  1. My kids use placemats when eating in shared environments. We use cloth ones that fold up in their lunch bags. They also bring their own napkins and silverware so that they can feed themselves independently. I also pack a backup set of silverware in case they drop one.
  2. Big hugs, Mama! And some more hugs for Grace too! I don't have great ideas and no experience with Emetrol here. It sounds awful, and I hope that she feels better soon. We used heat packs for our daughter when she had total GI distress and shut down. She would lay there and hold them on her belly . . . I have no idea if it helped with nausea as that was...
  3. Yep, the basics only go so far from the GI Dr and dietitian. We got "lucky" in that we have multiple family members that have been helpful in our tweaking and discovery process. And we continue to work on our overall health and wellness with a gluten free diet as our cornerstone. We have had to eliminate most processed foods, but that is also helpful because...
  4. Good luck to everyone working on school education!! I certainly have my exhausted and overwhelming moments. It is hard to advocate when the subject feels so emotional sometimes. I am still trying to learn and understand more about effective advocacy. Here is one of my favorite links that I used last year: Open Original Shared Link I hope...
  5. Big hugs, Mama! I hope you appointment goes well for both of you. I understand how hard it is to try and take all of this in stride, pretending it is no big deal for the sake of "normalizing" it for our children. I understand just wanting to break down and cry, but not being able to because there are kids in tow. I have asked if my children could step...
  6. Hugs, Mama! It can be difficult to sort through this gluten mess. Yes, you absolutely may have witnessed your daughter's improved health because of gluten elimination. I would know very quickly that gluten made our children sick, and it was so obvious when they had more good days than bad that the gluten was causative of the illness and low level sickness...
  7. Hi, Lisa! We moved away from the Portland area (Woodland, WA - but we went to Portland often) just four years ago. We kind of understood our situation then, but nothing like we do now. I wish I had a good excuse (and plenty of funds!) to visit there now, as we miss the area and the people we met/know there! And I wish I had some fantastic answer for you...
  8. Hey, Mmama, I am frustrated with doctors and the whole process too! I just keep plugging away at it because the issues are not just going away - no matter how hard I pray! Keep looking for doctors to work with you. It is not easy to find them. We are still going in circles. Our case is becoming so "rare" and "unusual" that they now want us to go...
  9. I always enjoy reading this blog post by Allergic Girl: Open Original Shared Link You are not the only one that has to have these important conversations!
  10. What a bummer! Thanks for sharing your experience. It helps to think through these things sometimes. And, YEAH for you - you *knew* to stop eating!! It is hardly consolation after getting glutened, but what a relief that you were able to prevent further exposure. And what a bummer about the asthma. Our family has combinations of celiac and gluten...
  11. One of our teachers typically ends up hospitalized a couple of times each year. How can we be better prepared for substitute teachers during the year? Thanks!
  12. Big Hugs, Mama! I understand some of your frustrations. I have a 2 1/2, 5, and 6 1/2 year old. And they aren't the *only* messy ones in the house either! I second the suggestion for trying to babywear some more. It can be tricky with a pukey, spitty baby, but there are strategies for that too. We use prefolds for mopping up those messes, but...
  13. One of my children and myself get frequent (often urgent) needs to urinate when we are exposed to gluten. It's a real bummer that so many doctors are so willing to overlook the *families* in all of this. I really don't understand their attitudes about gluten free living sometimes. Good luck figuring it out!
  14. We have experience with rashes that seem rooted in gluten exposure, although they do not sound exactly like what you are working with. We also have experience with going gluten free and not having knowledgeable doctors to work with. We went gluten free for one of our children because it was quite obvious that it needed to be done. The pediatrician and...
  15. Thanks for that link. We have successfully made some really awesome milks - primarily hemp, almond, hazelnut, cashew and pecan. But I cannot figure out a way to make it in bulk and store. It seems to have a shelf life of not quite a week for the ones that were not drunk immediately. I have considered a canning method, but don't know if that would work...
  16. No one in the class last year had nut allergies, and we also confirmed that everyone was doing well with corn. I haven't heard of any other food allergies in the new kindergarten class either, and about half of them were in the pre-k with no allergies. I think they make rice milk singles if that were a problem for anyone. I wish I could figure out how...
  17. How about adding more of other fats? Do you cook veggies with olive oil? And eating avocados frequently - can be eaten with eggs and potatoes for breakfast, with tuna/salmon/bean salad for lunch, with chicken/pork/beef and carrots/veggies for dinner - or hamburgers too. Add olive oils for your dressings. We try to make more and more of our own dressings...
  18. I am getting ready to prepare my kids' boxes for the school year. I am using 18x11x7 Sterilite containers. I plan to pack the following into the box (my kids are going into Kindergarten and 1st grade for reference): -a change of clothes -disposable plates -disposable bowls -disposable napkins -disposable forks and spoons (Zoopals have been a big...
  19. Big hugs, Mama! You are not alone!! We have three children (almost 3, 5, and almost 7), and all are very, very sensitive to gluten. I don't know what else to say to help, but you will find a rhythm to help navigate it all. Eating gluten free (dairy and soy free too) has been a blessing in so many ways for our family!
  20. Very interesting! I have been suspecting over the past year that getting glutened shortens my cycle, and it seems typically I will start two days after a bad (on my terms . . not cheating, not eating intentional, just screwing up in the total evaluation of eradicating gluten exposure) gluten event. If I am super conscientious about maintaining a truly gluten...
  21. I also have problems with airborne gluten, and I find that it can be harder for me to deal with than ingestion in some ways. It is much easier to quit eating than it is to quit breathing for any length of time - KWIM?? It was only recently that I was reflecting on my personal history. I realized that when I had my worst case of ?? (total lethargy,...
  22. We have a couple of recent hospital stays that went relatively well. The first was a six day stay for my 6 yo child. We met with the executive chef and dietician at least once/day, except over the weekend. We did not have any of our food supplies with us, as it was an unexpected admission. We were later able to supply them with some of our own food...
  23. Big hugs, Mama! We know gluten related tooth issues all to well. We did crown a molar, and we are on close watch to salvage as much of the two year molars as possible for our affected children. In my understanding, those molars are supposed to last for around 10 years and are very important to proper digestion. Those are the teeth that took the biggest...
  24. I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing their frustrations. It is really helpful sometimes to know that I am not the only one feeling SO frustrated. We are recovering from two hospital admissions for my oldest child for idiopathic reasons. We remain hopeful that the idiopathic reasons are in NO way related to trace gluten consumption ("gluten free...
  25. Thank you so much! This really made my day, and I really needed it!! It is the face of my super silly daughter who has taught me so much. She has been an amazing and incredible guide for our family on this gluten free journey.
