  1. I second the motion to get rid of the doctor, but want to point out that the candida theory isn't accepted by the medical community, which is worth keeping in mind when you talk to doctors, because they'll often dismiss it. There's no evidence to support it.
  2. HA! I love dark humor.
  3. Right. It's an auto-immune disease, like type 1 diabetes (no cure), lupus (no cure), etc. Don't give up those foods unless you have a legitimate intolerance to them. Further, most doctors don't believe that candida overgrowth can actually cause disease, and there is no evidence to support that theory. I'm ducking behind my couch as I write this because...
  4. Gluten is only a problem when it's digested, but cosmetics and shampoo and things like that can get into your mouth pretty easily. I don't worry at all about things like eye shadow, but I shoot for gluten-free lip stuff (chapstick, gloss, whatever) and lotion, unless I'm going to wash my hands right after putting the lotion on my legs or whatever. I know...
  5. It's definitely worth the stop! I highly recommend the cioppino. Naturally gluten-free and delicious!

    ARCHIVED St. Pete?

I'm going on a last-minute trip to St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday and will be there for four days. Anyone have a particular favorite restaurant that does well with gluten-free?
  7. Hi, I'm sorry I didn't see this! It's Fresco Italian, and its website is here: Open Original Shared Link Enjoy!!
  8. I think a lot of things are like that. For instance, to me, carrots taste like death and I can hardly choke down dark chocolate, or black coffee. I don't even have that much of a sweet tooth, so I think the issue is more about bitterness than about needing more sugar; I don't really like coffee no matter what's done to it and haven't had any in a long time...
  9. I tried an Envirokids peanut butter rice bar last night, in the name of research. It was surprisingly big for the caloric value, and wasn't bad, but didn't really feel like it was doing much for me nutritionally. I could live without ever having another one, but it could grow on me. I don't mind the Glutino frozen pizza crusts, but it's been so long since...
  10. Aw maaaaan, I just bought some of those to take to Ecuador with me. Le sigh. I, for one, do not want to get within 17 yards of Ener-G bread. Ever. Again. *Shudders* Oh, have any of you ever tried the Hol-Grain brown rice "crackers"? They taste... worse than soil. I can't even call them crackers without the quotes, because I'm not entirely sure they...
  11. This is something there's been a lot of debate about lately. It depends, I think, on how you're measuring "worse." Some of us have bad reactions to it, but the studies looked more at things like caloric impact and effect on blood sugar levels, which worked out to be about the same (though no one is advocating its use - but we also need, as a society, to watch...
  12. That's good advice, and I, for one, will definitely keep it in mind. I'm so sorry for your loss.
  13. Oh, wow, am I ever in the same boat. I'm even hoping to start having kids in three years, and I'm worried, too. I haven't quite wrestled this celiac disease to the ground yet (see another post about my lamenations over Chex, hehe) but I'm hoping that by then it won't be a big deal. I'm also worried about passing celiac on to my kids, which is making me wonder...
  14. First of all, your dog is completely adorable. Some people have strong stomachs, and I'm jealous. I never have (can't eat red meat or drink alcohol either), and I've always been jealous of people who can eat whatever! Enjoy on my behalf as well!
  15. I have the exact same reaction to Sweet Baby Ray's. I think that's what got me to give up HFCS in the first place. I need to find a good alternative, because my boyfriend loves barbecued chicken more than just about anything (and I agree that it's good, but I've kind of lost my appetite for it after SBR's made me sick). I'll give Annie's a try and see how...
  16. That's very true. Regular sugar is also totally empty calories and has the same effect on blood sugar and whatnot. I think some people don't do well with corn products in general. For me, I think it's more of a psychological reaction to seeing a whole bunch of Frankenfood ingredients on a label. I try to get my sugars from fruit and the complex carbohydrates...
  17. One of the quotes I actually live by is Michael Pollan's: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."
  18. Hi! Yeah, HFCS kind of makes me gag. So does really high-sodium stuff. I don't each much BBQ sauce or ketchup, but you might try Annie's Naturals. I've also just started making my own salad dressings and that kind of thing, because I read the ingredients list on the Kraft stuff I usually get and turned a little green. The thing is, I think most Americans...
  19. Sigh. Are there any good, reasonably inexpensive, reasonably healthy cereals out there? I'm not into Kix and coco puffs and that kind of thing (cinnamon Chex is about as far down that path as I'll go) but I can't afford EnviroKids all the time either.
  20. Ugh. I didn't see barley malt in the strawberry, but can we assume the "mixed tocopherols" are safe?
  21. I was having problems with the cinnamon one too. Today I went to the store and decided to look at the ingredients list again. Barley malt. My freakin grocery store put them in the gluten free section even though these are apparently STILL the pre-gluten-free ones. I am ashamed to admit that I cried. Aaaaaaaaaaargh.
  22. Clap clap clap
  23. Hi! I just posted to the doctors forum about this, but the doctor I use is Dr. Burns at Digestive Disease Associates. There really isn't much around here for celiacs, but if you go to the new Publix on Archer by Target, they have a whole gluten-free section that's just great.
  24. I just saw this!! I live in Gainesville, and I see Dr. Burns at Digestive Disease Associates. He's a very nice guy, and don't let the fact that he still calls it "sprue" dissuade you. He's a really great doctor and has helped me a lot. E-mail me at jess_clawson@yahoo.com if you want to discuss celiac in Gainesville more.
  25. I agree completely with all of this and also applaud its directness. One thing I think it sometimes takes awhile to learn is that no one else is ever going to care about your celiac disease as much as you are (with the exception of your parents, if you're dependent on them), even if they love you and care an awful lot. It's your health, it's your body, you...
