  1. "Food products that were not labeled as gluten-free but did not have obvious sources of the protein in the ingredient list were a problem. They found that 19.4 percent of these items had more than 20 ppm of gluten." Wow! I feel such a mix of emotions reading that sobering news. Thanks for posting such invaluable information. I am shocked by those results...
  2. At first glance to your post, my troubleshooting would be the eating process. When I eat at work everything is self-contained, and I even bring my own napkins. I stay out of the food preparation area all together. I do not use any refrigerators, utensils, cutting boards, toasters, etc. I assume from your post that you already have that down. It is confusing...
  3. And 9 years of elimination/observation testing, amongst other medical monitoring, has produced a single allergen for her, gluten. Yes, one can develop new allergies at any time. But her reaction was consistent with her past responses to gluten exposure. We have never observed these reactions in response to anything else. Her doctor kept asking, are you...
  4. I think it is fair to note here that our daughters only known allergen is gluten.
  5. I am not warning people off dental care! We can't avoid it, as we have dental complications due to early childhood gluten exposure. I just wanted to report that our family found the case study instrumental in managing our healthcare. Our orthodontist also found the case study meaningful and was relieved that the next scheduled retainers are made of a different...
  6. The symptoms were a chronic cough and continuous postnatal drip that eventuated in severe facial swelling. I took her to the orthodontist concerned we were having infection issues, as it seemed her body was in overdrive fighting....something? He assured me that she was not presenting with infection (we were already on acute allergy management for the symptoms...
  7. I drug out this old thread because my daughter had a reaction to her plate that was made from the same material as the retainer in this case study. We are still in the process of recovering from the reaction. The damage caused to my daughter's health from this exposure has been a struggle to recover from. I find it fascinating that the plastic manufacturer...
  8. I feel a little bit alone in this. Surely there are many of you that cope with celiac by trying to plough through medical research, aren't there? I have a hard time keeping it all straight sometimes. I am not a medical doctor, nor do I want to be in healthcare in any way. While he recommends reading published reports, I get frustrated by the limited access...
  9. We have found working with schools to be easier when we can give them information in a format they understand. I would get an Allergy Action Plan organised and ask your doctor sign it. You can download the form online and pre fill it. I usually take a prefilled form and a blank in case they object to how I have completed it. They have always signed it...
  10. The following article from the Celiac Support Association was super interesting to me. I am trying to digest it all and apologize if it has been posted here before. Open Original Shared Link I am always amazed at how much research our family has had to do to advocate for our health and wellness. In case my link is messed up, the article is: ...
  11. StephanieL, my kids were forced to eat secluded for "accommodation" of their gluten allergy in US schools. I don't recommend it, but it was the only way they could "tolerate" school and not end up hospitalised AGAIN for their gluten/wheat allergy. HappyPlace, I hope you can successfully negotiate for your son's health. We ended up consulting with Allergic...
  12. Any new shampoos or toiletries? Any dental or orthodontic work happening? Good luck figuring it out. It is really hard working through these seemingly idiopathic, chronic issues. Feels like looking for a needle in the haystack sometimes....ah, that just makes me sick to think about that haystack anymore!
  13. The potential of a kid dying due to allergies extends far beyond nut allergies. One of my children has anaphylactic wheat allergy and had to be hospitalised twice with emergency surgery before we could get the school to consider her needs seriously. I don't think most here generally oppose accommodating nut free school policies, but the "no one can eat...
  14. But the "policy" is fundamentally flawed, and that is the issue in my opinion. Technically, the home kitchen is a facility with nuts. I appreciate the severity of nut allergies, and we are very mindful of our own consumption to minimise/avoid risk to others. But policies that have to be ignored to be practical are dangerous. We ask which allergies are...
  15. Our experiences are in Australia, but we negotiated nut policies when we first came. Most if not all schools here are nut free, but they do not go to shared facility declarations for what others can eat. I don't think there is good basis for that. We were actually able to negotiate that our kids were allowed to bring nut milks because of their diet restrictions...
  16. Thank you for sharing this information! We are doing remedial orthodontic work to correct issues from bad teeth that formed prior to our understanding the severity of our gluten issues. And my gratefulness carries our usual caveat that our experiences are unique and not customary for most celiacs. Next disclaimer: in addition to our celiac issues, we...
  17. I can't figure out how to PM you....and I think this is for me. We resolved our school issues by moving to Australia. What a difference! A community that treats our celiac issues with care and respect makes ALL the difference in the world. Food manufacturers that are diligent, caring, and required to meet "no detectable gluten" has made our lives so seemingly...
  18. Zyrtec helps us with hives. You may want to also consider h. pylori. Good luck getting it sorted!
  19. Our kids are generally considered to have allergy and celiac (autoimmune) issues. They each are different in their responses, but all seem to cover both spectrums. Atopy or atopic is another word that can also be used to describe our general nature in addition to the celiac.
  20. Have you been tested for H. Pylori? I know it is a bacteria, but I hadn't seen any specific mentions of the bacteria/parasites that you have considered and investigated. Good luck getting it sorted, and I hope your trip to the celiac center is productive. I hope you find relief and improvement soon. Our journey to wellness took a very long time, many...
  21. We found cold wet cloths to be the most soothing treatment for this condition before we could figure out how to get rid of it. We tried using different oils (olive, coconut, jojoba, argan), but they never seemed to help much - well, they helped reduce the "cracking" that would happen when it would get really bad. We use shea butter in general for treating...
  22. Our family experiences gluten induced skin issues that seem to be "separate" from the celiac because we can get some relief with antihistamines (sometimes, not always). We are genetically at high risk for celiac, and the child that started us on this path has never in her life been able to tolerate any amount of gluten without horrible results. Since then...
  23. We ended up at a respected dermatologist trying to figure out our daughters eczema like issues that were horrid from exposures at school. Our dermatologist indicated that she sees gluten induced skin issues in patients separate from the classic celiac skin issue of DH. We were discussing the skin biopsy approach to verifying "celiac". Because it was not...
  24. I am curious how old your children are, as it would shape my comments. I would also be more concerned about risking my own health and wellness if our family ever contemplated a gluten challenge for family members. We currently maintain a gluten free home. Any kid challenges we do are low level (cross contamination) in situations where we want to try and...
  25. I am curious if you had a full coeliac blood panel test and what the results were. I would have the full coeliac panel done with checks on some common deficiencies, like iron.
