Hi Seamaiden,
A few weeks ago I went to the restockit web site to get the small packets of gluten-free soy sauce. I couldn't tell by the web site which were gluten-free and which weren't and I e-mailed them about it and never got an answer, can you tell me exactly what you ordered??

I'm hearing impaired and I have Celiac, I wasn't diagnosed until last year and my hearing loss is from childhood so I'm not sure they are related, but just wanted you to know.

I'm cruising in 3 weeks on the Windsurf, operated by Windstar Cruises (owned by Holland America) and we cruised with them before. When you notify them of your gluten-free status they tell you they will do their best and that they only have one kitchen, however everyone on the ship went out of their way for us. The Maitre de, the Chef and our waiter. I wasn't glutened once. At every meal the Maitre de came to me and told me what I could eat (I got to the buffets first before cross contamination happened) and they had a barbeque on deck for lunch every day where they would cook my food separately. Also at every meal you had the option of going in the dining room and whenever I did the chef would offer to make almost anything on the menu gluten-free for me, also he made me a lot of things that were NOT on the menu. (special desserts).
Windstar is a small cruise line with big sailing ships so they do not stock gluten-free foods for me, however I understand that on Holland America's larger ships they do supply gluten-free food as long as you tell them a month in advance of your food issues.
Because of the smaller ship its a very relaxing cruise and you go to lots of smaller ports and islands that the big ships can't stop at.

Well that's nice but I don't really have time to write, I'm sure you don't want to type the entire list of gluten free products but maybe you could list a few of them?

Hi new members! I'm from MA too, beautiful Cape Cod which is cold but sunny today!

I've read here a million times that the line is gluten free, however their answer to me lead me to believe the entire make up line is NOT gluten-free. They told me the mineral foundations were gluten-free but they told me I had to call them on all the other products I'm using from their line and they will tell me if they are gluten-free or not. I will say I didn't do that because I'm only using the mineral foundations however the fact that they told me to call tells me there might be gluten in some of the products.

Hi Eeyor fan (my daughter and I love eeyor!),
I'm not sure why you think no one is interested in your responses from various companies but I certainly am and I'm betting that a lot of others are too. I'd love to see the response you got from the Dove people, especially since I use Dove soap (and I'm really itchy lately).
I know that with some companies the replies seem to really vary, for example everyone here says that the make up Bare Essentuails is gluten free (and I do use it and love it) but their reply to me was a bit different... they told me I would have to call on each product, they did say their mineral foundations were gluten-free but as for the rest they told me to call with my list of products that I use. To me that clearly says that the entire line is NOT gluten free.
Anyhow... I'd love to see the response you got from Dove if you care to share it.

If you like I can go to my grocery store and get the brand names of balsamic vinegars that I don't trust Richard however they don't say gluten they say the have added color, some say carmel color. I'm not saying they contain gluten I'm just making the point that they are not just vinegar, they have other stuff added to make them dark due to the lack of aging (these most always are inexpensive brands).
I tend to think, not only for my gluten issues, but also just for general health, the fewer ingredients the better and in my book, vinegar should just be vinegar, not have added color and flavor.

A week ago I had both an endoscopy and colonoscopy. Immediately after the procedure I was told I had 6 small ulcers in my stomach and diverticulosis. I was told to take zantac (in the past zantac has given me more relief then prolosic or other belly drugs) and was given an Rx that is refillable many times.
Last night at 10 pm (I was sleeping on the couch) my doctor called me with results from the biopsies. I'm going to recall their office this morning to be sure I have all the info correct but I have the gist of it and I'm looking for comments, advice, etc.
She said I have gastroenteritis, which I guess means my insides are inflamed. I do not have h. plyori so that didn't cause the ulcers. She said the lining of my stomach and intestine is filled with cells associated with allergies (not sure what those are... would that be like Ige antibodies?) and this in itself is unusual. She said that also the fact that Zantac seems to work better for me instead of prilosic which is considered the stronger medicine is interesting because Zantac is slightly different then the other drugs in that it blocks histamine which of course is associated with allergy.
So... first we are going to run some basic blood work, yet again, cbc, blah blah. Then I guess some tests for parasites, etc. Then she is talking about having food allergy tests done.
I don't know much about food allergies, my daughter is severely allergic to peanuts/nuts. But I know there are different sort of tests... skin prick, rast, which is best? Has anyone paid for the York allergy tests you can order on your own? How reliable are they?
Anyhow that's the scoop so far... I know a lot of you all deal with multiple food allergies but for me this is a first and I'm a bit depressed by the thought that I will have more stuff I can't eat....
Susan
PS - she also said my biopsy for celiac was perfect, no damage so at least I'm doing pretty well with gluten-free.

Thanks for the heads up, my daughter has a life threatening peanut and tree nut allergy and she reacts to peanuts airborn as well. I'll go read the article asap.

Oh I don't think you should say that balsamic vinegar is always gluten free. I've read that some inexpensive ones are not aged very long so they don't get the nice dark color that they should have from aging so they add coloring to it to make it appear aged. And who knows if the coloring is gluten-free.
When I buy it at the store I buy one of the more expensive brands that has been aged for years and who's ingredients specifically only says: vinegar.

I agree with the homemade cranberry sauce thing... I make it so its not that clear jelly thing, its got visable pieces of cranberry in it. I add a little orange zest and orange juice and every year people rave about it. The best thing about it is that you shouldn't make it on the "hectic" day. Its best if made a day or two before hand.

After 13 years of symptoms I'm just really glad to finally feel better. I'm a positive person 99% of the time. I think its easier for me because I'm the "head of the household" here so I don't have to deal with perhaps an unsupportive partner. I really feel badly for those of you that have to do that. I don't blame anyone for a little whining, I tend to think most of us do that now and then and if not here, where everyone understands the issues, where?
So of us make changes more easily then others, for me going gluten-free was fairly easy and because I felt better almost immediately it was a positive experience. Not everyone is so lucky. I don't expect anyone's experience to be exactly like mine and if I can do anything to make it easier for someone I will. If they whine, so what.

I react quickly, in 20 minutes or so and if I got a big does of gluten it lasts for a long time... a good 2 weeks.

That's enough. Your all set, my sample was not much more then that and they didn't seem to have a problem with it.

I'm having both done on Wednesday and I'm just looking over the directions right now and it says I can have jello (lemon, lime or orange, why not other flavors....). So is jello gluten free? Also I can have beef or chicken broth... is Imagine brand gluten-free?
Thanks for your help....

I agree my ex is acting like a jerk, umm that's really why he is my ex. I could probably go to court and stop his visitation but my daughter is 14 and she wants to spend time with her dad so she'd hate me (and so would he) if I did that. I believe so strongly that she needs her father that I've had a 4 year long distance relationship with my boyfriend (we fly back and forth every other week) just so I don't yank her away. I believe at 14 she can make this happen if she wants too and thats the issue..... getting a 14 year old to never eat gluten again is difficult especially when her symptoms are not bad.
I'm going to talk to the jerk but he's a hard sell.

I'm using Bare Escentuals now too however, I not only e-mailed them but called as well and they were VERY EVASIVE as to if the line is gluten-free, as a matter of fact they told me they "thought" it was not and that I need to call about each individual product. So when I asked about a few I had handy they read me the ingredients and said, "there is no wheat in that, right?" I have to tell you I was not impressed.
I am using the stuff since everyone here keeps saying its gluten-free but honestly I don't believe it until the company gets there act together a bit more. My experience was similar to Estee Lauder products, non-commital.
I really wish these make up and health and beauty aids companies would just put together simple lists, like Neutrogena has, so they can make it easy for us. How hard can that be, they make the products, you'd think a list of what is gluten-free and what has nut oils in them would be very simple.

Have him read some medical stuff on the internet if he isn't buying the cross contamination issue, there is a lot of info out there. I'd think that he'd want you to feel good, that will make life easier for both of you.
I have to say that I'm single and when I read this sort of thing it makes me so happy to be so (yes I'm jaded). We are beginning to think my daughter has to be gluten-free, (getting her tested in a few weeks) and my ex husband will not be on board for this, he has already said they (he and his fiance) will "try" to keep her gluten-free but with 3 other kids and 2 adults in their house who are not gluten-free it probably won't work. He is taking the attitude that she is with me more then him so it will be "mostly" fine.
Our house is almost totally gluten-free, most of my cooking is now gluten-free and it works for us. At this point my daughter does still eat some gluten (cookies and stuff) but she "gets" it and is very careful, cleans up, eats the junk in her room, etc.
good luck, Susan

I travel a lot, at least 3 times a month (for a few days at a time) so I'm constantly having to deal with the restaurant issue. However a diner would probably be my last choice of places to eat, in my experience virtually everything is contaminated. I tend to think breakfast is hard, I know people here have eaten at denny's but I've not had great luck with breakfast. I do poached eggs now and then and fruit salad. But thats about it.
I have pretty good luck at chain places that have gluten-free menu's and I do really well at upscale restaurants with a chef.
