ARCHIVED Seeking A Remedy For My Symptoms
maile replied to her-never-ending-muse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with the aloe vera juice, I too get the big C when glutened followed closely by D! Aloe vera juice seems to help with the inflammation and the pain. given that you have chronic (at least it sounds like chronic from your description) C you might try "cleanse more" by ReNew Life, I think it's available at most heath food stores. a list of the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Not Diagnosed (yet)
maile replied to lesson's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the other posters and the answer is yes. If you search the "Coping with" section you'll find a thread called "rain barrel effect" which has some interesting information about the build up of symptoms/reactions for me I know that previously I could have gluten 1x a week or so and only be moderately uncomfortable but have it 2x in one day... -
ARCHIVED Goitrogenic Compounds In Tapioca And Other Foods
maile replied to RiceGuy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for the response, I like a lot of these veggies but have also had problems with hypothyroid symptoms and was starting to wonder. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free - Going Dairy-free
maile replied to fripp017's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
depending on your level of sensitivity I'm afraid it's the label reading although you should note, most of us react to the casein in dairy so there's another word for you to check, if you want to go fully dairy free watch for: lactose (this is the sugar and often accounts for the gas and bloating associated with dairy); whey and casein (these are... -
ARCHIVED Im Newly Diagnosed And So Angry
maile replied to ginnybean32's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi ginnybean32, I think your story would touch anyone's heart! lonewolf had a great idea about adapting your everyday food here's a couple of suggestions from your post: use the dairy free cream cheese and put it on celery or gluten-free crackers, frankly I find the gluten-free breads horrible so I just don't eat them but crackers... -
ARCHIVED Goitrogenic Compounds In Tapioca And Other Foods
maile replied to RiceGuy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
RiceGuy, in your studies have you ever come across what level of exposure/ingestion of the vegetables on that list is needed before it begins to supress the thyroid? just curious. maile -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do For A Living?
maile replied to Bosque's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Financial Planner, in front of clients all day long, makes bathroom trips interesting!! (I'm quite honest with my clients, trust is a big part of my job and I've found it best to be up front with my "problems" ) -
Good Luck! earlier either you or someone mentioned Lithmus paper as an example, here's another, remember those tablets from dentists that when kids chew them any missed plaque (from brushing) goes red? I think this would be an awesome idea!

ARCHIVED Gene Test Results: Our Whole Family Is Double Dq1
maile replied to hypatia7777's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To echo what Jetsgar said just because you don't carry one of the 2 genes that are currently identified with "Celiac" by the US and Canadian Medical establishment does not mean you don't have an autoimmune reaction to gluten. Check Ravenwoodglass' sig, you'll see she is HLA 9,9 and she found that out AFTER she was officially diagnosed with Celiac. I've read... -
ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms
maile replied to Nan 70's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Pincushion, how did you discover the hypopituitarism? and how do you deal with it? I'm very suspicious that that may be a concern for me. for the past couple of years I've had progressively more apparent hypothyroid symptoms, in particular I'm COLD. bad enough that at times I have woken up in the middle of the night (ie 2 am) to have a hot bath... -
ARCHIVED Pro-gest A Progesterone Cream_
maile replied to one more mile's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've used natural progesterone creams and found them helpful, I have a slightly different problem of having my period every 14-18 days the progesterone creams reduced the PMS symptoms and when combined with gluten-free diet I can actually get pretty close to a "normal" cycle. a good book to read is Dr John R Lee's "what your doctor won't tell you... -
ARCHIVED How Long Should A Gluten Challenge Be?
maile replied to Defkid's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
um not to be snarky but shouldn't that be "consists of eating gluten foods" ? (I bet you're like me, my fingers and brain have to consciously drop the word free when writing gluten ) -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing
maile replied to Brainfog's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you wish to do a genetic test on your own you can go to the Enterolab website and order one (except if you live in NY State, the site has details on that) all the costs etc are clearly labled. Do be aware that the genetic testing is just that, it won't diagnose but it will give you clues with regards to propensity towards celiac/gluten intolerance.... -
ARCHIVED Make Your Own Hair Color?
maile replied to raisin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you check with the Henna forums many of them practice natural hair colour and can give you an insight into which plants give which colours. I think the biggest thing is getting the right method that will allow the colour to penetrate the hair shaft. for dark brown or black I've heard everything from walnut, coffee and soy sauce Aveda has a hair... -
ARCHIVED Question
maile replied to Dasmith's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
yep! That happend to me this weekend and I am seriously bummed about it as I also love popcorn. If you cruise the forum you'll see that a number of people have had to go off corn for either a while (or forever for some) while the gut heals. jmho, but I think the symptoms may have always been there b4 but would have been masked by the gluten symptoms. -
Unfortunately you've hit the nail on the head, what is "normal" for one is not always normal for others; however, 2 things stand out from your question.... 1) there does seem to be some genetic component to gluten intolerance and the symptoms you describe are "normal" for some gluten intolerant people (I get brain fog, anxiety, lack of focus etc, then...

ARCHIVED I Accidently Ate Gluten.
maile replied to mrskhatt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use aloe vera juice (mixed with regular juice...can't stand the taste otherwise) and that helps as it is an anti inflamatory. -
ARCHIVED Input On The Meaning Of These Results
maile replied to Adelaide's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello and welcome! if you look around the forum (search "blood test + results") you'll see that it's generally accepted that there is a high probability for a false negative in blood tests but a very low occurrence of false positives. -
ARCHIVED Does Celiac Make You Look Old/cause Aging?
maile replied to Darko21's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
are you taking any supplements? often what ages us or makes us look older is lack of specific nutrients such as zinc, magnesium and copper...all of which play a role in good skin tone/elasticity and hair. celiacs don't always absorb enough of these nutrients. for skin texture another supplement associated with better skin is fish oils. as for the... -
ARCHIVED Autoimmune Disease And Histocompatibility
maile replied to Candy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
um, isn't this alot like choosing to marry only for money or status? ie, who cares if s/he is a dork/mean person as long as our bank accounts are compatible? Just because tissues and cells match does not mean personalities will, let alone whether that person will be a good partner with whom you want to raise children from an intellectual point, I guess... -
ARCHIVED Long Rant..just Having To Vent About My Appointment
maile replied to chasbari's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
first off, WOW, what a disappointing morning!! Props to you for being courageous enough to stand your ground ...it seems that your MD is rather stuck in his ways In the end, you are the best judge of your body and it's reactions. You really seem to have found something that works for you and if this dork can't see that then perhaps it's time to either... -
ARCHIVED What European Contry Did Coeliacs Originate From?
maile replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll be sure to blame my parents as well then, also Irish Italian -
that's kind of wild!! did s/he explain why that works? I'd always understood that it had to do with potassium and/or magnesium levels. (I don't get them while sleeping, instead I get foot cramps in the early evening and take potassium (if I can) as well as stretching my foot out)

ARCHIVED Capsule Study Of The Small Intestine
maile replied to Kathy Mac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Glad to hear the enteroscopy went well....as for updates, please do continue! -
kaiess, are you coming down as far as Kamloops? (don't mean to pry but 8 hours from northern BC could mean either the central interior or Edmonton!!) There's a Nando's in Kamloops and they have quite a few gluten-free menu items, just don't get anything with the Peri Peri powder on it (esp the fries, the regular fries are fine, I've had no problems with those...
