  1. My heart used to skip a lot right before I was diagnosed. I was having a lot of PVC's. They did a thyroid test and had me wear a monitor for a week. My thyroid was low, but the Dr. didn't read the results right and told me I was "right in the middle of normal." They diagnosed me with a heart arrhythmia but never told me, and kept telling me I was just...
  2. ZOMG! Yippeee! I've been avoiding Starbucks like crazy for the past few months because I can't drink caffeine and they have all those pastries I get to stare at and worry about and I don't want crumbs on my coffee filters. This is friggin awesome! Thanks for the link!!
  3. You should also make sure that you're actually eating gluten-free. I thought I went gluten-free last August but discovered in November that I had been eating gluten all along in a seasoning I was using on my chicken every day. Once I realized I wasn't being careful enough, I studied all the charts and guides carefully and finally managed to get it right...
  4. I just remembered one other thing I used to do when I was in college. I'd go buy ground beef in bulk--those 2lb packs on clearance at the grocery store--get some Classico spaghetti sauce (not all flavors are gluten-free so check first) and I'd cook up the beef and mix in the sauce and then split it up into a whole bunch of reusable storage containers. I...
  5. I eat lots of tuna salad for lunch at work all week. It's quick to make and yummy with Best Foods mayo, onion, tomato, and served on Corn Thins. The Corn Thins give it a very nice flavor and make it more filling so I don't have to make as much tuna each day. That helps the tuna last longer (I buy a big pack of cans at Costco every payday.) Costco has...
  6. Thanks! I just bought this mix to try. I was going to bake it in a cake pan rather than as a loaf...maybe that will work too.
  7. I haven't seen this doctor, but I do go to the Community Clinics that the Open Original Shared Link runs every week. It's only $20 to go and you meet with a student who consults with the doctors, but it is amazing how much they know. And many of them have Celiac children so it's not just from booklearnin'. lol The student I'm seeing now is going to give...
  8. OMG rotfl!!! I bet you're right. But it doesn't explain the bagpipes. I read somewhere that Celiac is so prevalent in Ireland that it's a breeze to eat out there. I'm mostly Scottish, Irish, and English with just a hint of Native American. I don't wonder for a second why I'm gluten intolerant! lol
  9. Our ancestors did notice it. In fact, the word Celiac is a derivative of the Greek word "koiliakos": Latin coeliacus, from Greek koiliakos, from koili, abdomen, from koilos, hollow. Open Original Shared Link Yes, the Greeks diagnosed Celiac thousands of years ago. I'm sure Celiac is as old as agriculture itself. It has been known for a long time...
  10. Boy I've been through the ringer with doctors and have decided I'm through. I don't really call my Naturopath a "doctor" since that's kind of a bad word to me. She's so much more awesome than I could have ever hoped for, so she gets a special "better than a doctor" designation. This is a genetic test that tells you if you have certain variations...
  11. Boy, I tell ya, this ain't me. Now, I'm not one of the Celiacs that's been diagnosed with blood test and biopsy. But my symptoms are so severe with the tiniest amount of gluten, my body wouldn't in a million years let me cheat! Heck I ate Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia 4 nights ago which even my Dr. says is gluten-free and today I had an id reaction on...
  12. Wow what an interesting thread. Thanks for the info. My mom didn't remember any specifics about what they were called or how she did them, so I didn't have much to go on. But what you described sounds plausible. She did say she was injecting herself, so maybe they gave her something to do at home. Not sure. Obviously I probably just inherited...
  13. Gluten gives me non-epileptic seizures, Narcolepsy with Cataplexy (paralysis), depression, anxiety attacks, foggy brain, memory problems, disrupted sleep, moodiness, etc... Someone posted a great link to Open Original Shared Link here a little while ago and they describe in more detail what can be going on. They even mention antigliadin antibodies can...
  14. Wow thanks for the link. I love this site. It's nice to see when doctors actually 'get it'. I wish I lived nearby so I could visit them.
  15. Wow I wish I was still in touch with an old friend of mine. She had burning parasthesias in her feet and had cataplexy when she ate food. I found I can control my cataplexy if I eat gluten-free. She took a lot of heavy-duty meds to control it all. I bet she'd benefit immensely from a gluten-free diet and the other things you recommended. Oh well.
  16. My family is awesome. We did a whole gluten-free Christmas dinner and they made sure they asked about everything to get it just right. My boyfriend is also supportive and has even suggested we put our son on a gluten-free diet just in case. He always thinks about what I can eat when he grocery shops (yes he loves buying the food.) My co-workers are also...
  17. Ok I finally got it! Here is a recipe for Kahlua that you can make gluten-free. I haven't tried it yet, so if you make it, let me know how it is. I hope it's good. I'm not sure that the coffee has to be instant, since the measurement looks liquid (and not very strong...4 oz?) Kahlua 3 cups water 6 cups sugar 4 oz instant coffee 4 TBSP vanilla...
  18. No no, I get you totally! I can't even eat off a fork that was used to eat cake and then scrubbed with soap and hot water incessantly. Really! I get seizures anyway. I also got a somewhat snide remark here when I posted about Safeway stocking leaky gluten flour next to leaky gluten-free flour. For me that would be instant poison but for others, no...
  19. I know how you feel! I recently went gluten free and it's helped me immensely. I have a family history of Celiac and my 4 yr old son has recently shown signs of reacting to gluten, but really slight neurological symptoms, not many GI symptoms. When I get my tax return I'm going to HLA type both of us through Enterolabs so I know if he inherited anything...
  20. My mom was doing it in the 1970's because she couldn't get pregnant. (I personally think it was the gluten intolerance but she's still kind of in denial about that.) She was injecting herself with tree pollens, molds, etc. while she was pregnant with me and now I'm allergic to all those things and everything related, like profillins in fruits, etc. I don...
  21. I have a question for moms of Celiacs out there but the forum search isn't working so I apologize if this is a repeat of an old topic. I have a family history of Celiac, etc., and recently found that I, too, am super sensitive to gluten and going gluten free has helped me immensely. However, since then, I've been watching my 4 yr old son after he eats...
  22. Wow this reminds me of a guy I met a long time ago. He would throw up all the time and they didn't know why, so they did surgery to make it impossible for him to throw up anymore. I never once heard any mention of looking for food intolerances. They just forcibly 'fixed' the problem instead of looking for the real cause. Modern medicine seems so backwards...
  23. I went to the Naturopath yesterday. I go to a community clinic of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland because it's a lot cheaper. I haven't been in to see them since I made all my wonderful discoveries about gluten, so my appointment ended up lasting about 2 hours! I guess in a way, I was just going in to vent a bit, with all...
  24. I love Glutino. I haven't had a problem yet. Best products ever.
  25. Hey Jerry, so am I. I'm in Beaverton and just started trying to figure out the gluten-free life this fall. I haven't tried any restaurants yet but I want to try Corbett's Fish House over in the Cedar Hills mall area (I think). I hear it's good.
