ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Is Whey Ok Or Not
OptimisticMom42 replied to scarlet's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet eating her curds and whey! Think cottage cheese..... If you're not dairy allergic or lactose intolerant it's fine. We have three celiacs in our house. Only one, me, who is dairy allergic. The one that took me awhile was cellulose. If it says cellulose in the ingredients I do some research before buying it now... -
ARCHIVED Any One Here Have Foot Pain When They Eat Gluten?
OptimisticMom42 replied to Lynayah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's only in my left foot and ankle. But yes when I eat things I souldn't (lately it's been small traces of soy) my left ankle hurts. I limp down the hall to the bathroom in the morning, after I get moving it's just an ache. And it goes away when I'm eating clean. -
OK I have to add my .02. I never understood the cal/mag supplement because everything I've read said that both elements share the same cell receptors. So if you take them separately you get better absorption. I'm a celiac with constipation. If I skip the mag before bed, I get leg cramps in the night and don't "go" in the morning. I need the mag to allow...

Yeah!!! Little hands, little feet, great big smiles! Congratulations! -
Well, for me it's all traces. My body does not digest it. The small amounts just hang out in there until there is a bunch of it (lactic acid buildup?) and then I'm really sick (cramps and D) for a day. The lingering effects are swelling in my hands and feet and pain in my lower back. It feels like the hip bone to the left of my spine is "out". I have a long...

ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Items That "got You"
OptimisticMom42 replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lays potato chips Classics got me a couple of times. But it was a couple of times out of hundreds of servings. When I have the choice I buy Better Made instead now because they are "Made in Michigan" with Michigan (and several other states) grown potatoes and have stopped using soy oil. A company representative assured me that the only source of gluten in... -

ARCHIVED ? For Vegetarian Celiacs
OptimisticMom42 replied to OptimisticMom42's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks everyone, I think I will check on-line for some good recipes and just go vegetarian for a bit and see if this passes. I wonder how humus tastes on rice cakes? Celiac-mommy, no I'm not expecting. We love babies but the next one in our house better be a grandchild! -
ARCHIVED Another Hidden Source Of Gluten.
OptimisticMom42 replied to Timetrvlr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Could you be having a problem with powdered milk? It's in a lot of soups and processed meats and for some people the reaction to dairy protein allergy and gluten ingestion are very much alike. Hope this helps RA -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Cancer
OptimisticMom42 replied to twe0708's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My Aunt Susan died from cancer in her intestines at the age of 39 after many years of GI problems. I remember seeing her take laxative when I was about 14yrs old, so she would have been about 35 then. But I agree with Gemini, our need for a healthy diet probably decreases our risks far below the Burger King and preservative eating general population. Take... -
ARCHIVED Any Symptomatic Relief Suggestions For My 3 Yr Old Son
OptimisticMom42 replied to RoccosMOM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello, On the advise of a pharmacist, I started using childrens liquid Rite Aid brand clear antihistamine for my DH. I was surprised to find that it also shortened the length of time my GI upset lasts. Hope this helps RA -
ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction 4 Hrs Later?
OptimisticMom42 replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm not sure how to do this without sounding harsh so let me just put this out there. I didn't recognise my son's illness. He would be volatile then incredibly remorseful. He had a hissy fit and intentionally crashed into an empty parked car while taking steroids and antibiotics for strep. But instead of being 8 yrs old like your son, he was 17. He was sent... -
Hello Everyone, Over the last week or so meat has become repellent to me. It smells bad, looks funny. Looking back it seems that I have been unconciously choosing other foods like eggs and peanut butter for most of my meals for several weeks. Also my low blood sugar is not reacting to skipping meals or just eating fruit and coffee. I know this can't healthy...

ARCHIVED Worsening Symptoms Since gluten-free
OptimisticMom42 replied to shevyo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello, I also got worse for a while. Went from explosive D to horrible C and had pains in odd places like left wrist, left ankle, lower back. It was very frustrating. I am so thankful for this website. With each new pain or worry I was able to seach and find and answer like that my ankle and wrist pain was a sign that I had been glutened. All the pain... -
ARCHIVED Weird Ways We've Been Glutened
OptimisticMom42 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello everyone, I know this was stupid and I should have thought of it ahead of time but if it can happen to me maybe it could happen to other busy folks. A co-worker brought in cherry tomatoes from his garden in a reused plastic grocery bag. I grabbed one out of the bag, rubbed it clean on my shirt and popped it in my mouth. A couple hours latter I... -

O.K. here's my favorite so far........Twice people have responded to my "I can't have dairy" with "Oh, then you can't have eggs!" The first time I was shocked but the second time I was ready with "What kind of cow do you get your eggs from?" -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diets
OptimisticMom42 replied to Lisa79's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My elimination diet was very basic... chicken breast low carb veggies lemon juice carrots were in there but I found that I was reacting to those. eggs were the first thing I brought back in then rice, potatoes, berries, avacado I don't remember the order but you get the idea no dairy, no soy, no chemicals just simple one ingredient... -
ARCHIVED Food To Freeze
OptimisticMom42 replied to lizard00's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Chicken breast - just throw it into the slow cooker, bag and freeze. We reheat it in olive oil and spices and dump it on a salad, use it in omlettes, throw on some Baby Ray's or salsa. It's pretty versatile and easy for people who don't like to cook to use without making a bunch of dishes. -
Her symptoms are so different from mine that I'm totally lost on wether this is a gluten reaction, a yeast reaction to the antibiotic or an allergic reaction to something (meds, foods, campfire smoke?). So anyone out there with IC that experienced painful bumps on the back of the tongue?
-
Hi Ladies, A quick question. A friend Kayla (17 yr old girl) was dx'ed IC awhile back. She went gluten free right away. All the symptoms went away. It was to good to be true right? Well she gave herself a gluten challenge by eating two chicken McNuggets. The symptoms came right back, she took the meds her dr. had prescribed (Prosed and sulfamethoxazole...

ARCHIVED Is Fresh Produce Glutened? Help!
OptimisticMom42 replied to ann72601's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ann, I love it when people put in a whole bunch of responses to a question. I always find something that I wouldn't have thought of on my own! I did want to add or reiterate a couple of points............ 1. Dog Food - I have to buy grain free dog food. I've been sick twice from breathing dog food dust, once from pouring the big bag into the feeder... -
ARCHIVED What The Doctor Said
OptimisticMom42 replied to KathiSharpe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son's blood work also came back negative but our Dr. wrote a letter saying that he needed to be allowed to maintain a gluten free diet. For those who haven't already heard his story........my son has neurologic responses to gluten, as well as skin and GI responses. In June '08, when he was 17 yrs old, he was so sick, angry and frustrated that he intentionally... -
ARCHIVED Do You Become More Or Less Sensitive To Gluten Over Time?
OptimisticMom42 replied to NYCCeliacMom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello Jennalin, You may want to read a bit about leaky gut. Some celiacs are able to digest lactose once the villi heal but for others ......... I developed allergies to dairy protein, soy, carrots, celery, and sweet potatoes over a very short period of time. These were foods I had been eating frequently when I became ill. My "allergic reaction" to dairy... -
