    ARCHIVED Boston's

Ooh... there's one of these near my work. I'll have to check it out.
  3. I have no answers for you, but I wanted to send you encouragement! Have you discussed this with your doctors? It almost sounds like you should be doing this in a rehab center... sheesh. I hope it gets better for you very, very soon.
  4. Sounds like it's good you wrote the letter!
  5. Good to know! I've never been there, but I'm in the area frequently, so I'll have to check it out.
  6. If you haven't already read this, make sure you do: Open Original Shared Link. It definitely makes gluten-free at Disneyland seem heavenly. I haven't gone since changing my diet, but I intend to go before the summer's over (I live pretty close). It sounds like calling ahead is the key to getting extra great service, so make sure you do. Have fun!
  7. You guys are all so much nicer than me. I probably would've changed the locks.
  8. That's simply unconscionable. I'm glad she didn't have any reactions, but that is so far from ok.
  9. I think it definitely doesn't hurt to check. Wouldn't it be great if you could find out the source of all your trouble? I think it's awesome that your doctor even thought to double-check for Celiacs, by the way. That seems to be pretty rare.
  10. Oh! And I've been sleeping through the night! I haven't done that in ages!!
  11. I thought I'd update since I've been just about a month gluten-free now. The difference is pretty drastic. First off, my scalp isn't itchy and scabby anymore at all. Who knew? Also, digestive troubles are a thing of the past but for two recent accidental glutenings (the reactions to which were so severe that I'm pretty sure I made the right decision)...
  12. Like the person above said, you're more likely to get something through the 504 plan. In fact, in the textbook I'm reading for my class on teaching students with special needs, it lists "severe allergies" as one of the specific things Section 504 will pick up because IDEA does not cover it (unless it somehow affects how the student learns, of course). Next...
  13. I think when quitting anything it's easier to go cold turkey. Otherwise you can keep telling yourself "this is the last one!" indefinitely. Because this is a health issue, it's all the more important to quit right away.
  14. I read "bogeyman" as a loaded term, probably because of my associations with it. When I think of the word, I imagine a kid being afraid of something in his closet that isn't actually there. To me, the use of the term implies that the danger of gluten isn't actually there. Maybe I'm being hypersensitive.
  15. The fairs around here I've been to always have a baked potato and/or corn-on-the-cob booth. They may not be the most satisfying things, but they're tasty and can get you by, at least. Depending on which amusement park you're planning on going to, you might be pleasantly surprised with the options. It definitely doesn't hurt to call ahead. Of course...
  16. I had a problem with that part of the article, too. I am in no way eating fewer carbs. As a vegetarian, a lot of my protein sources were MADE of wheat gluten, so now I'm eating way MORE carbs. Then why do I feel fine after eating gluten-free cake? That's far from healthy. Also, I have gorged myself with gluten-free food -- it's a totally different...
  17. Add me to the list of folks not reacting well to Cinnamon Chex (and, yes, I double and triple checked that it's the gluten-free one). I've been feeling glutened for three days now (when I started eating it), and I chalked it up to having gone out to eat a few days ago and there being CC. This morning, though, I threw up immediately after eating the Cinnamon...
  18. Hopefully all the parks you want to visit are still open when you get here -- the CA budget just got signed and the parks got hit pretty hard. They are definitely worth visiting, though -- we've got some beautiful places here. Will you have internet access as you travel or where you stay? If so, things will be much, much easier. When you get to...
  19. It's going to be hard going back to Spain and not having any churros... I've been dreaming about them for years at this point. But now that I've experienced being glutened, I think I'll be able to resist. Last time I was there, I stayed in an apartment... I guess I'll have to come up with a similar living situation so I can make all my own food. It was...
  20. Brilliant, Johnny Fiberbutt. My favorite part was this: OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! DO I REALLY HAVE TO THROW OUT ALL MY POTS, PANS, COOKING UTENSILS, DISHES, FLATWARE AND MY TOASTER?! Yes, but not because of gluten concerns. Your kitchen equipment has been plotting against you for years.
  21. Like others have said, you don't have any rights in this instance, but you do have a voice. This company has heard your needs. Maybe in the future they will here from other people with Celiacs or allergies. Then they may decide it would be a good business decision to charge a bit extra for a special plate for such people. Maybe you won't make a difference...
  22. My understanding is that "no gluten ingredients" means there might be cross-contamination while "gluten-free" implies it is made on a dedicated line. I do not buy items that say "no gluten ingredients" at this point. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know.
  23. I've been gluten-free for about a month now, and I had my first gluten accident last Friday. It was awful for about 4 hours, and then it was moderate for a day, and now I'm back to what I only recently realized is normal. Since that is the worst I've ever felt, I definitely buy into the theory that the longer you go without gluten, the worse the reaction...
  24. I teach older students, but I wanted to add that the advice you are getting is great! I get students with diabetes and allergies all the time, and I always appreciate getting notes from parents on the first day discussing those issues. In high school, teachers have a lot less to do with food, but it's still important to know these things. I second the...
