  1. I have gluten-like reactions to things like barbecue sauce, even if they're gluten-free, because they almost always have high fructose corn syrup in them, and I think that just doesn't sit well with me. Also, if I get too much sodium, I feel sick. I don't know if either of those are your problem, of course - just throwing it out there. Good luck, and I hope...
  2. When I had mine done, they wanted to check out my colon health (I'm 27, so it wasn't time for my baseline test or anything) because, apparently, celiacs can have a lot of other problems and they also wanted to look for other issues in case it wasn't celiac (even though my blood tests were positive). You and your doctor will have to figure that out.
  3. Heh, wow. If they do a diagnostic endoscopy they will do a colonoscopy as well to check for other damage and possible problems. So yes. You aren't even awake and won't remember a thing, though, so it's not a big deal.
  4. Well, celiac isn't an allergy, so you wouldn't be having an allergic reaction. Also, the skin is the biggest organ, but it isn't a digestive organ. For things to penetrate the skin and get into the bloodstream, they have to be particularly tiny (gluten is not) and/or be attached to some agent that essentially pushes them through the skin, like DMSO. Is it...
  5. That's very true. My boyfriend (who does not have celiac disease) developed symptoms similar to mine when I'm glutened, but he had salmonella (he's traveling, too, and had to find a medical clinic in a pretty remote area!). I think it's easy to assume a lot of things are from gluten that aren't, necessarily.
  6. This is what I love about this website. I am having this problem too, read these posts, called my doctor, and he can get me in on Monday! I would have had no idea what questions to ask, and now I do. Thanks so much to all of you!
  7. Ha! That is soooo true!
  8. Why does it matter to you what the server thinks? I guarantee you she doesn't go back to the kitchen after taking your order thinking about you as a weakling, and her level of attractiveness does not affect that at all. I waited tables for a long time and, frankly, I wanted all my customers to have the meal they wanted, and to enjoy their dining experience...
  9. Ooh, I have heat intolerance too. It never occurred to me that it might be celiac-related, and I'm not convinced that it is. Then again, I live in Florida, and no one really tolerates the heat here, so I'd have no idea if gluten-free was working in that regard. Fingers crossed for both of us.
  10. Ooo, cutting boards. I am such a maroon. I've been using our regular old plastic cutting boards (and plastic mixing/slotted spoons and spatulas), which have all gone through the dishwasher but which have all definitely been glutened. Am I potentially glutening myself?
  11. I agree that the endoscopy is done. I had a diagnostic endoscopy/biopsy and it all went fine, but it's up to you and your doctor. The doctor was able to see how atrophied my small intestine was and give me some feedback, which I've found useful (as does he) but that is not always the case, either. Everyone has to make the individual call on this one, I think...
  12. Unless there are more substantive similarities, though, that sounds like essentially every book about celiac disease. A "Living with Celiac" section and advice to shop the outer aisles of the grocery store is pretty run-of-the-mill. I am NOT an Elisabeth Hasslebeck defender in general, but neither Fox nor TMZ had anything to say that convinced me that the...
  13. I do too. I have a gluten reaction from Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, which is totally fine for most people.
  14. I have heard that there is one place MSG can come from (Korea? I forget) that may mean it contains wheat, but pretty much nothing in the US contains that kind of MSG. I have done zero research into this, but I'll try to look up where I heard it and see if I can track it down. My understanding is that it mostly affects celiacs who travel to that place in Asia...
  15. I agree, Roda. Being glutened is a terrible thing, certainly. I don't think it's worse than the result of not getting vaccinated, though. I keep hearing about entire neighborhoods that had to be quarantined because one family didn't vaccinate and then traveled and caught a disease in a foreign country, or caught one from someone else who went to a foreign...
  16. I have recently begun to have this reaction to Dr. Pepper, too. I don't drink soda much, and a few months ago vowed to cut it out unless I have a REALLY bad headache. A couple bad rounds with Dr. Pepper and I'm completely off it. I wonder what it is about that one? I can do other Pepsi products just fine.
  17. I heard an interview with the director, and it sounds pretty great! If it ever comes to Sticksville I'm going to go see it. In the meantime, we can all re-read Fast Food Nation and commit to avoiding McDonalds all over again.
  18. Yes, definitely toast it (in a safe toaster!). I found the frozen bread so inedible (and we don't have a Whole Foods here in Sticksville, so I can't get the good stuff) that I caved and started making my own. With a bread maker and some mixes it's really not a big time-suck, and it tastes SO much better. I freeze what I'm not going to eat within a couple...
  19. Ooh! I just thought of something else. You could make quinoa, and add in spices that you'd put in chili (cumin, chili powder, cinnamon, crushed red pepper, whatever) and also add in beans, corn, cilantro, tomatoes, and lime juice. Quinoa's really flexible, and surprisingly popular despite its wacky name. You could also probably just make this with rice, too...
  20. Any time! Let me know what you think if you try it. I'm supposed to be talking with my beloved caterer for my entirely-gluten-free wedding soon, and if she has any great ideas that sound like non-caterers could make, I'll post them somewhere on these boards.
  21. I agree with everything NorthernElf said, and want to add one more thought: that it's also good to change up your routine every couple of weeks. So, if you lift first and run after, switch that for a bit. Try doing different cardio, or changing up the way you combine the muscle groups you work (does that make sense?). Sometimes I do half my cardio before...
  22. Hi! I totally hear you on the difficulty-of-potlucks thing. I make this dish all the time, for non-celiacs and non-vegetarians, and everyone loves it: Barbecued Baked Lentils 3 c. water (you might need a little more) 2 c. dried brown lentils 1/2 tsp. salt, divided 1 c. diced onion 2/3 c. gluten-free ketchup (I had some low-sodium gluten-free ketchup...
  23. I completely agree, and don't think this is limited to people with celiac disease. Look how many "quick fix" diet plans are out there, and every year there's a new pill that promises to actually work this time, you guys, no really, we mean it now. They never work. The only way to really be healthy is to eat a balanced diet and exercise. Some people are naturally...
  24. I think both have their advantages (for one, in the oven, you don't have a dent in the middle of the loaf where the paddle was, but it's more labor-intensive). I have a brand-new breadmaker and it doesn't have that problem. I really love it, actually, and it has a gluten-free setting! Most packaged mixes require the white bread setting, but it's good for...
  25. I actually just had a doctor on the phone, and her response was, "Yeah, right." She's someone who's pretty open to natural remedies and definitely open to new ideas, and she said that you can actually hurt yourself a lot with this stuff, aside from the possibility that it's just masking the symptoms of the disease and you're still getting intestinal damage...
