ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
weluvgators replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wanted to pop in and let you know that our family has had heaps of difficulties with diagnosis and protocol development in our journey. To make progress, our family adopted a gluten, dairy and soy free diet. We experienced some extensive complications that resulted in hospitalisations for one of my children, most likely due to chronic gluten exposure... -
ARCHIVED Insect Bites After Eating Bread
weluvgators replied to berserker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What you describe reminds me of how hives can present for some. People can also have wheat allergy (or other allergens). One can also have celiac and wheat allergy. According to our experiences and the dermatoligists and doctors that we have consulted, celiac and gluten intolerance can present in a wide variety of skin ailments. -
ARCHIVED High Alt And Ast Even After Gluten Free For 6 Months
weluvgators replied to NodakMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our middle child (of 3) was our family's canary. We have been gluten free for almost 7 years now, and it has been a long road for our family. We had a very difficult time understanding the severity of our gluten issues and have found the best guidance to come from those that are "Super Sensitive". We quickly realised that the severity of our middle child... -
ARCHIVED Managing Celiac When Your Child Is In Someone Else's Care
weluvgators replied to Adravis's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our kids have medical alert bracelets and allergy action plans signed by their doctor. All care providers are informed of the information, and we have always stated their celiac/allergies on enrollment forms. I hope your daughter feels better soon. We also reinforce required hand washing protocols and check any supplies (crafts, games, activities) being... -
ARCHIVED Inhalation Again - At Work - Very Worried
weluvgators replied to carolynmay's topic in Super Sensitive People
I have to be very careful with airborne exposures, as our family has wheat allergy in addition to celiac. We use Zyrtec for relief of bad exposures after trying for a long time to avoid, avoid, avoid....but sometimes it cannot be entirely avoided. My kids tell me it helps with their tummy distress, but it can be hard to make sense of kids reports....or... -
ARCHIVED M &m S
weluvgators replied to gfreemom72's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I find it interesting that all M&Ms in Australia have gluten. Why and how do they make the "same" candy (they look the same....no idea on taste) out of different ingredients? It is a good reminder for the global audience that food advice here can be region specific! While we have heaps of gluten free food here in Australia, our family imports from... -
ARCHIVED Chronic Urticaria (Hives) Common For celiac disease?
weluvgators replied to helenln0's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Open Original Shared Link We discovered an h. Pylori infection in one of our children with idiopathic, chronic, head to toe and roving hives with angioedema. Cold, wet cloths were probably the most soothing treatment that helped. We were running dual antihistamine dosing and still getting major flares with incidental exposures. We also discovered b... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
weluvgators replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Can anyone shed light on the meaning in the details of gluten free labelling here in Australia? Does "gluten" (with 0 or nil detected or something similar) in the nutrition label demonstrate with certainty that something has been tested? And what does it mean when something is labelled "gluten free" but does not list "gluten" in the nutritional analysis... -

ARCHIVED How Do You Keep A Mixed Kitchen Without Glutening Your Child?
weluvgators replied to kb27's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How are you washing dishes? I think it is necessary to have designated sponges and cleaning/drying cloths for the gluten free person. And Gluten free dishes should be washed before/separately from glutened dishes in a hand wash scenario. Has the toaster been shared? Toaster needs to be gluten free for him to use at all. Aluminum foil helps us in a pinch... -
I just wanted to share that we have found Zyrtec to be really helpful in managing our skin flare ups. It has been trial and error, but we now use Zyrtec as a first line of defence in helping to relieve the pain and itching that we get. Daily Zyrtec for a few weeks cleared up a chronic elbow rash that was not responding to anything else. And the Zyrtec...

ARCHIVED So Frustrated... Daughter Keeps Getting Glutened.
weluvgators replied to Mom2-2girls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We have a family of super sensitive mom and three kids. We are much, much more sensitive to ambient gluten exposure than many/most celiacs. We have gluten reactions when a "celiac" should not (we have wheat allergy in addition to celiac). We had to scale back to whole, unprocessed foods prepared in our home (100% gluten free as much as humanly possible... -
ARCHIVED I Forgot, Then I Remembered And Now I Really Remember!
weluvgators replied to AnnJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A contaminated colander would do me in. And the metal slotted spoon that I tried as a quick colander solution didn't work out for me in a pinch at my parents house either. Now my parents keep a dedicated colander for us to use. We also tend to travel with safe cutting board, knife and basic cooking utensils. Good luck getting back to good health! -
ARCHIVED An Aussie G'day!
weluvgators replied to Brownie88's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hello from Perth! It took a bit for us to understand how important an unprocessed foods diet was for us. We were living in the States and recently moved to Australia, in part because living gluten free is proving to be much easier for us here. We really enjoy going to all the farmer markets that are available here. If you do get cravings, just go for... -
ARCHIVED Am I Celiac Or Is This Just A Severe Gluten Allergy?
weluvgators replied to emwa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello! Our family is in Perth, and we love how much easier it has been for us to navigate our coeliac / gluten allergy issues here compared to our experiences in the States. My kids and myself have both coeliac and gluten allergy issues, so it can be difficult to distinguish between the two for some. We have been advised by our doctors to maintain our...- 3 replies

ARCHIVED Girlfriend Making Me Sick And Dont Know Why
weluvgators replied to deals88's topic in Super Sensitive People
Since you suspect hair, I wanted to share a bit of our experience. We have found hair products to be suspect on many occasions, but we have also had our share of problems with people who are in high risk environments, like pancake house, pizza parlour, drywall work, so potential airborne exposure that settle in hair. So you may also want to consider if... -
ARCHIVED Being Celiac In America Is Unacceptable!
weluvgators replied to Mennoknight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Our family moved from America to Australia, and it has been fabulous. I appreciate the more stringent labelling and inspections in Australia. And best of all is the abundance of "no detectable gluten" food that can be found in so many places here. I really hope that Australia maintains their current standards and that other countries follow their lead... -
ARCHIVED Reception Dinner Etiquette
weluvgators replied to Songbirdy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have tried not eating at events and bringing my own (in cases where accommodating my food requirements was not possible). I have found that people respond better when I have something to eat while they are dining. When I simply didn't eat, I had far more comments and questions....people "worried" I was hungry, why wasn't I eating, etc. on my last excursion... -
We got some relief for our DD using a combination of antihistamines. Ultimately, we found she had a chronic infection of H. Pylori that we treated. Treating her H. Pylori infection seemed to help her condition, and I have since found references to H. Pylori and chronic urticaria. Our DD also has a complicated and severe gluten allergy, but the hiving issues...

ARCHIVED Celiac Vs. Wheat Allergy?
weluvgators replied to horsemechanic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Our family has a history of individuals with *both* celiac and wheat allergy. We do have to watch out for both wheat and gluten and have found that we tend to be more sensitive than what is currently considered "standard" sensitivity for a celiac. We have worked with general practitioners, allergists, gastroenterologists and gluten intolerant specialists... -
ARCHIVED Broken Bones?
weluvgators replied to Kelsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board! Our family has been gluten free for six years now - best thing that ever happened to us in many ways. I have one child (my 8 yo DD) that has neurological issues that seem to be related to gluten. It has probably been a contributing factor to her broken bones. Sounds quite a bit different than what you are dealing with, and that is... -
We do not eat out often, but when we find a restaurant that can cater to our needs, we do enjoy it! As an allergic mom to three young, allergic kids, eating out or being able to get takeaway can be an incredible relief in our schedules. We do pack a lot of food, and I do not eat at casual social gatherings unless it is the food I brought and have kept segregated...

Ooohh, thanks for sharing this note. I have been using liquid only because that is what we always have on hand since I am dealing with kids. I recently got tablet form because it seems easier to always keep it in my purse or to just carry it in my pocket (so much smaller!) . . . but I have not yet trialed the tablet form. I also appreciate that I can do...

You may also want to check out catsmeow posts about introducing Zantac to help with her wheat allergy. We have found it helpful to work with a doctor group that specialises in gluten intolerance, in addition to our other doctors (as they each seem to figure out different pieces). The gluten intolerance doctors were able to identify a complicating infection...

Welcome to the board! It sounds like you may be dealing with allergy issues in addition to possible celiac complications. We have found it necessary to work with a team of doctors because we have been unable to find a single doctor to manage both our allergies and our celiac. I did find conventional allergy testing helpful, although it was a difficult...
