  1. Thank you so much for being here and sharing your experiences everyone! The 504 plan is already being implemented based on their "Allergy Action Plan" from the local pediatrician. That simply means that the kids are authorized to be medicated should a reaction occur. The school demands that the doctor instruct accommodation . . . and the doctor is like...
  2. Our allergists and pediatricians have "assured" us that wheat allergy is "slow acting". As in, we can notice and treat our reactions before they progress rapidly. Even though I have a "proven" wheat allergy - both skin test positive and extensive history, I still only carry antihistamine and inhaler per the advice of the allergist and the general consult...
  3. And, no, neither child in these conditions has an epi at this time. Since the wheat allergy is generally seen as a "slow-acting" response, there is less urgency and care given to those that suffer from wheat allergy. We have generally found that we are expected to drug and tolerate our allergy symptoms to accommodate the communities that we are entitled...
  4. My understanding so far is that they literally have free range eating: anything, anytime (within some limits) and anywhere. This is standard protocol for this school district throughout elementary and middle schools at least. We are bringing new pediatricians on board since we just made an international relocation, so the medical side for gaining accommodations...
  5. This is a public school in the USA. The principal stated that this free eating with no food restrictions in the classroom is standard procedure for the district and will not change. We are meeting to discuss the healthcare plan requirements later this week. It is simply astonishing to me the huge difference in accommodation between the Australian schools...
  6. Does anyone have children that are in classrooms that are used for daily, unrestricted eating by all of the students? We have enjoyed gluten free classrooms for years now, but our latest relocation has us in a school that allows students to freely eat whatever they want in their classrooms. I would appreciate hearing about the classroom environment for...
  7. It is possible to have celiac and wheat/gluten allergy. I am allergic to wheat and barley for sure and my reactions are too severe to give rye a trial. I also have celiac complications. The reaction that you described sounds like an allergy and you need to take caution in any future trials. I am surprised that the allergist wait is so long. I would definitely...
  8. I cannot comment on the recovery time for your child, but can say that each of my children responded on their own timelines for recovery from gluten exposure. We did not have chronic growth issues, but in other areas our recovery has been painfully slow at times. It has taken continual, mindful adherence to strict gluten free protocols. I believe that...
  9. I also wanted to add that I have used Allergic Girl coaching services to help us in our journey. She offers food allergy counseling, and we have always utilized her services via phone/video tools. It is really nice to be able to speak with a counselor that understands the social implications that allergies can create. She has a book that you can read...
  10. Hi, I just want to lend my support and understanding for airborne wheat issues. We are a celiac family dealing with wheat/gluten allergy. It has been a long journey for us, and we moved to Australia in part to enjoy the benefits of fantastic gluten free labeling. The impact of the superior gluten free labeling here is astonishing. Other people find it...
  11. None of us deal with continence issues now. The longer we have been gluten free, the better we have gotten at managing and eliminating potential exposures. That being said, it was such an issue for super silly girl as we were getting smarter about living gluten free that she was regularly checked for UTI and watched for diabetes. It is good to communicate...
  12. We have found gluten exposure to impact continence. This was true for our super silly girl and is one of her accommodations at school...she gets irritable bladder issues that make her go frequently. It was also true for her younger brother when he was very young, as well as being true for myself.
  13. That rash looks similar to one that my son gets on the outside of his elbows. The pediatricians that we consulted indicated that it was psoriasis like and to treat with cortisone. Our son's rash seems to present and worsen with gluten exposures. Quite by accident we found that giving him Zyrtec helps with his rash. When he started at a daycare facility...
  14. Thank you for the notice about the Freedom Food oats. I noticed they had gone missing from our local Coles. I found some boxes still at IGA. And I have called and left a voice mail at Freedom Foods. I am more than bummed. Our family was doing well after being able to introduce these oats last year. I want more explanation from them.
  15. Yes, FIFO is Fly In Fly Out. In essence one mobilises to a work camp, prevalent in mining and oil & gas projects. Camps have kitchens with food service. Gluten free options exist, but cross contamination seems concerning. Even if only going to site for a short stint, access to grocery stores and personal food prep is severely limited. I haven't yet...
  16. Regarding alcoholic ginger beer, Matso's and Crabbies are labelled gluten free. Has anyone tried/done a FIFO assignment?
  17. One of our children has joint pain issues, and they seem to be greatly worsened by gluten exposures. She has been gluten free for most of her life. She presented with horrible joint issues following prolonged, chronic exposures at school that resulted in chronic, painful skin rashes. Her first hospitalization resulted in testing for several tick-borne...
  18. Hi charliesmum! We allow our children (coeliac and gluten allergy) to eat food that is prepared by out of school hours care providers. One requirement that we have is that they eat on their own dishes, using their own utensils. They have a well labeled "gluten free" plastic container with lid that is used to store their dishes and emergency snacks in a...
  19. One of our kids gets chronic cough with gluten exposure. Last episode was triggered by an orthodontic appliance in her mouth. A few years ago we had issues with her chronic cough when we were still trying to sort out diet and protocols. Sometimes I wonder if the cough is GERD related, or perhaps EE. I just don't understand it! And it is debilitating...
  20. It turned out to be pretty easy to find a gluten free hairspray here. Most of the ones that I looked at (not that many, but a few) did not list gluten ingredients. Bedhead (what family member had from USA, and it was available in the shop here) had wheat in it.
  21. My family has coeliac and gluten/wheat allergy. I am suffering from an allergic reaction after exposure to someone who is using hairspray with wheat in it. It seems the most obvious place to start - find a gluten/wheat free hairspray (found wheat in hairspray when I was trying to figure out what was causing my allergic reaction that is customary to my airborne...
  22. Hi, does anyone have gluten/wheat free hairspray recommendations? Thank you!
  23. The symptoms that you are describing are not considered "normal" for a celiac based on my readings. That being said, they are not unheard of either. Our family suffers from skin issues related to gluten exposure. We are considered to have celiac and gluten allergy. Often times I will refer to the allergy as wheat allergy, but that is only to simplify...
  24. Hugs, mommy! I am sorry you are dealing with such insensitive people.
  25. Also relevant from study abstract: "The presence of oats in non-gluten-free labelled foods was strongly correlated with a positive ELISA result. Gluten was also found in a significant number of foods with gluten/wheat-related advisory warnings."
