  1. OK I have to add my .02. I never understood the cal/mag supplement because everything I've read said that both elements share the same cell receptors. So if you take them separately you get better absorption.

I'm a celiac with constipation. If I skip the mag before bed, I get leg cramps in the night and don't "go" in the morning. I need the mag to allow my muscles to relax. I take my cal and vitamin D in the morning.

If I was celiac with "d" I think I would skip the mag.

    Hope this helps,

  2. Well, for me it's all traces. My body does not digest it. The small amounts just hang out in there until there is a bunch of it (lactic acid buildup?) and then I'm really sick (cramps and D) for a day. The lingering effects are swelling in my hands and feet and pain in my lower back. It feels like the hip bone to the left of my spine is "out". I have a long drive to work, then ten hours on my feet running around on a cement floor, then another long ride home. Without traces of dairy, I enjoy the radio and the time away from my kids, pets, customers, co-workers. With dairy the ride is a painful chore.

Also I would question whether repeated irritation and swelling would eventually cause permanent damage like arthiritis in my joints. scarring?

Maybe different for others, hope this helps,

    RA

  3. Lays potato chips Classics got me a couple of times. But it was a couple of times out of hundreds of servings. When I have the choice I buy Better Made instead now because they are "Made in Michigan" with Michigan (and several other states) grown potatoes and have stopped using soy oil. A company representative assured me that the only source of gluten in the factory is the BBQ flavoring used on some of the chips. The lines are steam cleaned between batches. I believe Lays uses the same steam cleaning process but they have more products that do contain gluten so the chances for CC are higher.

Maybe I should write letters to both companies asking them the use a dedicated line for gluten free items.

    Love my chips!

  4. My Aunt Susan died from cancer in her intestines at the age of 39 after many years of GI problems. I remember seeing her take laxative when I was about 14yrs old, so she would have been about 35 then. But I agree with Gemini, our need for a healthy diet probably decreases our risks far below the Burger King and preservative eating general population.

  5. I'm not sure how to do this without sounding harsh so let me just put this out there. I didn't recognise my son's illness. He would be volatile then incredibly remorseful. He had a hissy fit and intentionally crashed into an empty parked car while taking steroids and antibiotics for strep. But instead of being 8 yrs old like your son, he was 17. He was sent to prison last Wednesday. He will be there for 2 1/2 to 10 years. I'm thankful that nobody was physically harmed and that we now know he has celiacs not bipolar disorder or worse but my heart is broken just the same.

Please take you child's behaviour and reactions as seriously as you possibly can.

  6. Hello Everyone,

Over the last week or so meat has become repellent to me. It smells bad, looks funny. Looking back it seems that I have been unconciously choosing other foods like eggs and peanut butter for most of my meals for several weeks. Also my low blood sugar is not reacting to skipping meals or just eating fruit and coffee. I know this can't healthy .........

What the heck is happening to me? Why does meat smell bad to me? Do I need another vitamin or should I just go vegetarian?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you RA

  7. Hello,

I also got worse for a while. Went from explosive D to horrible C and had pains in odd places like left wrist, left ankle, lower back. It was very frustrating. I am so thankful for this website. With each new pain or worry I was able to seach and find and answer like that my ankle and wrist pain was a sign that I had been glutened. All the pain being on one side was a mineral defiency.

Hang in there, it will get better,

    RA

  8. Hello everyone,

I know this was stupid and I should have thought of it ahead of time but if it can happen to me maybe it could happen to other busy folks.

A co-worker brought in cherry tomatoes from his garden in a reused plastic grocery bag. I grabbed one out of the bag, rubbed it clean on my shirt and popped it in my mouth. A couple hours latter I'm wondering how I got glutened from cherry tomatoes. It had to have been whatever the bag was used for originally. All I can think of is how flour leaks out of those paper bags and gets all over everything.

Another good reason to stop using those plastic sacks and to wash my veggies!

Hope this helps protect someone else,

  9. My elimination diet was very basic...

    chicken breast

    low carb veggies

    lemon juice

carrots were in there but I found that I was reacting to those.

eggs were the first thing I brought back in

then rice, potatoes, berries, avacado I don't remember the order but you get the idea

no dairy, no soy, no chemicals just simple one ingredient real food

  10. Chicken breast - just throw it into the slow cooker, bag and freeze. We reheat it in olive oil and spices and dump it on a salad, use it in omlettes, throw on some Baby Ray's or salsa. It's pretty versatile and easy for people who don't like to cook to use without making a bunch of dishes.

  11. Hi Ann, I love it when people put in a whole bunch of responses to a question. I always find something that I wouldn't have thought of on my own! I did want to add or reiterate a couple of points............

    1. Dog Food - I have to buy grain free dog food. I've been sick twice from breathing dog food dust, once from pouring the big bag into the feeder, once from vacuuming up dog food the mice had hidden in a storage closet.

    2. coconut milk - it really helped me keep my healthy fats and energy up when I was sick and afraid to eat anything. I fried my eggs in it, I poured it in my coffee, dipped my meat in it......

    3. veggies - I developed allergies to some of my favorite veggies. I think it was a leaky gut thing. But those allergies have subsided. Celery was really hard on me for a bit so anything with celery seed in it like ketchup was impossible. Its only been 5 months since my dx and celery doesn't bother me at all anymore.

I hope you are feeling better soon! :)

  12. My tests came back negative but he has still given me a letter to confirm that I am gluten intolerant.

My son's blood work also came back negative but our Dr. wrote a letter saying that he needed to be allowed to maintain a gluten free diet. For those who haven't already heard his story........my son has neurologic responses to gluten, as well as skin and GI responses. In June '08, when he was 17 yrs old, he was so sick, angry and frustrated that he intentionally crashed his car into a parked car. While in jail, where his diet was bologna, bread and ramen noodles, he was even sicker and was taking tylenol, sudafed, imodium, antibiotics, steroids and was hearing voices so a psychotropic probably should have been prescribed. When my sister bailed him out we took him to several dr's and he spent some time in a hospital. It was celiacs. He has gone to court for sentencing twice. At the last court date the lawyers started yelling at each other and the judge revoked Justin's bond. So he has been back in jail for two weeks. Because of the Dr's letter the jail is providing Justin with a gluten free diet. He is clear headed and healthy but scared. Today we go back to court. There are 10 of us going in two cars to show the judge that Justin has friends and family who love him and want him to come home.

Without that letter from the Dr. my son would be in a much more serious situation. He would be back to being physically and mentally ill in a jail full of people who saw him as an easy target. Last year they beat him up and stoled his commissary goods. This year nothing has happened yet.

Enough ranting from this worried mom, I just wanted to make the point that the letter from the Dr was very important for us.

  13. I have seen information about lactose intolerance and celiac disease - but why would it happen now after 7 months? Could it be related to the reaction I had last week? Is this all a part of becoming more sensitive?

    Anyone have any insight?

    Jenna - Buffalo, NY

Hello Jennalin, You may want to read a bit about leaky gut. Some celiacs are able to digest lactose once the villi heal but for others ......... I developed allergies to dairy protein, soy, carrots, celery, and sweet potatoes over a very short period of time. These were foods I had been eating frequently when I became ill. My "allergic reaction" to dairy and soy are nearly the same as being lactose intolerant, cramps and D, but are not helped by taking lactaid before eating. These allergies were diagnosed by skin test and I have tested myself on the dairy once since then with a small amount of butter. My reaction wasn't as horrible as it used to be but it did take me several days to get back to normal.

    Hope this helps, RA

  14. We found these great little bottles of almond milk that my kids love! Fruit cups, meat sticks, chex mix (rice chex, nuts, gluten free pretzels, raisins and m&m's) gluten free brownies, jello...... and find a way to make coconut milk pudding, pudding is a must according to my kids! The kids will want to trade stuff, so they need to know what it is safe to trade. Snickers and M&M's from their friends lunchable is OK the crackers are not.

I know you're gonna want to tell them "no trading" but it won't work for long because they want to be the same as everyone else. You just have to make the lunch you pack better than a lunchable.

  15. Yes, it would stupid of them. It was stupid of the chinese to put melamine in pet food and baby formula but they did it. Sorry, if it seems that I am intentionally being disagreeable. That is not my intention. I just believe it is safer to eat foods that don't need a label at all. Buying your berries in season and freezing them yourself is smarter, cheaper, and safer.

    Take care RA
