About Me

I've not been diagnosed Celiac, nor do I intend to go through that process.

After Gastric Bypass surgery 6 years ago, I've developed a series of nutritional problems and reproductive problems.

When I'd been told about how bad my hemoglobin, iron levels and red blood cells were working, I started researching. The main reason I'm gluten free is to reduce competition in my intestines so that I have a shot at iron being absorbed.

I'm sticking to this idea until my doc disagrees with my assessment. So far, he's on board. I haven't been gluten-free long enough to heal any damage that I may have.

  1. An anemia panel is probably what you should have drawn - Anemia Panel CBC w/ Diff and Platelets, Ferritin, Folates (Folic Acid), Vitamin B 12, TIBC with iron and Reticulocyte Count This will tell you enough about B vitamins and will give you a baseline Iron level.
  2. Janie - I've been receiving monthly iron infusions because of anemia. Been gluten-free for about 6 months now. I tried for three months to do oral iron - ferrous gluconate rather than ferrous sulfate - but that didn't work for me. If all you need is an annual infusion, that's great - I'd say do it if it makes you feel dramatically better. I've been so anemic...
  3. If you are a 'regular' at a cafe type breakfast restaurant - usually they will try to accommodate you. I still get eggs with cheese & veggies and potatoes, no toast. When I come in now, they put a separate, clean pan on the grill just for me. Very little risk of cross contamination that way. I'd say just ask if you can have your breakfast made in a new...
  4. I took Cymbalta a few years ago. I can say the withdrawals from that drug have made it so that I refuse to touch another psychological pharmaceutical ever again. The side effects do go away. After a LONG time. I had the brain zaps for two months! The nausea calmed down after about a week. The anxiety after a few weeks. I hope you have better luck and...
  5. I'm not familiar with Wick Fowler's taco seasoning, but I've had issues with other taco seasoning. Little hidden ingredients can be an issue.
  6. Well, anemia is a byproduct of a long period, not a cause. Sounds like my periods when I'm untreated for endometriosis. Frequent, long, heavy periods that are quite painful.
  7. My favorite tortillas are Ole Corn Tortillas...they are inexpensive and come in a large package (and they're available at my local grocer, not some specialty store). I actually fry mine in a little bit of olive oil to improve the taste. Not enough oil to make them greasy, but to make them soft and pliable, as well as add a little flavor.
  8. A lot of people have issues with blood counts of varying nature. I'd have your doc run a more comprehensive metabolic panel and check your trace elements and minerals. Iron is a common deficiency in celiac.
  9. McD's fries are NOT gluten free. The beef flavor they use in them is a wheat based product. Its not cross contamination. And its even listed in their ingredients list. Open Original Shared Link Ingredeints: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose...
  10. There are quite a few options when it comes to fast food. My favorite is Wendy's. They have lots of options like chili and baked potato that are safe. They also have a great gluten free list on their website.
  11. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  12. Have you tried different types of iron. Most common is ferrous sulfate. I have major issues with ferrous sulfate, but have been able to tolerate ferrous gluconate much better. I don't know if I'm absorbing it...re-tests are in a few weeks. However it might be worth researching and considering alternative forms of iron before you try the infusions.
  13. You'd mentioned anemia. Anemia takes some time to fix on gluten-free diet. And the gluten-free diet may not make a difference in your anemia. I've been told because I'm cutting out easy energy, and the iron still isn't getting absorbed, I'm going to be tired. And, depending on your particular ferritin levels, you may require other interventions (shots, pills...
  14. I'd wondered if they'd done an endoscopy to verify that you hadn't had a complete closure of the remainder of the bile duct. I've had something like this happen, but with gastric bypass surgery.
  15. Heinz Ketchup is labeled "GLUTEN FREE".
