ARCHIVED Erewhon Brown Rice Gluten-Free Cereal
weluvgators replied to IrishHeart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Our family would not eat Erewhon cereals when we researched it a couple of years ago. In the past year we have been quite successful introducing Orgran cereals. Orgran is made in Australia and is required to adhere to a "no detectable gluten" level. Their customer service has been fantastic in my phone calls as well. The current level of detection being... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Learning To Let Go?
weluvgators replied to seezee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Congratulations on your daughter's achievement! That is very exciting for both of you. I have found that Allergic Girl resources have been of tremendous value in helping me learn how to better enjoy our blessed lives while navigating the finer details of food and allergy management that comes with our medical condition. I loved reading her book, and... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Learning To Let Go?
weluvgators replied to seezee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The food service company seems to be unprofessional with this type of response. They are the food professionals, and I feel that they should take ownership of providing safe food for those they are serving. Why can they not review their protocols and advise *exactly* what the issues are? Just like they *hopefully* have procedures in place for "guaranteeing... -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Lactose Intolerant.....lots Of Questions
weluvgators replied to USF1970's topic in Super Sensitive People
We use small thermoses, lunch boxes with ice packs and small plastic containers to pack our foods. Have you tried broths? How are you with meats? Sweet potatoes and potatoes can make a nice base for filling foods as well. We also enjoy nuts as a good, portable snack. How about beans? We enjoy pinto, black, kidney and navy and appreciate that we can... -
I don't think that living gluten free is tragic, and I would help my family be gluten free. I do think it is odd that so many people are obsessed with eating gluten, often with a chunk of dairy. It seems that many people focus their diets on processed gluten foods with dairy, and I think *that* is tragic. What my kids did away from home would be primarily...

I came across some fantastic information about quinoa farming and potential gluten cross contamination concerns investigated for Kosher for Passover requirements here: Open Original Shared Link I found the information invaluable in possibly understanding why I have had issues with past quinoa consumption. And now I wonder if Kosher for Passover resources...

ARCHIVED Think I Glutened My Kid
weluvgators replied to Avalon451's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I hope she is on the mend quickly. We have been gluten free for almost 6 years now, and we still have our "what was that?" moments. Kids are tough - tough to figure out and tough enough to get through the knocks of childhood. It sounds like you are doing well. It is quite a process to adopt gluten free living, and it sounds like you are making great strides... -
ARCHIVED Help Please? 13 Year Old Son Sneaking Wheat!
weluvgators replied to candygirl69's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids really enjoy being able to go buy stuff like the other kids do. We have worked it a couple of different ways, depending on the circumstances. You may want to see if you can work with the canteen to ensure that he has options there so that he can go get extra food if he wants. We also tend to pack lots and lots of different snacks with my kids so... -
ARCHIVED Playdough Causing Reaction?
weluvgators replied to Mom-of-Two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would think this type of reaction may fall closer to the wheat/gluten allergy side of things, but that is biased based on our family's experience. We have both celiac and wheat/gluten allergy, and it can certainly cause confusion. And if it is wheat/gluten "allergy", then it is quite possible that the standard celiac tests may show negative. Good luck... -
ARCHIVED Does Super Sensitivity Exist?
weluvgators replied to weluvgators's topic in Super Sensitive People
Yep, we have wheat/gluten allergy and coeliac issues. I can't make sense of it all. We have figured out that there are people that research "allergy" . . .and the wheat allergy isn't messed with much because it often has respiratory and/or cardiovascular implications that can be severe and life threatening. And then there are people that research coeliac... -
ARCHIVED Went gluten-free In Support And Found Out You Had It?
weluvgators replied to Jestgar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This happened for us. My oldest Dd and I went strictly gluten free for our second child and ended up with gluten hypersensitivity and anaphylactic reactions to gluten. We are all very careful to remain gluten free. Our third child was born gluten free and has never had a direct gluten trial. And he has reactions to gluten contamination . . . Not sure... -
ARCHIVED Reaction To Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
weluvgators replied to TwoGirlsMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have two girls that have had chronic hand issues, most likely due to gluten exposure. The best remedy that we found to consistently work for relief was cold, wet cloths applied to the hands (my DDs had really bad dermatitis/eczema issues particularly on the backs of their hands). I highly recommend working with a dermatologist, although we found that... -
ARCHIVED H. Pylori
weluvgators replied to sarahw's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board, bcsamm! I think several, if not many, people here have h. pylori experience. My DD was treated for h.pylori, and she is also treated for celiac. The story is long and complicated. I think there is some relationship between the two, but I don't have any links handy. The untreated celiac gut is susceptible to all sorts of things,... -
ARCHIVED Just Returned From Trip To Australia
weluvgators replied to RoseTapper's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi, Michelle, We came to Perth from the States, and we are having a great time here. We went to the Coeliac Western Australia office in Bentley for information Open Original Shared Link . They had a restaurant list that was very helpful for us when we stopped by to become members (they may be willing to give you a copy . . . or I can try to find my copy... -
As a 90 page document, I have found the FDA publication, Health Hazard Assessment for Gluten Exposure in Individuals with Celiac Disease: Determination of Tolerable Daily Intake Levels and Levels of Concern for Gluten by the Office of Food Safety Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Food and Drug Administration in May 2011, to be a wee bit overwhelming...

We never tried freezing it, as we have a family of five consuming the milks. I would love to hear how it goes if anyone tries it. I don't know why it wouldn't work, although you may get some separation. But that seems easy enough to take care of once thawed. Myself and a friend did a lot of baking projects using the nut milks, and the results were fabulous...

For regular milk production we found investing in a chinois (a fine mesh strainer, used in French cooking, I think) to be really helpful. It made the whole process so much nicer for us. I found a recipe online that called for adding fat to the rice milk and really thought that added alot. Here is the recipe that we used quite a bit: Open Original Shared...

ARCHIVED Lupus? Connective Tissue Diseases?
weluvgators replied to suziq0805's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My DD wasn't tested for celiac until after being gluten free for years, so she was negative on the serum screen, and we elected not to biopsy (she is genetically at very high risk for celiac). She went gluten free very early in life for her younger sister. Both she and I went from "asymptomatic" to "hypersensitive" after our gluten elimination. Neither... -
Are there really millions of celiacs in remission? Rough numbers: 300 million Americans Maybe 3 million have celiac disease (1%, right?) Are they still saying 97% are undiagnosed? (University of Chicago still reports 97%) So, maybe 90,000 Americans are diagnosed? I recently read (I can't remember where, but I will link to an article that seems...

ARCHIVED Lupus? Connective Tissue Diseases?
weluvgators replied to suziq0805's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
We have had some issues with my DD that landed us in rheumatology - involving fatigue, joint pain, weakness, hives, burning skin rashes, elevated sed rate . . . she has hypermobile joints and had lots of headaches, restless legs, leg and arm pain before we got our diets much cleaner of gluten. Long story, but in the end, some of the more effective things... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For Pain
weluvgators replied to mikesgirl1990's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We use belly massage to help with pain. We have also used heating pads in the past for severe cramping. For plane trips and travel we like to pack thermoses with warm foods and carry them in insulated containers. Steak (chopped up so no cutting is required to eat), potatoes and salad are one of the easier ones that work well for us. If you want dressing... -
ARCHIVED Any Bean Info That You Can Give Me!
weluvgators replied to shayre's topic in Super Sensitive People
I recently moved to Australia and lost my dried bean sources that I had been using safely in the States (not a single brand, but the beans were bulk sourced through our local health food store and home tested for gluten, then washed). Anyway, here in Australia, I am being told that they don't grow beans. All of the dried bean sources I have found so far... -
ARCHIVED What's The Best And Worst About Being Super-Sensitive?
weluvgators replied to T.H.'s topic in Super Sensitive People
I could not have said it better myself. It really is so nice to know that others can relate to our experiences with living gluten free. -
ARCHIVED What's The Best And Worst About Being Super-Sensitive?
weluvgators replied to T.H.'s topic in Super Sensitive People
I don't know about others, but I do not have the ability to PM anyone about their comments that concern me . . . Or even if I just want to share something more personal or trivial,. Like even a "thanks". I can either post it openly on the board or remain silent. I find myself often choosing silence, as it often seems the safer of my given options. -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive Teen
weluvgators replied to jhuebner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As a mother of super sensitive children, having integrated two of them into the school system, I feel it is very important to review hand washing procedures with your child. We have Individual Health Care Plans for each of them to review with all necessary parties that handwashing RIGHT before eating is critical to their health and well being. Our health...
