the bathroom, and feeling the glutened brain fog, I decided it wasn't worth it. You do get used to... -
ARCHIVED Positive Olive Garden Experience
SharonF replied to SharonF's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the city. But what Richard said should go for all places. If the manager of your Olive Garden doesn't understand, you could educate him. Or, of course, just go someplace else. Because it was kind of sad for me to watch everyone else with their fettucinie alfredo and whatnot. -
Work folks went to Olive Garden today, because we had a gift card. I talked to the server, and a manager came out to talk to me with a specially printed gluten free menu. Not a lot of choices--Tuscan T-Bone, Pork Fillettino, or Grilled Salmon--all served with broccoli. But it was nice to be able to eat something. They were also accomodating about not...

Nothing in the ingredients jumps out at me as glutenous, but I thought toffee might be questionable. Anyone know?

I think I've been "coping with" celiac disease by overdoing it on the stuff I CAN. I mean, I eat way too much candy, for one thing. I wonder if it's my mind's way of saying "Okay, no regular pizza, but I can have all the M&Ms I want!" ?
