ARCHIVED Talk Me Down - Dr. Mentioned Refractory And Lymphocytes
T.H. replied to julandjo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's wonderful! Man, it's great when you find the answer! When I was on an elimination diet, the rules I was supposed to follow if I wanted to be really, really careful were to try a new food in a small amount (a few mouthfuls) and wait for 2 days to see if you react. If that's good, then try a larger amount - like a cup or two, and wait for two days... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cosmetics?
T.H. replied to Jess-Ay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you don't get a skin rash from it, I tend to think of it this way: If this product is on anything that might enter my mouth, or there's a high chance that use of it might get a bit in your mouth, make it gluten free. So licking food off your fingers, chewing your nails, touching any food with your hands: get gluten free lotions, nail polish (I think... -
Anyone know how the participants for most Celiac Disease studies are chosen? I'm assuming they are volunteers, but I honestly don't know. However, a fellow celiac's comment on a yahoo group re: a study got me thinking. She has fairly nasty reactions to gluten and mentioned that she would never volunteer for a study that required her to eat gluten. So...

I don't know if this would be your difficulty, but my own experience was that after I was gluten free for a while, I started reacting to less gluten than I had before, best I can tell. My daughter had this as well. I have also heard of folks having worse reactions to gluten after they'd been gluten free a while - my father and brother had that, with no increase...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Food Too Expensive... Tips For Feeding Family?
T.H. replied to GFMomma711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We're in the same boat as Domesticactivist. We had to simply change our menu completely. So we have meals that are much higher in veggie content, with small bits of meat mixed in, and whole grains periodically. Fruits are our dessert treat, especially when we dry them now, or cook them and add to whole grains. -
For the most part, yeah. But I was really surprised about how LITTLE meat had to be in a food for it to be under the USDA auspices ( "...mixed food products that generally contain more than 3 percent raw meat or 2 percent or more cooked meat or poultry meat.") That could involve a lot of items in the freezer section, for example, that I would have automatically...

Here's hoping that you can find your answers soon! I'm afraid I'm not familiar with stomach cramping on an empty stomach, though. Might it have anything to do with the yeast/protozoa? I know that if they don't get enough food (yeast), when it dies off, you can have a physical effect. I don't know if that involves cramping, however. Might be worth checking...

ARCHIVED Dictating What Others Can Eat Around Me?
T.H. replied to Cypressmyst's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So more what you're arguing is that if it was just odor, nothing else whatsoever, then proteins can't come into contact with the mucus membranes and cause a gluten reaction, yes? For that aspect of it, I'd say, yeah, you're probably right. I know researchers have never detected proteins in odors (okay, so maybe I couldn't remember and had to go and look it... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until You Start Feeling Better?
T.H. replied to Annabee93's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The constant hunger is something that some of us get, gluten free. I've heard lots of theories for it. One, you're healing and your body needs a lot of nutrients to do this. Another theory I've heard is that you're finally healing, and starting to digest, and your body is desperately trying to get the nutrients it hasn't had for a long time. And your hunger... -

in the music lessons area, you can make offers for lessons in the homeschooling community, too - many homeschoolers have more flexible hours than kids in school, so if your 'good' hours are during school hours, they can still take lessons. They also tend to pass the word around, so you'll have to do less advertising. You can do small groups that way, too... -
ARCHIVED Am I Being Glutened Or Could It Be Something Else?
T.H. replied to HS7474's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd second the possibility of your gluten free foods having too much gluten for you - gluten free just means it has levels that fall somewhere below 20ppm of gluten, usually. That's too much for some people. Or if you eat a lot of them, they can add up to too much for your daily intake. Also, some people have trouble with fructose malabsorption - long... -
ARCHIVED Dictating What Others Can Eat Around Me?
T.H. replied to Cypressmyst's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Actually, preliminary studies suggest that celiacs DO have a reaction to gluten contact of mucus membranes, at least orally. There need to be more studies to figure out what exactly happens, and if this would involve the nasal cavity and eyes as well, but the results themselves showed a definite auto-immune reaction in celiacs that didn't require gluten contact... -
I was NOT aware of this at all. Sigh. Open Original Shared Link The basics of the article are this: 1) Foods regulated by FSIS (under the USDA) have different regulatory rules re: allergens. 2) Under these rules, 'starch' can be derived from either corn or wheat, although in the US, it is usually derived from corn (but not always - and this is per...

ARCHIVED Anyone Have This Problem?
T.H. replied to staciesangels5's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you ever looked at Dermatitis Herpetiformis? It's a rash that some people with celiac disease can get. I believe it can be diagnosed with a swab of the rash? It discusses it here: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Talk Me Down - Dr. Mentioned Refractory And Lymphocytes
T.H. replied to julandjo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What are your reactions to the foods that are making you sick? My diet was extremely limited very quickly after going on the gluten free diet, as well. Mine was buffalo meat, carrots, organic avocado, sweet potatoes, quinoa, and amaranth, by the end. Everything else made me sick, and every time I tried to find new food, it never seemed to work. But... -
Oh, I so agree. If not for this forum and talking to other celiacs, I would have thought that my first GI knew what he was doing (which would have been oh-so-wrong). I hunted down a new one, and I honestly think it made a huge difference in my health finally improving!

Hair falling out can be for multiple reasons. The two I know of would be, yeah, vitamin deficiency. Hypothyroidism would be another, which can go along with celiac disease (You didn't say whether that was one of your issues?) Might want to get your thyroid checked. Also, if you are a celiac, far as I know, many of us have a leaky gut until we are healed...

ARCHIVED Rectal Administration Of Vitamines?
T.H. replied to Seraphim-Gabe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think you'll absorb much of your vitamins rectally, unfortunately. And on top of that, some studies done on celiac patients where they did rectal swabs with gluten ended up with the celiac patients having an auto-immune reaction. Not damage to the intestine, but the body did start 'ministering its defenses' as it were. Some of the vitamins you... -
ARCHIVED Questions For Those That Have Done An Elimination Diet
T.H. replied to cahill's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
on top of the amine issue, you can be allergic to just egg whites or just egg yolks, yeah. -
Solely in regards to whether you should work out after you've had a reaction, I would say: see how you do. I have had to learn the hard way that if I work out within a few days of getting glutened, especially anything aimed building muscles, I injure myself much more frequently. I don't know if it's coordination related (I have some balance issues when...

ARCHIVED Celiacs In Bay Area, California?
T.H. replied to GFMochi's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If you go to my profile, you can email me. I don't live in the Bay Area, but I visit there at least once every 1-2 months now. :-) I have had trouble finding a gluten free group there, too. -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard For You To Believe When People React To Different Gluten Levels Than You?
T.H. posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So, just what it says: if someone claims to react to VERY different gluten levels than you do, is it hard to believe them? And I mean this for someone either claiming to react to much less gluten, or much more gluten. In conversation, I've heard both reactions. - That there is NO WAY someone could react to such a tiny amount of gluten as X. - And... -
Actually, it's not uncommon to have yeast added. Yeast and bacteria are both required for fermentation, and while slow vinegar production can often use the natural yeast and bacteria present in the environment, a higher/faster yield often requires the addition of yeast and/or bacteria (or so I've been reading). As to it not being listed - I asked about...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Can Anyone Offer Guidance?
T.H. replied to StephHappens's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If I were you, I'd see a new doctor and THEN see a nutritionist. My first gastro did the test, said 'you have celiac disease. you have to go gluten free. Here's a nutritionist you can see.' and that was that. I went on-line, found out how much can be problematic in newly diagnosed adult celiacs, and I went and hunted down a better gastro (I checked... -
ARCHIVED Dh Is Ill And His Family Is Blaming My Gluten-Free Diet
T.H. replied to msmini14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh jeesh - aaarrggh! That's so frustrating. That 'this is different so it MUST be bad' attitude. As though everyone, everywhere in the world must eat the same way? We're omnivores for a reason. We developed as a species eating things when they were IN SEASON and LOCAL. Curiously, wheat doesn't tend to be in season everywhere, at every time. Like in most of...
