ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue, Super Sensitivity, Prednisone, And Comorbid Autoimmunity.
weluvgators replied to CNV2855's topic in Super Sensitive People
I would like to add that my father was treated with steroids many years ago. His doctors believe that he was absorbing the steroids in ways that he "should not" have been (impaired epithelial function comes to my mind). He is now unable to take any steroids or antihistamines. Please don't overlook the complications that can result from steroid use. -

Hi! Steph and Jestgar have really great observations. I particularly enjoyed reading Jestgar's posts in the breakfast thread IIRC - there are some fantastic suggestions there! You need to eat, you need to eat well, and you have to do the work to find safe FOOD. I am a super sensitive mother of three super sensitive kids. One of my children was hospitalized... -
ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
weluvgators replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We got tired of chasing the art room issues, so we now have our kids use primarily their own art supplies - we seemed to be having issues with *other* kids contaminating the "gluten free" supplies (like crayons). It is working out better since our girls primarily use only their own art supplies - they just bring their personal art supplies in a pencil case... -
These symptoms sound like possible wheat allergy issues. We have learned the hard way that our wheat "allergy" issues can as serious (if not more so) than our "celiac" issues. Please consider consulting with an allergist to evaluate your symptoms. I think that the celiac community sometimes overlooks how serious the wheat allergy aspect can be for some...

ARCHIVED Daughter Got Gluttened
weluvgators replied to Genna'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For our family, we tend to not want to eat much (if at all) after getting glutened. If you have a safe rice, that may work well, and sometimes we start back gently with homemade broth soups. We also enjoy lemonade - made with honey, squeezed lemons, a bit of salt and water. Work on keeping her hydrated well. We encourage eating whole foods, processed... -
ARCHIVED Seriously? Gluten In The Drywall?
weluvgators replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The MSDS and ingredients that you reference is for Durock cement board, most commonly used for tile applications, not typical wallboard. Here is an MSDS for Sheetrock gypsum panels, a more common wallboard material, Open Original Shared Link . I spoke with USG safety this morning, and they were wonderfully helpful. The person that I spoke with agreed... -
ARCHIVED Deland Bakery
weluvgators replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not checked in over three years now, but we had gluten problems with their breads. When we looked, the breads were done in a shared facility, there was no gluten testing of their products, and the label declared that it "contains wheat..." even when there were no gluten ingredients. We do not eat their products. I cannot tell from their website... -
ARCHIVED Does It Get Any Easier

Hugs, Mama! We have been very happy with Orgran products. According to their site, Orgran has a great big bag of little bags of cookies that we keep at school for our kids. I have a small Tupperware box that we keep in their classrooms that has a variety of safe stuff - candy, cookies, dried fruits, drinks (nut milks and juices). Good... -
ARCHIVED Could Not Believe What I Was Hearing!
weluvgators replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Restaurants can be so hard to navigate. And it really is best to do the inquisition *before* you are there to eat. But that is SO HARD - I get it. You may want to call them and see if they are interested in improving their gluten free service . . . if you have the time and energy to help them figure it out better. One restaurant local to me was so excited... -

GFM gave great advice! And with "borderline" TB . . . hhmmm, I am surprised that you were discharged . . . without I dunno - better advice? Do the doctors expect him to go back to school now?? I am thoroughly confused myself! You are NOT crazy. Your doctors seem to be elusive at best . . . not sure if they have a plan or strategy. NO, you are... -
ARCHIVED This Is Getting Ridiculous!
weluvgators replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, bartfull! I am so frustrated by psoriasis at the moment. I wish I could figure it out for my very young son . . . who in my research is really, really young to be having outbreaks. I just haven't had much time to research it all that much. I have had time to get to two pediatricians that agree it is psoriasis. It is so frustrating. The slightest... -
ARCHIVED Budgeting Tips For Frugal Celiacs
weluvgators replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think that depends on many things - what foods your would eat otherwise, how many people you may be feeding, what access you have to stores, what kinds of sales your stores have, how specific your food sourcing requirements are, etc. It works out very well for us. We store our unwashed bulk foods in large, clear tupperwares, and it also makes up our emergency... -
ARCHIVED Budgeting Tips For Frugal Celiacs
weluvgators replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
I am using standard lids (separate lid and band) when I freeze my jars. I try to let them cool a bit on the counter and/or fridge before popping it into the freezer. I had some cracking issues when I was using the jars to make ice blocks last year, but it was more of a problem when I pulled them out of the freezer and thawed them too quickly. I try not... -
ARCHIVED Budgeting Tips For Frugal Celiacs
weluvgators replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
We have found developing a good relationship with our local health food store to be very helpful. After working with her for a couple of years, we now have a buying plan with her to reduce our costs on most of our food from her. She has also developed a great network with local farmers that we can rely on. She also grows some produce for us that is very... -

ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
weluvgators replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am also one that suggested a list of many *other* things to check (including other food allergens), as I am also in that group of parents of gluten intolerant children that end up hospitalized (I think that may also be a small minority, but maybe not). I know of another celiac boy that was hospitalized several times his first year after diagnosis, largely... -
ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
weluvgators replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would suggest implementing a gluten free home immediately. At least remove *that* variable. I am completely biased by our experiences that have demonstrated that going after the *known* potential culprit has gotten me vastly superior results to chasing the *unknowns*. Keep running tests, keep investigating, but seriously consider removing the *known... -
ARCHIVED What Does Super Sensitive Mean?
weluvgators replied to Di2011's topic in Super Sensitive People
I think that dilettantesteph sums it up nicely. We are a family with one parent and three children that are super sensitive. We react to gluten in places that typical celiacs do not. Some (maybe all?) of us in my family also have gluten allergy, so we get the privilege of recognizing gluten in ways that many celiacs may not. One comment I do want to... -
ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
weluvgators replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am sorry to hear of your family's struggles. My DD was hospitalized two times last year, and it was awful. She was 6 years old at the time, and her hospitalizations followed "gluten free" processed foods ingestion. She had horrific reactions, and it left her extremely reactive for months. She did have complicating conditions, but they were never discovered... -
There is a whole thread for "The Funny Pages . . . " - here is the link: The Flat-D site looks good, and they have a clip from The Doctors where it was mentioned: Open Original Shared Link . From the site, I really enjoyed how the OP article addressed the value of EZ Gluten tests - it was really cool how she articulated that she originally...

ARCHIVED In Defense Of 20 Parts Per Million
weluvgators replied to psawyer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am surprised to see such a generalization about many celiacs. Most of the celiacs that I know have gone to great lengths to understand many factors involved in their recovery. Our family is practiced in medically supervised elimination/challenge diets, and we have eliminated more than just gluten. We are also dairy free, amongst other things. And you... -
ARCHIVED I Have Gone gluten-free W/my 15 Yr Old And I Feel Terrible!
weluvgators replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you been tested yet for celiac? You may want to get yourself and any other family members tested now. I went gluten free for my DD, and I never would have guessed that I would be unable to do a gluten challenge for myself later (my reactions are too severe now after being strictly gluten free for my DD). And we had some withdrawal issues initially... -
ARCHIVED In Defense Of 20 Parts Per Million
weluvgators replied to psawyer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
But does your granddaughter eat foods with up to 20 PPM of peanut in it? And is she advised (or not advised as we seem to be striving for with the current legislation) that this "processed food" should be limited to less than 1/3 of her daily diet? And getting foods from a peanut free facility seems to be far easier than tracking down dedicated gluten free... -
Do you carry emergency antihistamine, and did you take it? Do you have a Food Allergy Action Plan? And are you wearing a Medical Alert bracelet? These are some of the things that we have found necessary due to our severe reactions to incidental gluten exposure. I have allergy induced asthma, so I have found it necessary to stop and monitor my breathing...

ARCHIVED Extra Charge For Sent Back Food?
weluvgators replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It happened to us once when we were travelling . . . I was tired, in a bit of a hurry and not feeling like going over every detail with the server at a small restaurant (not a chain). The meat dish I ordered arrived with the meat covered in fancy bread crumbs - no mention whatsoever of that on the menu. Silly me for being adventurous when ordering based...
