  1. I can only speak for my local Baja Fresh, but the managers and employees there have been very understanding and helpful. I get a veggie burrito "bare style" (no tortilla). The corn chips at my location are fried in oil they use only for corn chips (there are some breaded fried options, and my understanding is that at some locations they might use the same...
  2. In Living Gluten Free for Dummies there's a flour tortilla recipe that works great. I've subbed several different types of flours and flour mixes and have yet to make a bad batch. Maybe that would be something to look into.
  3. I e-mailed them as well. This makes me think back to when I was a Girl Scout. How awful would it be for a Girl Scout with Celiac to have to carry around all those boxes of cookies without ever being able to try one? That, and every meeting I remember, we had cookies or some other kind of gluten-y treat.
  4. My first month gluten free I had some crazy meat cravings. I even gave in once (and regretted it... managed to get in three or four gross bites). Now that I seem to have more of a handle on creating complete gluten-free & vegetarian meals, the cravings seem to be (mostly) gone. I've been getting most of my protein from nuts & beans lately, and I'm...
  5. I'm curious why you're so opposed to bringing your own food as well. If the restaurant you're going to is one you trust and will cater to you, that's one thing, but if you know you can't eat... why not bring your food? There are many people out there who are actually uncomfortable when they're eating and someone else isn't -- I've yet to meet anyone who's...
  6. Since it sounds like you regularly went there, have you built up a rapport with any of the employees? If so, maybe they'd be more likely to be extra careful with your food. I'm not familiar with the chain itself, but it doesn't sound anymore likely to have cc than, say, In-N-Out, which also only sells burgers and fries. My sister & I haven't had any...
  7. Awesome!
  8. I've been a vegetarian about 14 years. My husband eats meat, and I would say only fish smells bad to me. It all looks pretty bad, though, and I don't want to eat it. If the smell's turning you off, then maybe you should look into some gluten-free vegetarian cookbooks. There are a bunch out there, and then you wouldn't have to worry that you're just having...
  9. So far I've only called myself "gluten intolerant" because I clearly am. That said, I suspect Celiac because it runs in my family.
  10. I have fluorosis discoloration on my teeth, but maybe that was a misdiagnosis. I know my dentists have all seemed pretty surprised that someone growing up in America would have fluorosis at all. It'd be interesting to look into, but the damage is done, so there's no real rush.
  11. The only thing I can think of is a whole bunch of mashed potatoes. But more importantly... do you have a recipe for those pierogies? That's one of the dishes on my "I absolutely can't live without these" list that I haven't attacked yet.
  12. That's possible. My medical jargon is not well developed.
  13. My hesitation to agree there is that my grandmother was diagnosed in her mid-70s. Up until the hospitalization that got her diagnosed, she'd been healthy and active with what she described as a chronically upset stomach. Then she started losing weight (she'd already been thin her whole life) and was admitted to the hospital when they realized she was malnourished...
  14. I've been planning to make myself a pizookie with the Betty Crocker cookie mix... an ice-cream sandwich sounds good, too. Yum!
  15. Wow... what an awesome doctor! I'm hoping mine will react similarly... I keep putting off making the appointment.
  16. I found Korn's Gluten-Free Living for Dummies to be helpful and positive. It might be a good start.
  17. That's a great article!
  18. How frustrating! Will you be informing your son's teachers about it since they obviously won't be getting the information from the nurse?
  19. I liked the article -- the only word I can think of to describe it is calm. It doesn't make the diet sound impossible, nor does it try to get controversial, even though it mentions how care in the US is woefully behind care in other countries. Overall, it sounds doable despite the costs involved, and I like that it ended on a positive note.
  20. Awesome! Hopefully you've set a precedent so that other people with Celiacs or allergies will not have to go through all the trouble you did. I look forward to reading that article.
  21. I hope your sleep gets under control soon. I've always been an insomniac. A good night for me involved four hours of sleep. Five was miraculous. Usually I got one to three hours, and I ended up with some serious problems last year because I went several days in a row without so much as a minute of sleep. Sleeping pills just made me hallucinate. Fun. ...
  22. My kitchen is gluten-free right now and my husband is being really, really supportive. Sometimes he talks about how we could make it safe for him to have some gluten ingredients, but I know he's aware of cross-contamination, so if he decides to do that, he'll be careful. It's definitely good not having any gluten in here at all while I get used to this.
  23. I've had several friends quit after reading that same book. Apparently, it's a miracle worker -- you can read the reviews here: http://www.(Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned)/Easy-Way-Stop-Smokin...rBy=addFiveStar. Maybe your husband should read it, Roda. Good luck.
  24. There's some great advice in this thread! I hope it's helping. This is probably my favorite. My grandmother went out five days a week to each lunch with her parents and whatever kids and grandkids could show up. She mostly rotated among three restaurants. When she got diagnosed (after a depressingly long stay in the hospital where they tried to...
  25. When I heard they were going to cook for Zoey D (I'm not even going to try to spell her last name), I was super excited because I knew it was going to be vegan -- something I've wanted the show to do since the beginning. But then when it was gluten-free as well, I was ecstatic. The three chefs who had the highest scores made absolutely delicious looking meals...
